If you have a wind chime do you consider your neighbours?

It's windy today.
I can hear my neighbour's wind chime. It's not a mellow wooden one, or a light twinkly one, rather it sound tinny and tuneless.

I wonder whether people with wind chimes consider whether their neighbours want to hear the noise?

If the wind picks up maybe it will blow down and break.

Isn't that the point of a wind chime?

My husband masking taped our neighbour’s ones together one night 30 years ago-they were hung on their front porch opposite our bedroom window jangling day and night. They disappeared and weren’t replaced.

I have mine hung on a curtain rail inside the house, so when the patio door is open they tinkle rather than chime. I love the sound, they are not intrusive to any neighbours.

I love them but I know lots of people hate them so I don't have any.

My ideal would be for the neighbours to have some so I can hear them but not feel guilty

An update:
I plucked up the courage to speak to the woman. I was anxious that she might just say 'nah.....I like it, your problem', but she didn't.
She's had them for years, but recent tree work has meant the wind has freer access to the darn thing.
Honestly, the things have been driving me to distraction.

They are straight from hell. I hate them with a passion. Years ago our neighbour put some up. I told them in general conversation that I found them really irritating ( I didn’t directly ask them to take them down). Luckily they removed them… thank god! It beggars belief that people think it’s ok to have that constant noise - it’s as bad as yapping dogs!

Knocked on the door - please can you take your wind chimes down, I find the noise annoying and they are stopping me enjoying my garden.

Ha ha I have one that my neighbour gave me as a gift. She has a really nice one and when I told her that I liked hearing it, she got me one too. But we live in a VERY rural area so we are the only people that hear hers and she ours so we're all good!

I have two (they were given to me as presents, would never have bought one) I make sure they are wedged in the rose bush so they dont make a noise and I put them away in winter

They are indeed the devil’s own work. There’s no way I could live in a hippy commune if they had these chimes around. Would send me insane.

Aren’t they not allowed in built up areas? I’d have to train my cat to catch it, or some of the neighbourhood foxes.

Ah okay, I get it now. So it's either deaf people putting them out or people who do not understand how sound travels. And possibly people fortunate to have huge space between neighbours.

Sound outdoors travels FAR inside everyone's houses. Your immediate neighbours (semi / terraced) can hear everything outside.

I found this thread because there is someone near me who put one up and it's insane. Slightest wind and they make noise - hence the name!! Doesn't matter 'how' windy it is - take them down! So now I will never again experience silence in my front rooms. Oh well. I just blast the TV or music when in those rooms to drown out the noise.

Wind chimes need to be illegal outdoors. Just a pure noise disturbance.

Yep. Hot but breezy weather and I have been tortured all week with the constant fucking tinkly tuneless noise. I need my window open so I have had to have earbuds in for my sanity but I'm sure it's not good to wear them as much as I do. 😕

I think they've moved it nearer to me now too. I loathe my neighbours. They're so selfish in many ways but removing that abomination would go some way to quell my murderous feelings.

Newish neighbours have just installed some. I'm delighted. I love the sound but don't want to be responsible for them because I know so many people hate them so neighbours getting them is a win win for me.

I stand by my point that you can’t have any real problems if you’re this worked up.

Do you just sit quietly in your front room all day listening out for noises to complain about?

Cars, birds helicopters, aeroplanes, people walking by, the neighbours having a barbecue, your own speakers all make noise, should they be banned too?

In fairness, they’re horrible things - tacky, tuneless, and serve no purpose other than to annoy other people.

My elderly neighbours love them, they just make a tinkly sound. I honestly can’t see where all the fuss is coming from.

I wouldn’t personally want a garden full of them but from this thread you’d think it was a foghorn.

We have one in a remembrance area of our garden for my late dad. If its windy I tie it in. In reality, I put a tie round it October to April.

I.live by the noisiest most inconsiderate people ever. They own 2 houses, one an HMO with real Asb issues right by me. Noisy building works starting at 6am, out of control fires, noisy business without permissions, loud music.

It was me who got a letter from the council about the chime. It was a closed case because of no evidence from a diary and them having a windchime themselves.

Its clearly a matter councils will act upon though. Oh and a complaint about an old tree in my garden apparently scared their dd, age around 18. Not overhanging just a bit Sleepy Hollow.

Because it is constant and intrusive. It's not a nice sound that I have to hear. I can't sit in my garden and not hear it. I can't open my bedroom window and not hear it. I can't be in my living room on a warm day with the door open and not hear it.

A foghorn would be preferable. Loud but it's over and not on endless repeat!

I have tinnitus among other illnesses, and the sound really aggravates it.

If it was sometimes that's ok. But they know it bothers me and yet said they're deaf and can't hear it. It's also nearer my house than theirs. They're twats.

My old neighbours had an awful one in their back garden that went clonkety-clonk-clonk in a particularly tuneless way at any breath of wind. We had to keep all the back windows shut at night because of the noise. I was so glad to move house. My brother suggested getting a much larger and louder set of wind chimes to drown the neighbours’ out but we never went that far.

Honestly, I really think windchime haters should watch the scene in 'Bodyheat' where the seductress invites a stranger home to see her windchimes.
