If you have a wind chime do you consider your neighbours?

It's windy today.
I can hear my neighbour's wind chime. It's not a mellow wooden one, or a light twinkly one, rather it sound tinny and tuneless.

I wonder whether people with wind chimes consider whether their neighbours want to hear the noise?

If the wind picks up maybe it will blow down and break.

No they sound lovely. If neighbours complained and then agreed to stop their son screaming 24/7 at his computer I would possibly take them down

Solitario · 12/03/2026 22:25

We don't have any and thankfully neither do our neighbours, although they would be preferable to one side's seemingly never-ending DIY, garden and building work.

I regularly walk past a row of little terraced cottages. One cottage have hung a large set of windchimes up on the front of their house in very close proximity to the neighbour's windows and door. That would drive me bonkers and a mysterious accident would soon befall them.

If you get new neighbours who have a few noisy dogs and screaming children, you'll miss those wind chimes! I've never understood the MN obsession with wind chimes yet screaming children are considered to be acceptable!

My thoughts exactly.

better to have a lawn mower than an overgrown garden!
I assume you're a wind chime owner?

Used to have, not sure where they are now but I'll certainly seek them out at the weekend!

Ha ha! When the lack of apostrophe makes it much funnier!

I too had visions of a blood bath over the wind chimes, an apostrophe is a little thing but can create a good deal of humour!

Forthesteps · 12/03/2026 23:01

My neighbour is fine with it.

CoralOP · 12/03/2026 23:04

I remember my mum leaned over the garden fence and cut out neibours down with a pair of shears 🤭

lifeisgoodrightnow · 12/03/2026 23:04

Hanging offence - hoisted by their own wind chimes

Light pollution drives me insane.

I agree with this. We live in a rural village in a National Park. In recent years so many powerful lights on sensors, lights left on all night and even flashing lights have appeared. They are disturbing and intrusive, spoil the night sky and really confuse wildlife. A monstrosity of a very large house was recently built and, instead of the beautiful dark sky, half the village gets a view of their outside lights and huge lit up windows as they never seem to close curtains and blinds. It's very inconsiderate and 'look at us'.

But at least they don't have windchimes...

MelancholyEnchantment · 12/03/2026 23:20

I bought one when we first moved into our house. It was our first garden and I thought the tinkling bells would be relaxing and really lovely for the kids. The bastard thing lasted 30 minutes. Drove me mad and I hated myself on behalf of my neighbours whilst I took it down.

Solitario · 12/03/2026 23:24

Windcrimes.

stickydough · 12/03/2026 23:38

I like them but would never put one in my garden, because I’m not a dick!!!

JustGotToKeepOnKeepingOn · 12/03/2026 23:48

A friend of mine had one. After a particularly windy night she found it cut down and placed on her deck. Serves her right for being so inconsiderate. Lol.

Akitamum · 12/03/2026 23:48

I really wanted a wind chime but once I hung it up I felt too guilty for my neighbours. It is always windy here (or seems like it 😂) so I straight away hushed it by tying it closed with a hair bobble. I think I might release it on a nice summer day with a light breeze and only for a little while!

BringBackCatsEyes · 13/03/2026 08:49

Reporting all quiet here today again.
Bloody thing.

It’s not either/or. Bright lights are shit. Wind chimes are also shit. Both are shit.

Did you ask her to oil it?

No I didn't, it's her garden and she is entitled to have a squeaky swing without my interference.
I moved to another area of the garden....sometimes it's easier to change your own behaviour rather than confront others.

LadyVioletBridgerton · 13/03/2026 12:26

To me, they’re one of the most pointless things ever.

lazyarse123 · 13/03/2026 12:44

I had a couple and hadn't realised quite how annoying they were. They lived in the shed until we moved. Our ndn was very noisy, barking dogs literally from when she went out until she came home. I told her as nicely as i could because the dog sounded so distressed, he barely stopped for breath.
So because I upset her she started banging doors and making as much noise as she could even a council letter didn't stop her so when we moved i hung the chimes back up in the garden behind a locked gate. Hope she enjoyed them. We didn't have any other close neighbours.

My neighbours in a 2 up, 2 down in a built up city area got a cockerel as a pet…… that really tested my sanity…….

Why a cockerel as a pet?! Surely it wouldn’t be happy there.

NovemberMorn · 13/03/2026 12:49

I think I was first drawn to windchimes after seeing the film Body Heat.
Even though it was back in the 80's...I am still waiting for my Katherine Turner William Hurt moment.

I have a gorgeous wooden one that lets out the most lovely soft noise. HOWEVER I live in an ex pat gated community and my immediate neighbours are all expats.. the one side of us is nothing but mango trees..the other side is the identical house to ours..between both ours and next door neighbour..behind is three small 2 bed bungalows. The bungalows are all friends and come 2x a year..once for 2 weeks and once for one week and always seem to arrive within a day of each other.. the house beside us is an american couple that come 4x a year...for 4 days each time . During the time that the homes are occupied I take my wind chimes down. Its just good manners. If I ever have one of my neighbours sell to people that will live here full time.. well bye bye to my wind chimes (unless they are arseholes who blast music or scream all day)

LOL ffs.. I wrote this yesterday and jinxed myself.. our handyman (also our next door neighbours handyman) showed up early this morning..started filling the pool.. and took the cover of their car.. took the car to fill up and came back and washed the car. So bye bye my lovely wind chimes for at least 4 days.. lol. Thats ok.. they are lovely people and even though they party hard , have an outdoor kitchen as well as a big speaker and UGGGH a karaoke machine.. they generally have loud fun only the first couple evenings.. and they turn everything off by 9 or 930 pm. Really cannot complain about them.

but do you think everyone will agree with that?

Does everyone have to agree with everything though?

Other noises: dogs, kids, engines, birds, chitchat, music…

My friend was getting annoyed with a gobby frog the other day, when she was trying to concentrate on work!

I don’t have windchimes btw.

Of course not. We don't all like or enjoy the same things and we all have different levels of tolerance.

However, there are social expectations, general courtesy and consideration for others.

You said it was a nice noise and I asked whether you thought everyone thought the same. If you are making noise in your garden, I think we should all take a moment to consider whether our neighbours want to hear it.

I think most people are accepting of birds (pet cockerels aside), children playing, lawn mowing. Incessant dog barking, DIY outside of the hours prescribed by the council, music - less so.

Why do you have one?

I find the sound calming. I'm aware that many people don't like them so I don't put them out if it's windy.
