I often hear that this was the norm. But was it, really?

Well I’m sure there were some who didn’t , but I didn’t know any. Yes thrashed fairly regularly .

gamerchick · 09/03/2026 20:32

Was in my world.

I remember my brother hiding because they were looking for him with the belt.

They didn't find him though.

itsthetea · 09/03/2026 20:32

Slapped rather than thrashed

tutugogo · 09/03/2026 20:33

Smacked yes, most were

ExtraOnions · 09/03/2026 20:34

Not just parents .. teachers, police officers, and anyone you would cheeky with might give you a clip. When I was a Primary school in the 70s, the Head used to hit kids with a slipper.

Bigearringsbigsmile · 09/03/2026 20:34

I was smacked- definitely not thrashed or beaten but smacked with the palm of the hand on the legs

Laiste · 09/03/2026 20:34

Legs slapped here.

I remember my mother hitting me round the head when i broke something by accident.

CleanSkin · 09/03/2026 20:34

Occasionally, but not often. It wasn’t unheard of, but it was definitely a major punishment.

Theonlyfatmiddleagedwomannotonmonjaro · 09/03/2026 20:34

I was. Incase usual and normal for misbehaving.
I recall being at sevrfriends houses and being threatened with a smack for being "naughtu" was asnusualnthere as in my home.
I dont feel I was abused or singled out. I dont feel anything about it tbh. Thats just how it was. Clear boundaries. Clear ramifications for not behaving.

Bigearringsbigsmile · 09/03/2026 20:35

It was definitely normal

MissyB1 · 09/03/2026 20:35

Yes it was fairly common, definitely happened in our house. Physical punishment at school was common too, even in primary school we were smacked and caned.

NFPorterkeeponkeepingonNsoul · 09/03/2026 20:35

Dv was common, block of eight flats ,three were battered wives(horrible terminolgy)
My mum and myself included I was a child at the time and got caught in the crossfire

wonderstuff · 09/03/2026 20:35

I was born in 79, physical punishment very common throughout the 1980s. My parents hit me very rarely, but the threat was there if I pushed it. I imagine corporal punishment in state schools was only outlawed in the 70s? I remember it being made illegal in private schools being on newsround, so that was likely late 80s/early 90s.

Tide started to turn in 90s I think.

gregoryhousesaysitsnotlupus · 09/03/2026 20:35

Our parents never hit me or my siblings growing up in the 70s. Likewise, we have never hit our children. I am sure it was much more common then, though.

They also didn't leave us sitting in the car with a packet of crisps whilst they were in the pub like some parents seemed to do.

Davros · 09/03/2026 20:36

No. I was never smacked or hit. I was born in 1960

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 09/03/2026 20:36

Most kids were smacked from time to time, I think.

I don’t think the majority of kids were beaten.

But it’s hard to think what possessed people from a modern day point of view.

TheFallenMadonna · 09/03/2026 20:36

My parents weren't big on smacking, but it was very normal, as was corporal punishment in schools.

Fourwinds · 09/03/2026 20:37

Definitely the norm.

I was smacked at home and regularly had a wooden clog thrown at me.

I remember boys standing outside the head master's office awaiting the cane. Always seemed to be the same boys so it didn't work as a deterrent. There were a few girls who were always in "trouble" but I don't remember them receiving corporal punishment.

gamerchick · 09/03/2026 20:37

I remember being slapped in nursery and all through Infant school. A part way through junior school. I remember the blackboard rubber being thrown at our heads.

Caining was abolished the year before we went to comp.

Craftysue · 09/03/2026 20:38

My mum and dad never hit me or my siblings. I do remember some teachers smacking occasionally though. Born in 1967

Ha ha. We weren’t left in a car outside the pub, but we were taken to the pub and we’d all sit outside (the pub had outdoor seating - we lived in a village - not posh but it did have seats basically in the car park 😂)

My Dad would go in for the drinks and it was made clear that in no circumstances could children go inside!

Wonderknicks · 09/03/2026 20:38

I was smacked a handful of times I think. At primary school the girls got the slipper & the boys tte cane. My teacher in year 4 had the ebony ruler that she used to rap you across the knuckles with if you weren't paying attention.

Wallywobbles · 09/03/2026 20:38

Got spanked twice I remember.

Our head teacher hit a boy on the head with a guitar in assembly and this was just considered fine. This was in the 80s so I think probably not actually allowed!

HarrietSchulenberg · 09/03/2026 20:39

No, not really. I was born in 1970 and smacking wasn't really in my parents' toolkit.
