I often hear that this was the norm. But was it, really?

OP posts:

Is there a reason you're asking OP, or are you just after some resources?

Isabelle70 · 09/03/2026 20:40

Yes, I would have a slap on the back of the legs, normally as I was legging it up the stairs as I was getting sent to bed.
Apart from that I had a great childhood, out to play on my pushbike, quick home for tea and then out to play again without a care in the world.

My parents never did, although they were very young so possibly part of the 'new wave' Teachers would give you a wrap on the knuckles, and I remember a board rubber being flung across the room at a boy by one particularly irate man - that was into the 80's too.

bakebeans · 09/03/2026 20:40

My dad did once’s. My mum never. I remember a slap on the hand in primary school from the headmaster with a ruler and a teacher throwing a blackboard easel across the room at a pupil

QuirkyHorse · 09/03/2026 20:41

I was a 70's child.
My mother was very handy. Her weapon of choice was a wooden spoon, horse whip, a cane and if she didn't have anything close to grab, she would merrily use her hand.
Her behaviour towards us was dreadful.

TheNameWasOnceChosen · 09/03/2026 20:42

No, never hit or smacked. I do remember my mum slapping my legs once and I laughed at her. I was about 7.

notnowbernadette · 09/03/2026 20:42

Smacking happened at home and the headteacher at school had a slipper. I remember one pupil being routinely stood on a chair and smacked yet I have no recollection of the behavior that led to this.

Our head teacher hit a boy on the head with a guitar in assembly and this was just considered fine. This was in the 80s so I think probably not actually allowed!

That's just reminded me.. I wasnt ever smacked by my parents growing up, but they didn't seem to bat an eyelid when the maths teacher used to throw the big wooden board rubber at our heads if he thought we weren't paying attention, or lock us in the stationery cupboard if we were late to class 🤔

BIossomtoes · 09/03/2026 20:42

I was never smacked (born 1953) nor was my son (born 1975).

Iloveeverycat · 09/03/2026 20:42

I wasn't smacked but the headmaster at primary school had a cane.

Tigerbalmshark · 09/03/2026 20:44

Almost everyone I knew at school got smacked by their parents (early 80s). The one or two families who didn’t smack were famous for it (they were also the lentil-eating tv-banning own-shoe-sewing hippies)

Goldmonkey · 09/03/2026 20:44

I don’t remember ever being smacked but it was threatened.

mondaytosunday · 09/03/2026 20:44

Don’t know anyone who hit their kids, though I guess who knows what goes on behind closed doors. But it wasn’t acceptable where I grew up. My parents never hit us that’s for sure (I was born in the 60s).

gamerchick · 09/03/2026 20:44

What about you OP?

Oh yes, the massive wooden blackboard rubber I remember that thrown a lot.

Boughy · 09/03/2026 20:45

Completely normal in my world. My parents saw smacking as a necessary part of effective parenting. They judged people who didn't smack because they couldn't control their children properly. I remember them talking with their friends about that ridiculous law in Sweden.

it was only ever smacking on the bum though.

It's quite fascinating how much my generation (70s/early 80s babies) have such a different attitude on this to our parents.

Summerbay23 · 09/03/2026 20:46

Yes, smacked. Physical punishment also very common at school (born early 70s).

catipuss · 09/03/2026 20:47

No we weren't hit even in the 1950's and my mum threatened to throw my grandad out for even threatening to. It's a myth that everyone did it, some did and others were horrified by it even years before the 70s.

HandfulOfMoths · 09/03/2026 20:47

Smacked with wooden spoons, hairbrushes, slippers and hands. My dad used a hand mirror once and it smashed.

moderndilemma · 09/03/2026 20:47

Child of the 60's. Yes, smacked at home, usually on the back of my thigh. Always by Mum, it was instant reprimand. There was never any "wait till your father gets home" threat (which would have felt worse for me - the smack was an instant sting, just one smack, and the whole thing was over). I was never beaten, nor was any implement ever used.

At primary and secondary school there was corporal punishment - a leather strap. But it was sparingly used and I was never a recipient.

Dymaxion · 09/03/2026 20:47

Yes but not very frequently, got smacked by friends parents and teachers too.

ThisSunnyBee · 09/03/2026 20:48

Yep. Terrifying

gamerchick · 09/03/2026 20:49

You know, we're giving fodder for some lazy buggers assignment don't you dudes?

Jk987 · 09/03/2026 20:49

I can’t get my head around the fact it’s not ok for adults to hit other adults but it’s ok to be violent to little kids.

VivaDixie · 09/03/2026 20:49

I was born early 70s and was smacked on the bum and legs - usually for looking the wrong way - horrendous really. I grew up in a village - I didn't know any of my friends who werent smacked

We had a teacher who used to go out to the pub every lunchtime, come back in the afternoon and slap the poor 'naughty' (in hindsight definitely ADHD) kid around the head (early 80s)
