To absolutely hate the word… snacks

When did the word snacks come in?! When I was a kid it wasn’t used. It gives me the ick… kids have a snack, give them snacks, snacks snacks snacks . Why not meals?! I could rant all day about the word snack and my hate for it . If you do give your kids food just call it fruit , crisps etc but snacks can jump off a cliffe

🤣love it and love snacks!
OP seriously what do you call crisps? Are they beneath you? Do you say could you pass a pack of nibbles please? Do you call them canapés?!

Last night we went to the theatre to see Prima Facie with Jodie Comer in- oh it was amazing. But, alas a group next to us were discussing what snacks they had bought to eat whilst watching the 90 minute play. Suffice to say they were rattling their crisps all the way through and their malteaster wrappers . I didn’t know people took snacks to the theatre. A mid interval ice cream… sure but snacks.

No I just lost the will to live and I’m bored as fuck … that’s as deep as it goes. I realised you can literally write anything on here and people read it and respond. It’s fascinating. I’ve been writing absolute twoddle at best.

also extremely proud to say I come across like that- hoorah Henry I say

its like a weird thing the internet. People read things and take it personally when it is AI or a bot responding and it’s not real and people can say whatever they like (within reason) . I always wonder what aliens would make of us

I hate meal. And tasty. And picky bits, nibbles, and dollop. Also simple, when it precedes salad or tomato sauce.

I love a dollop!

Can't be doing with a simple...

What about snackage. That's what it's called in this house.

Agree with the “picky bits”, ugh I hate even typing it out 😂

For me though a snack isn’t a meal, if I wanted a “snack” I’d probably have cheese and crackers or some crisps and a banana! So I’m not bothered by the word snack, interesting though I hate the term “bite to eat”, possibly because my dad has overused it for as long as I can remember, all meals/snacks and everything in between is classified as a “bite to eat”. We still have the same conversation any evening I speak to him:

“Have you had a bite to eat”
”No father, I’ve had my dinner”

😂

Meadowflower2023 · 18/02/2026 22:16

Snacky snacks in this house, be it charcuterie, fruit, crisps or something sweet. I say to my LO when we’re up the farm ‘let’s go get snacky snacks’ because at this point we likely don’t know which snacky snacks we want until we get inside.

We’re (at times) quite precious about what food we eat here but not so far up our own arses we get offended by what they’re called (especially by other people!)

Ughughughughugh · 18/02/2026 14:32

Omg yes don’t get me started on that! When m and s starting using it I lost all respect for them. I perceive it as chavvy ! We have nibbles of a buffet or charcuterie and cheese , canapés.

Saying you have ‘nibbles’ is way chavvier than picky bits.

I don’t mind the word snack but I do agree that people eat way too much.

I’d take some snacks to the cinema or watching a movie at home, but I wouldn’t take them to the theatre, circus, shopping, walk etc but many people seem to take snacks wherever they go.

Is he from the West Midlands by any chance?

The other day I heard "exercise snacks", which is even worse. Apparently it's the notion of taking the stairs, walking an extra bus stop, etc as opposed to doing a workout.

I love the term 'exercise snack'. To me it's a rebellion against the idea we need to drive to a gym in special clothes to workout with a trainer for 45 minutes. For many people it's no doable and it's also not the healthiest way to exercise. Moving frequently - walking upstairs, carrying shopping bags running for the bus is a much better plan whether you call it 'exercise snacks' incidental exercise or whatever.

Boppydoodah · 19/02/2026 04:39

Ooo I hate mid-interval ice cream, makes my skin crawl. Unsure why, maybe it's strangers being all slobbery around you in the dark that does it. Or gobbling them down quickly before you go back in. Blech.

Boppydoodah · 19/02/2026 04:42

As far as the word 'snack' goes, Marcel the Shell with Shoes On has by far the best use, gets me every time. (Background Instagram comments "Mark's a snack!" which is completely irrelevant to the story itself.)

We had morning & afternoon tea growing up, quite often fruit & a biscuit in the morning or veggie soup in winter after school. I think it was a way of making us sit down for 5 mins to drink water, and to help with the witching hour while dinner was under way.

Nibbles 'of' a buffet is far worse.

benten54 · 19/02/2026 05:11

I don’t remember ever being given or having a snack in the 70s and 89s when growing up. Breakfast lunch and dinner and the fruit bowl was open territory. Never a random sandwich or bag of crisps outside of defined mealtimes unless you kept them from your lunchbox.
An ice pop in summer is th most we got

You really just sound like a twat.

Muttley17 · 19/02/2026 07:18

I happily use the word snacks but always ask my kids if they want any “rubbish” from the shops meaning crisps, chocolates, biscuits etc

God, the word gobbling is absolutely hideous.

MrsPenelopeBridgerton · 19/02/2026 09:36

😂 Everyone can hate a word I guess. I’ve got no particular hatred over ‘snacks’ but I’m not overly keen on cunt.
