To absolutely hate the word… snacks

When did the word snacks come in?! When I was a kid it wasn’t used. It gives me the ick… kids have a snack, give them snacks, snacks snacks snacks . Why not meals?! I could rant all day about the word snack and my hate for it . If you do give your kids food just call it fruit , crisps etc but snacks can jump off a cliffe

Just had a snack after supper, one was a sweet treat and I might have some picky bits tomorrow for lunch.

I love it. It's the word I use when my puppy does a wee outside:
" Good girl! Shall we get you a snack / do you want a snack / here's your snack". She gets a little training treat. She's only 12 weeks old and she knows the word perfectly!

Oh look 😍😍😍 mic drop on this thread with that little fella

I find people getting the ‘ick’, shuddering and otherwise getting upset about perfectly normal words or how others use language (assuming it’s not actively offensive) to be performative, childish and ridiculous.

Take the incredible maturity you demonstrate by being able to go hours without eating, and apply that to letting people use whatever words they choose to describe food.

It’s not the actual word like I said , it’s the constant performative asking if they wants snacks . Watch a move have snacks. Snacks snacks bloody snacks 🤣

Thank you for notice my maturity- that’s appreciated

Obese children “staggering” around.

That’s on a par with “those selfish arseholes flocking to beaches” in summer 2020.

Fat people (including children) are always staggering, stuffing, waddling, gorging etc etc. Ironic people happy to use this awful, dehumanising language about actual children but get upset about the word ‘snack’.

That’s a change in focus from your OP which talked exclusively about your hatred for the word itself.

People shouldn’t be badgering anyone, including children, to eat. But it’s perfectly acceptable to call a snack a snack.

The term “ick” is infinitely worse.

Agree like who ever uses that? So retro

I don't mind the idea of eating between meals such as a piece of fruit after breakfast, elevenses, a biscuit with a cup of tea or having something to tide you over if it will be a while till dinner etc etc but I also dislike the word snack or snacks. Its too generic, it doesnt describe what you actually want or why. It can mean anything and therefore means nothing.

DefinitelyNotMaybe · 18/02/2026 20:37

@Ughughughughugh maybe you should have a little snack OP, then the Pimm's might not go to your head so quickly.

Not a favourite word but can’t say I hate it. Now snacking I do hate!

ImogenBrocklehurst · 18/02/2026 20:38

I hate meal. And tasty. And picky bits, nibbles, and dollop. Also simple, when it precedes salad or tomato sauce.

iamjustlurking · 18/02/2026 20:40

Love snacks and picky bits but a cuppa pushes me over the edge

1apenny2apenny · 18/02/2026 20:49

Snacks = fat
as@AutumnedCrowsaid earlier ‘snacks’ are the upf marketers dream. These days it bc seems to be snack or screen to keep children quiet. Catch-em before 7 and you’ve got em for life, a bit like religion.

BUT never mind big food is in co-hoots with big pharma as you can get fat from ya snacks you can get your jabs to loose all those snacks later on 😎

This is very articulate… yes I think this is my issue. Have some cheese, some charcuterie, an apple but snack - it’s the word of the devil himself

We call them Shnacky Shnacks, in the style of Sean Connery here, is that alright?

🤣love it and love snacks!
OP seriously what do you call crisps? Are they beneath you? Do you say could you pass a pack of nibbles please? Do you call them canapés?!
