AIBU To Feel Ripped off by a florist?

My partner had arranged to collect my Valentine’s Day flowers on Saturday morning, which he’d ordered and paid £80 for earlier that week for collection.

However, when he went to collect them, he couldn’t believe what he was presented with. He complained at the time that he didn’t believe the bouquet was worth anywhere near what he’d paid for, others in the store collecting flowers agreed with him but the florists dealing with the collection just gave him a snooty response and carried on serving other customers. He called me to explain, but I had assumed he’d been dramatic, however, when he presented me with them, I was equally shocked, I can’t have thought these would be more than £40 from a good florist or maybe £25 from M&S.

Looking to get some other opinions, would you be happy with these flowers for £80? Personally, I think he should have been offered a partial refund if he wasn’t happy, or that they could have added a little to the bouquet to fill it out a tad. But equally very happy to be told this is what flowers cost and we should adjust our expectations accordingly

YABU - this is good value for money
YANBU - they have had his pants down

He was ripped off. They’re not even worth half that.

Mingspingpongball · 16/02/2026 19:15

They are mostly dead or very dehydrated and there’s only about £20 of flowers there! He needs to complain somehow as that’s appalling for £80

AliTheMinx · 16/02/2026 19:15

What a joke! He was absolutely ripped off...such a poor show!

RudolphRNR · 16/02/2026 19:15

I wouldn’t have even left the shop with that! Hardly anything in there and they look half dead. He should complain again in writing to the owner of the florist.

Trallers · 16/02/2026 19:15

It doesn't even look good quality - it's both too small and shoddy looking. I'd post the pics in a review. They had an opportunity to listen to him and sort it at the time and behaved poorly.

MoiraPlunkett · 16/02/2026 19:16

They look really wilted in that picture - I'd be disappointed at any price with flowers in that stage of decay.

But even if they'd been fresh, that's £25 worth at most. Looks like zero effort on presentation and a meagre quantity of roses.

stollenisthebest · 16/02/2026 19:17

Is it 12 roses with foliage? Surely roses are always double price at Valentine's - so if it looks like £40-50 worth, then £80 isn't too surprising.

BreadInCaptivity · 16/02/2026 19:18

He was fleeced. They look half dead and it’s a bloody small bouquet for the price.

They had MUCH nicer ones for £20 in the local village Co-Op.

Georgiepud · 16/02/2026 19:18

That's awful. I should imagine that you're both very disappointed and angry.

Like someone here said, can you submit a review?

Doubletroubledoubled · 16/02/2026 19:18

YANBU

roses2 · 16/02/2026 19:20

Please submit a 1* google review with photos - this isn’t on. Your DH complained at the time and the florist wasn’t interested- that should go in the review also.

Whaleandsnail6 · 16/02/2026 19:22

Yanbu but I think he should have refused to leave the shop with them and tried to get his money back

I think you could have got a way nicer bunch from the supermarket for a lot less

Goldenboysmum · 16/02/2026 19:23

I take it he'd already paid so had no choice but to take them?

They're awful, like others have said, leave a honest review with photos if possible.

Sorry read your post again, and he'd already paid.

bridgetreilly · 16/02/2026 19:25

Prices are generally higher on Valentine’s Day, so if you’d said he’d paid £50, I wouldn’t have been surprised. As it is, the best thing he can do is online reviews.

Blankfluff · 16/02/2026 19:25

Thanks all for the opinions, it’s good to know that we’re not going mad. I’ll be going in to the village tomorrow so will try to speak with the owner if they’re available. If they don’t resolve anything I’ll certainly be posting a review and sourcing flowers elsewhere in future. Such a shame as we like to support local businesses, but we also don’t like to be fleeced! The flowers will likely be for the bin by tomorrow, they have already lost petals and look very sad.

£80 for some roses that look half dead and a bit of eucalyptus? Absolutely ripped off. This is why I never buy flowers from florists.

Dollymylove · 16/02/2026 19:46

Better quality at Sainsbury's for 25 quid

Left · 16/02/2026 19:50

I’s ask him for the receipt if you’re going in. Just in case he didn’t order a cheaper bunch and is trying to cover himself (I’m very cynical though).

RosesAndHellebores · 16/02/2026 19:53

The flowers are diabolical. They are dead. Not even worth a fiver. However, your DH's intentions and gesture were fab and he's a keeper. It's worth a bad review but not a fight. Do.post the picture if you can.

FWIW I banned DH from sending me expensive Valentines flowers about 35 years ago. Cards, chocolate hearts, tea in bed and I buy a fab bunch half price on the 15th!

Allseeingallknowing · 16/02/2026 19:54

They’re half dead! They deserve a bad review. I wouldn’t pay in advance. What a cheek. Her husband should demand his money back. M&S and Lidl are far better.

CalmTheFuckDownMargaret · 16/02/2026 19:56

The roses aren’t fresh - they are droopy. That sorry bunch and a bit of eucalyptus (which does last well) shouldn’t be more than a tenner with a sale sticker in a supermarket!

Happyjoe · 16/02/2026 19:57

About £4 worth in tesco, and they're half dead. He should get a full refund.

Allseeingallknowing · 16/02/2026 19:57

Would someone who voted YABU please explain why, as no way on this earth are those flowers acceptable!

Allseeingallknowing · 16/02/2026 19:58

That’s an insult to Tesco- their flowers are much fresher!
