AIBU To Feel Ripped off by a florist?

My partner had arranged to collect my Valentine’s Day flowers on Saturday morning, which he’d ordered and paid £80 for earlier that week for collection.

However, when he went to collect them, he couldn’t believe what he was presented with. He complained at the time that he didn’t believe the bouquet was worth anywhere near what he’d paid for, others in the store collecting flowers agreed with him but the florists dealing with the collection just gave him a snooty response and carried on serving other customers. He called me to explain, but I had assumed he’d been dramatic, however, when he presented me with them, I was equally shocked, I can’t have thought these would be more than £40 from a good florist or maybe £25 from M&S.

Looking to get some other opinions, would you be happy with these flowers for £80? Personally, I think he should have been offered a partial refund if he wasn’t happy, or that they could have added a little to the bouquet to fill it out a tad. But equally very happy to be told this is what flowers cost and we should adjust our expectations accordingly

YABU - this is good value for money
YANBU - they have had his pants down

why did he ask for white roses?

ThatCyanCat · 16/02/2026 20:02

No, those are terrible!

toomanydicksonthedancefloor1 · 16/02/2026 20:06

I would say at other times of the year they would be £35 from a florist so maybe £50 on V day. So yes I wouldn't be happy either at £80. BUT why on earth are YOU going to the shop to resolve this? Your DH should be the one doing it, you aren't his mum.

Parsleyforme · 16/02/2026 20:10

What did the florist actually say? I can’t imagine what they could think up as an excuse for why the roses look half dead and there are barely any of them. A bunch of tulips from Lidl would’ve looked better!

A very fair point, I’ll get him to go back.

I’s ask him for the receipt if you’re going in. Just in case he didn’t order a cheaper bunch and is trying to cover himself (I’m very cynical though).

Sadly not, I found the receipt in the car last week

Get him to take the flowers

Brewtiful · 16/02/2026 20:19

I would definitely be leaving an accurate review. Even with valentine's day inflation prices he was completely ripped off. Not to mention these flowers look half dead!

Namechange568899542 · 16/02/2026 20:37

Not worth £80. They look more like a supermarket bunch you’d find a yellow sticker on due to them being on their last legs.

I went into a local florist (London) on a whim on my way to a friends birthday meal a while back, said I’ve got £25 what can you make me? And I got the most beautiful bunch about 3x the size!

Pippa12 · 16/02/2026 20:48

Had he paid for the flowers upfront? I can’t fathom why he’s left the shop with this wilted bunch of flowers. Until you said you’d found the receipt I thought he was pulling your leg and grabbed a bunch from the petrol station.

I wouldn’t be sorting this tho, your DH should. It’s definitely a double whammy to be presented with a crap bunch of flowers then have to complain to the shop yourself about them to recoup your DH some money. I’d be abit disappointed he’d given them me in the first place!

Gagaandgag · 16/02/2026 20:53

Wow! The absolute cheek of that florist

Gowlett · 16/02/2026 20:58

This is why I hate getting flowers…
I know where to buy them, and what to pay.
DH (and all of the men) don’t.
Fair play to your DH saying something.
They should deffo refund you!

Helen1625 · 16/02/2026 20:59

To echo what most have already said, there is no way, even with prices hiked for valentines, that these flowers are worth £80. They look wilted/half dead and the whole display looks thrown together. Very poor.

Yes, you should go back, either you or your husband, it doesn't matter who, then follow up with an online review. Regardless of what they do to rectify it, that's if they do anything, you can include this in your review. But definitely write the review. To give a snooty response then carry on serving customers is no way to treat customers at all.

Ablondiebutagoody · 16/02/2026 21:00

Total rip off. There's about 9 dead roses there.

Name and shame!

Cola32 · 16/02/2026 21:01

Well yabu for thinking these could pass as £25 M&S flowers.

I don’t know much about floristry, but I would pass this even if it was £5 in the reduced aisle of a supermarket. The petals are wilted and there’s barely anything in the bouquet.

Demand a full refund and if not, scathing google review with photos as others have suggested. No second chances either, given their rudeness to your husband at the till.

That is just daylight robbery, I genuinely cannot understand what they were thinking.

BlackCat14 · 16/02/2026 21:01

That’s poor. My boyfriend got me six roses with some extra bits of foliage for £15 from Tesco and they look much more impressive than those ones!

Not trying to stir the shit, but was the receipt definitely for that bunch?
I can’t believe he’d actually accept that and leave the shop.

Allseeingallknowing · 16/02/2026 21:01

stollenisthebest · 16/02/2026 19:17

Is it 12 roses with foliage? Surely roses are always double price at Valentine's - so if it looks like £40-50 worth, then £80 isn't too surprising.

It is for dead roses. They should have been binned

ConvolutedCat · 16/02/2026 21:03

I wouldn’t even pay a fiver for those - they’re clearly past it

BlueMum16 · 16/02/2026 21:04

Blankfluff · 16/02/2026 20:10

they’re my favourite flowers

How many individual roses are there? A dozen?
So £6.50 each plus a bit for the green stuff?

I would expect no more than £5 a rose on valentine's.

Give them opportunity to put it right. If not an honest review, with a photo.

CoffeeBeansGalore · 16/02/2026 21:10

Two bouquets from www.bunches.co.uk which I think are the closest to yours. The prices are in the pictures.

I'm not sure they can put it right to be honest. The flowers were for valentine's day and if they had wanted to resolve the issue they could have and should have done so on Saturday. Anything they do now will be too late and would still leave me feeling very underwhelmed.
