AIBU To Feel Ripped off by a florist?

My partner had arranged to collect my Valentine’s Day flowers on Saturday morning, which he’d ordered and paid £80 for earlier that week for collection.

However, when he went to collect them, he couldn’t believe what he was presented with. He complained at the time that he didn’t believe the bouquet was worth anywhere near what he’d paid for, others in the store collecting flowers agreed with him but the florists dealing with the collection just gave him a snooty response and carried on serving other customers. He called me to explain, but I had assumed he’d been dramatic, however, when he presented me with them, I was equally shocked, I can’t have thought these would be more than £40 from a good florist or maybe £25 from M&S.

Looking to get some other opinions, would you be happy with these flowers for £80? Personally, I think he should have been offered a partial refund if he wasn’t happy, or that they could have added a little to the bouquet to fill it out a tad. But equally very happy to be told this is what flowers cost and we should adjust our expectations accordingly

YABU - this is good value for money
YANBU - they have had his pants down

He was fleeced. I got supermarket roses which were better presented than that and not half dead!

So did I!!

@Blankfluff He was ripped off!

Unfortunately they look nothing like that in real life!
I’ve used them a couple of times previously and never again

Sorry to hear that. I've used them for over 5 years & never been disappointed.

Viviennemary · 16/02/2026 22:50

They look nearly dead. Terrible. Ask for a refund. Report them to trading standards.

I would definitely say they weren't worth £80, even allowing for price increases due to valentines day.
For that price I would expect the flowers to look much fresher, and for there to be more of them.

A family member bought cream roses at sainsburys a month ago. Some of them were still going a few days ago!

I have attached pictures of a bouquet from m&s. Not sure on the original price, but they were at our local petrol station that has a simply food. I went in for petrol about 9pm. I was given these for free as I left - the date meant they would have needed to be thrown out. Acfew others in store at the same time were offered some as they left too.

Despite not being to sell them the next day due to the date, they look in better condition than the ones your husband was given.

I think you should go in together. Your husband purchased them so he should go, but they have fobbed him off once already. May not be so easy if there are two of you.

Now that was a really nice gesture from M&S - look lovely still too - way better than OPs

sesquipedalian · 16/02/2026 23:01

OP, anything you buy has to be fit for the purpose for which it was sold, and I think it is reasonable to expect cut flowers to last a minimum of five days. I’d take the bunch back tomorrow and show them that the petals are already beginning to drop and the flowers are looking “very sad” - not acceptable. Like others, I’m shocked that a florist would actually let your DH leave the shop with such a bunch, and for eighty quid? Disgraceful.

Zov · 16/02/2026 23:03

Oh my days they're awful, sorry @Blankfluff I would want someone to pay me to take them off their hands! 😆

Seriously, I'm so sorry, you/your partner have been ripped off. Shoulda been £5 tops. DH got me a bunch of (12) tulips from Tesco over the weekend that were £6! Gorgeous and colourful and look lovely in the window in the lovely vase I put them in. Some people mock supermarket flowers, but IME, they are much better than some you get from florists, and online delivery services.

Someone sent me a flatpack of flowers 3 years ago for my birthday, and they were drab, and flat, and colourless, and there was only about 7 or 8 flowers. Looked like £3 worth. Turned out they spent £23!

Better quality at Sainsbury's for 25 quid

Or Tesco for £6. Or Morrisons for £7. Or any supermarket for less than a tenner!

NoFiller · 16/02/2026 23:13

I can’t believe the responses on here.

£80 is a very fair price for those.

£10 for the flowers. £70 for the florist’s time spending a couple of hours drying them out with a hairdryer and stamping on them.

Emptyandsad · 16/02/2026 23:16

I got two bunches (I'm such a player 🙄) of a dozen roses each on Valentines evening for a fiver each. The roses were quite small headed but were a lot nicer than what you got.

Anyahyacinth · 16/02/2026 23:24

Apologies if it’s already been said but if they refused a refund I’d try for a refund from my credit card, if paid that way, putting the item in dispute. The photos make your argument

So many half dead flowers this year. I think the weather temps have done the damage.

WaryHiker · 16/02/2026 23:53

I can't believe your husband left the shop with those! He must be spectaculary unassertive.

Send him back with pictures of the flowers as they were when he picked them up, and take the actual flowers back too. Also print out this thread and hand it to them. Tell him you haven't named the actual florist ... yet! But you thought they should see what other people think of their products and prices.

And then insist on a full refund. The moment you start saying you want £50 back, you are implicitly telling them the product they sold you is worth £30. That really weakens your argument when they are clearly not worth anything at all.

If the florist is reading this thread, you need to up your game, read up about customer service, refund this guy, and offer a replacement flower arrangement as an apology.

Wetcoatsandmudagain · 17/02/2026 00:01

What an embarrassing situation for your poor husband to be in let alone the disappointment. I would have presented them back to them Monday morning requesting a full refund!

CRD67 · 17/02/2026 00:11

This is when social media and online reviews are invaluable. Post the pictures and comment.

Holidaymodeon · 17/02/2026 00:20

Yabu for using the phrase ‘they’ve had his pants down’
also for trying to sort it out for your partner when it’s your gift

MooFroo · 17/02/2026 00:26

Valentine’s Day Florist flowers are always a rip off! I got hubby to agree never to buy on the day - he always buys me and DD flowers but a lovely big supermarket bunch which we both love and appreciate him for x

Every year my best friend gets a huge bunch of red roses, balloons etc from her hubby who is a useless A-hole most of the time but it makes her so happy he spends a fortune as she gets to post photo for the Gram so it’s all good apparently!

crazy commercialism!

Nothavingagoodvalentinesday · 17/02/2026 00:38

I think they look like very expensive roses which, of course, aren’t in season at the moment so maybe the price reflects this. Should have been filled out with lots of different coloured foliage though. I think I’d have been inclined not to accept them at the florist. Nothing you can do now though. Simply enjoy them. At least you got flowers. I didn’t get anything. Not even a Valentine’s Day kiss.

JillyComeLately · 17/02/2026 01:34

I shopped in Aldi 5 days ago, bought a bunch of roses, carnations and gypsophila for less than a fiver, they are still beautiful.

I would be fuming on your partners behalf. If the florist doesn't agree to a satisfactory refund, do as others have suggested.
Post a stinking review with pictures.

Bananainpyjamas1980 · 17/02/2026 02:10

Oh my gosh that's shocking! They are dying!
Tell your partner to use Bloom n wild, delivered in bud form but quality has been excellent in my opinion. I ordered for a friend several times for birthdays and two weeks later they are still going strong!

summitfever · 17/02/2026 02:14

Wouldn’t pay a tenner for that!

Iwantamarshmallowman · 17/02/2026 02:45

I'm not a huge fan of flowers becuase I think they are overpriced for somthing that dies but when I do need to send them I use bloom & wild. I think they are fairly reasonable and the flowers are always beautiful. I do think the florest is taking the piss here.

Darkladyofthesonnets · 17/02/2026 02:46

I don't think they look like expensive roses. They might have looked like expensive roses nearly a week ago though. They are very overblown. No amount of sugar and bleach pick me ups will rescue them for more than a day or two. I do think you have to pay extra for the demand for flowers on Valentines Day but this is just so disappointing if you have ordered. Luckily my birthday and wedding anniversary falls later in February so flowers are a lot more reasonable by then.

Friendlygingercat · 17/02/2026 02:54

For £80 I would expect a nice fresh bunch with some mixed foliage. I would not give more than £30 for those. Did he pay by card? Do a chargeback and post a factual review with photos.

SassyCow · 17/02/2026 03:15

Wow! YANBU. £80 for those, they're all wilted. Definitely leave a bad review and photos.
