Unfriending right wing friends

One of my school mum friends of around 10 years has started sharing loads of Restore Britain/Rupert Lowe posts.

I’m actually really shocked as she’s an Irish immigrant herself.

I’ve unfriended her which is a shame as day to day she’s ok. Also another mum who has been liking and commenting on the Restore Britain posts, they’ll probably tell me they’re not racist but I can’t be arsed calling them out.

Would you prefer they receive no healthcare if they fall ill while their case is being assessed?

Well they will be in company then wont they, given the parlous state of the NHS 😬

Good, quite right the venomous liberals' comments about Kirk's murder saw retribution. Are you really opening up a can of worms about which freedom of speech is acceptable, depending on its proponents? If the OP cares to listen, I'm sure she will learn a lot.

Freedom of speech is freedom of speech. There's not rule for one set of people and another for another set. You can argue that some comments are in poor taste, but to destroy people's livelihoods and punish them for what they said is utterly wrong. And the irony is that it's exactly what the far-right is claiming the left has done.
CK put himself out there and got killed, which was wrong. I personally consider that his views were toxic in many respects but the whole point of what he was doing was to let people tell him that to his face. To then have people fired over comments about him is authoritarian and downright fascistic.
And The Librarians gives a chilling view of censorship à la Fahrenheit 451 in ultra-conservative communities.

Abhannmor · 17/02/2026 17:07

I think a lot of people are taken in by simple solutions to complex problems. They likely don't know about the more extreme views of people like Rowe or Matt Goodwin. Or Nigel's new intellectual mate James Orr who thinks abortion should be banned completely regardless of circumstances.

Or perhaps they do and you're better off keeping them at arms length.

I am a conservative and have been since 1979. I regarded school mum friends as acquaintances and didn't overshare. The self righteous lefties would never have become more than acquaintances. Kindred spirits became my friends.

What do you mean by 'self righteous lefties'?
Just wondering.

Yes, I'd like to know if you could elaborate.

Those who think that their opinion is the only opinion. Think TRA's, pro Pally, those climate activists that glue themselves to roads etc.
We should be more like the Germans, they will dig out the tar with protesters hand still attached and send them on their way 🤣🤣

On the basis of this thread I have joined Lowe’s party. If he is committed to restoring the liberal, welcoming Christian ethos of the country I chose many years ago in which to raise my children, I applaud him.

It feels like a far cry from the UK today which triggers profound fear in me when I read of the treatment of worshipping Jews and trafficked working class girls (the wrong sort of victim it would apppear).

I’m not sure many who are lucky enough to have been raised in the West truly understand the existential
threat to our freedoms, especially those of women and other minorities, that we are facing.

I came here because I wanted to be free to have choice and live a truly liberated life. I am very confused by how many of my British female friends defend a way of life that would send women back to the Stone Age.

I would double-check where they stand on non-Christians if you have concerns about the treatment of Jews. Or indeed people of no faith at all. Or, indeed, working class people generally.

@Abhannmor100%. People are not aware of their extreme views

@Garlandedmantleyou’re absolutely entitled to support whoever you want, but I think it’s a huge leap to frame this as people “defending a way of life that sends women back to the Stone Age.” Most people who disagree with Lowe aren’t anti-freedom or anti-women - they just have different views on immigration, politics and how problems should be solved.

Issues like antisemitism, violence against women and trafficking are serious and complex, and they’ve been acknowledged and debated by governments and campaigners across the political spectrum. It isn’t a case of one side caring and the other not.

It’s also worth remembering he was recorded joking about a “Jewish camera,” which Jewish organisations condemned as antisemitic. He later said he didn’t recall saying it and that it was meant as a joke, but it doesn’t exactly fit the idea that he’s especially “Jewish-friendly.”

He’s the only person I have seen who’s put his money where his mouth is for the (I can barely get my head round this) tens or possibly hundreds of thousands of working class young girls that the state let down.

I don’t see specific reference to Jewish people in their manifesto, perhaps you could point me where to double check? TIA

I hadn’t seen the Jewish camera comments. Thank you.

I like his straightforward approach to immigration. I’ve seen it work in countries who put their own citizens at their heart.

Kindred in your hatred for brown people?

YouHaveAnArse · 17/02/2026 18:42

The heavy emphasis on the UK being a Christian country and Christianity being more integral to Britishness is inherently exclusionary to Jews, is it not? They've made it pretty clear there's no room for other Abrahamic religions in their vision.

I love that you think a far right party gives 1/10 of a fuck about working class girls of any colour. That would be the girls who were ignored because people just assumed they were common slags who were somehow asking for it, so I can't wait to see how a party that wants to see all sex taking place within the rightful Christian context of the nuclear family unit treats teenage victims of sexual assault. Or even white working class girls who want to access contraception or abortion.

I’ve had my eyes opened to many many feminist perspectives in the 15 or so years I’ve trodden these boards! I have Mumsnet to thank for many of the new concepts I’ve explored as an adult.

I don’t always agree but I’m always open to new ideas and having my mind changed.

YouHaveAnArse · 17/02/2026 18:43

Can't edit, but - I can't see a party taking that stance being particularly comfortable with largely closed/non-English using Orthodox communities, such as those in north London and Manchester, for example.

Miggledyhiggledy · 17/02/2026 18:44

It feels like one, doesn't it?

Is free speech still free speech when the speech is free about what offends thee? Or is free speech bunk when you call Kirk a cunt?

RosesAndHellebores · 17/02/2026 19:03

Plasticdreams · 17/02/2026 18:40

Kindred in your hatred for brown people?

How on earth do you extrapolate that? I'd say kindred in believing in a free market economy, a small state and individual responsibility.

Personally I have no issue with immigration or asylum providing it's legal. My maternal great great grandfather arrived in the UK as an economic migrant from County Cork, my matwrnal.grandfarher arrived in the UK aged 13 with his family who fled Russia via China and India pending finding a sponsor here and having lost everything and my father was from Berlin. His parents got him to Hamburg before Kristallnacht where he was taken in until he he got a place on Kinder Transport. He arrived in the UK aged 10. Not a single member of my family has ever received a benefit - they lived in poverty on arrival and worked.

I am Conservative. I am not and never shall be Reform.

However before I joined the school the mum told
me of the Chinese kids that had been cruel to her son and that kind of activated my spidey senses but at the time I thought well she’s Irish how can this be?! Anyway now I know she’s just plain racist.

So because she was unhappy that some "Chinese kids" had been cruel to her son (bullying?). She is a racist?
