Dogs bowl, what’s reasonable?

Terribly exciting topic, I know! The vet asked me how often I wash the dogs water bowl and I said it goes through the dishwasher on its own once a week. He said that was really not enough and it should be done every day. So do you?

cats rather than dogs. water bowl fresh every morning, same with dry food bowl, wet meat bowl, fresh each time - twice a day. water fountain topped up with a little fresh water every day, complete change once a week and deep clean and filter change monthly. bowls go through the dish washer with everything else. i’m fully aware they lick their own bums but i do like to keep their food and water bowls clean.

FoxRedPuppy · 07/02/2026 10:27

All dog stuff goes in dishwasher. If washed by hand I use the only sponge we have. I don’t get what’s gross about washing stuff together. I out raw chicken stuff in the dishwasher, which is definitely more harmful.

gingercat02 · 07/02/2026 10:44

Cat, but yes everyday. Only dry food, as she gets the runs with wet food, so a bowl does all day. In the dishwasher with everything else.
Water bowl gets washed when I remember!

I'd wash them in the big snk in the utility. I'd never put a dog bowl into the dishwasher. That's foul.

Same. Currently no dog but too many cats. Never put their bowls in the dishwasher or bowl I use for our dishes 🤢

Wet food bowls are washed twice daily, dry food and water bowls once daily (although there's only one who drinks water indoors, the rest prefer to drink from the koi pond).

Balloonhearts · 07/02/2026 10:48

I wash their bowls every day. Would you want to eat from the same plate or drink from the same glass for a week without washing it? That's disgusting.

I do with water. And my tea mug, washed once a week.

edwinbear · 07/02/2026 10:52

Cat gets a fresh bowl for every meal. She has a water fountain which is taken apart and cleaned once a week. I expect a clean plate for every meal and apply the same standards to our pet. It’s grim to only wash a food bowl once a week.

yumscrummy · 07/02/2026 10:53

More amazed that the bowl goes through the dishwasher on it’s own

That's not washing it. That's a brief rinse at best. Sorry but that is gross.

Yeah what a waste of water and energy!

No it’s not, they are animals that lick their bums and eat stuff they find on their walks including poo and rolling in fox shit! Stop humanising animals.

Dogs and cats lick their own - and other dog/cats - bums. Now THATS disgusting 🤣

Does she have a shower every day and Andrex to wipe her bum too?

ClaredeBear · 07/02/2026 20:16

the reason I wash the (visiting) dog’s bowl isn’t because I’m humanising it, it’s because I don’t want to have a stinky, stale bowl around that could attract pests. The dog wouldn’t mind at all and would probably suffer no ill consequences.

in any case. It’s really interesting to hear about the different approaches people take and why. Someone mentioned that dog germs are probably no different to prepping raw meat, which is something I’d not considered. I do worry about worms though - is that a thing?

I have never seen a cat or dog lick the bum of another. Are you aware that humans actually do lick each other's bums and genitals too?

Helpfullnelly · 05/02/2026 22:03

I wash it when its mucky. I will not allow anyone and that includes any vet to humanise my Animal.
I adore that dog and he has hos own personality and is the light of my life. But, hes a dog. And i keep him trained as a dog.
Also he drinks puddles and licks his arse so yeah, just whatever

Agree with this. I wash her bowl if it looks yucky. She has two steel bowls, one for food one for water.
She doesn't like wet dog food. It's dry kibble and water. She licks her own backside and anything else she can find on the ground.
She Is 13. Healthy as a trout.

Well I don’t ! Not bums anyway! Also, humans showers daily.

My dog licks his own arse and eats shite. He will survive an unrinsed bowl .

LoudPlumDog · 07/02/2026 23:41

See, I might have thought that but I thought I'll listen to the OP's vet. My dog's water bowl which was only rinsed and not washed regularly had a layer of slime on the bottom. Totally unbeknown to me. Now I scrub it with washing up liquid and hot water daily and it doesn't. While of course she's survived the slime, a clean bowl has got to be better.

Yes, I noticed that too. In the summer, it did not take long for slime to build up.
I find it bizarre that keep bowls clean is somehow humanising dogs. Some odd logic on here.
