Dogs bowl, what’s reasonable?

Terribly exciting topic, I know! The vet asked me how often I wash the dogs water bowl and I said it goes through the dishwasher on its own once a week. He said that was really not enough and it should be done every day. So do you?

You are quite right!

I was pondering whether or not to mention dead or alive things, but hesitated recounting the time, TRIGGER WARNING when she was a pup, she chased and caught a live squirrel just before it got high enough up the tree and promptly ate it...
We kept her shut away in the kitchen all night just in case there were any digestive consequences, but there were none. Just a sad looking pup wondering why she had been excluded for the duration...
She still remembers that tasty incident and still tries to chase squirrels but fortunately she is not so nimble these days...

😆😆😆😆 @ the delicate phrase “digestive consequences”

Bikergran · 05/02/2026 21:31

Wash all pet bowls daily.

Rarely! He's 11.5 and fit as a fiddle, loves to swim in the sea, as many walks as he can get (normally 2, but 3 today as my mum popped round and he persuaded her he hadn't been out yet) and playing with his toys, so I don't think it's harming him.

YouAndMeDays · 05/02/2026 21:36

Once every couple of weeks, probably. When I remember.

I don't even wash my own overnight water glass more than about once a week 😆

JayJayj · 05/02/2026 21:38

Every day.

DoggieNamechange · 05/02/2026 21:40

Yes, interested in his reason why

I'm usually super clean but as DDog drinks out of bogs, puddles and streams on the moors every day I can't see the bowl being an issue. Prob about once a fortnight for the water bowl and once a week for his dried food bowl.

Anything wet or human food in the dishwasher daily.

user2848502016 · 05/02/2026 21:41

I do yes, but also my dog drinks from puddles and streams most days and is fine!

This. 😂and another one where dog goes outside and drinks out the disgusting kids water table so her bowl is filled fresh each day but rarely washed.

My DDog must be weird. She very rarely drinks from anything but her water bowl.

Helpfullnelly · 05/02/2026 22:03

I wash it when its mucky. I will not allow anyone and that includes any vet to humanise my Animal.
I adore that dog and he has hos own personality and is the light of my life. But, hes a dog. And i keep him trained as a dog.
Also he drinks puddles and licks his arse so yeah, just whatever

MindYourUsage · 05/02/2026 22:07

Water bowl - cleaned once every 2 weeks ish. Change the water every few days though.

Food bowls in dishwasher after every meal (raw fed).

Off to clean her water bowl....

You make a very good point. My water bottle which I use daily is chucked in the dishwasher possibly every five weeks or so and I’m still alive! 😂

Oh wow She caught a live one?!, that's every dog's dream and she lived it!

I had the pleasure of pulling a dead for quite a long time bunny hide out of my dog's mouth hork hork 😧I would have welcomed a fresh dead squirrel

DDog is old and arthritic. She can only dream of Squirrel Sashimi Smile

RangAndRang · 05/02/2026 22:31

Food and water bowls get washed in the dishwasher every day.

redboxer321 · 05/02/2026 20:18

Well I'm a bloody mucky pup! I just swill her water bowl. Will change my ways. Thanks OP.

Me too. When it’s empty I swish and refill so that’s every other day. Shes nearly 12 and pretty good on it. They eat stuff off the ground FFS! Dog stuff doesn’t go in my dishwasher!!!!

CoastalCalm · 05/02/2026 22:34

Depends what he’s eating if it’s dry food and as a result the bowl is clean then once a week , if it’s wet food then it’s swapped over more frequently and water is just rinsed out when I refresh the bowl

My cats eat out of a clean cat bowl at every feed. Then I wash them all in the washer every 5 days. I have a lot of cat bowls!

willstarttomorrow · 05/02/2026 22:38

Cats have water bowls (and fussy old lady a glass topped up wherever she decides is her room for a while). All get refreshed and washed daily but they prefer to drink from a puddle.....

Catchycatchytune · 05/02/2026 22:38

My dog bowls go in the dishwasher. I’m 72 and the dirty, filthy habit hasn’t killed me yet.

SalmonOnFinnCrisp · 05/02/2026 22:41

Gross and not okay and I think I have fairly lax standards.

The water bowl was rinsed and cleaned daily.

In a pinch it gets a bit of rinse and fresh water then cleaned properly the next day.

Food bowl most days but def less fussy than the water as its dry mix.

MyThreeWords · 05/02/2026 22:42

I swish it out when I change the water, but an actual wash?? About once a month probably!

Dog prefers manky water from the shower floor, though.

His absolute favourite is hot water from my bath. It dawned on me the other day that this is actually a very watery and undercooked human soup, and perhaps what he would really, really like would be if I was cooked through a bit more thoroughly

FrozenFebruary · 05/02/2026 22:46

Twice a day at least. They put as much n the bowl as they drink out of it! mucky sods (Labradors) & I like it be clean& fresh.

they like puddles & bowls outside too, but I like the one in the kitchen to look nice & clean not like it houses swamp life!£
