Dogs bowl, what’s reasonable?

Terribly exciting topic, I know! The vet asked me how often I wash the dogs water bowl and I said it goes through the dishwasher on its own once a week. He said that was really not enough and it should be done every day. So do you?

All my dogs have refused water in bowls, preferring puddles, to the point of licking the pavement if it was raining, drinking dew off the grass. Always had fresh water but no. One in particular like to drink out of my glass if I had a pint of water. So no, I didn’t wash them very often!

Why is that cruel?

Genuine question.

Would you want to drink out of a cup that was only washed once a week?

dogsbowl · 06/02/2026 11:05

@G00dnightJimBobI put all 4 bowls in at once and that takes up most the space except the top cutlery rack. I could maybe squeeze a glass or two around them.

Wash it every day but with a separate brush/scourer.

I have water bottle that I admit does not get a dishwasher type clean every day. It gets a rinse and refilled. Or just refilled during the day, without a rinse, shock horror.
And I am still here to tell you this tale.

I have to wonder if you know what actual animal cruelty is though.

YourWinter · 06/02/2026 11:30

I don’t use a dishwasher but my dogs’ water bowls are properly washed every morning, and rinsed and refilled as needed through the day. Food dishes, plates, kongs, lickimats, anything in contact with food, are properly washed after every use. Soft toys go through the washing machine weekly with their blankets and Equafleeces.

If you have a glass of water to sip as and when, surely you wouldn’t leave it a week between washes? And you don’t get as much saliva in your water as your dog does in theirs. Washing weekly is lazy and revolting.

I do 😆 I have a plastic glass next to my bed which I just empty and refill each day. I doubt it even gets washed weekly. And yet here I am!

YouAndMeDays · 06/02/2026 09:15

Yes, in with all the other dishes. I put them in the lower basket so they get a good wash. My washes run at 60 degrees.

If you don't trust your dishwasher to clean your dog bowls, then how can you trust it to wash anything else?!

I agree, I just wasn’t sure putting everything in together was the right thing to do but it’s certainly easier. I think ours is 60 degrees so I’ll go back to that. Thanks.

Yes i wash it every day usually at breakfast time, if you feel the bottom of a water bowl it can be slimy and i imagine breeding ground for bacteria.

Same 😬. I take it down and wash it properly when I remember, otherwise it just gets rinsed and refilled every night.

Coffeeishot · 06/02/2026 11:41

I just handwash dog bowls.

Tiptopflipflop · 06/02/2026 11:43

Lots of dogs are sensitive to the taste of a stagnant tap water dirty bowl and will drink more out of a clean bowl. Mine all certainly have, despite being happy to drink puddles. Strange creatures.

GalaxyJam · 06/02/2026 11:44

The water is never in my dog’s bowl long enough to get stagnant.

Tiptopflipflop · 06/02/2026 17:37

Sorry my post was poorly worded. They can get funny about the bowl not being washed regularly. Then they only like to drink the water when it is first put in the vowl, but once the fresh water has sat in the dirty bowl for half an hour they can get funny about drinking that fresh water.

@Favouritefruits i do! My tea mug can’t go in dishwasher so I wash it by hand once a week. Otherwise I just empty and refill. I often have a glass in my bedroom that I refill each night for weeks on end!

Ah ok, my dog doesn’t have that issue. She’s 17 (and going strong!) and she’s never been fussed about water sitting for a few hours in her bowl.

Snap. Though I only drink Green/ camomile/ peppermint tea and no milk or sugar so it’s literally hot water.

eachtigertires · 06/02/2026 22:45

Dog and cat bowls get washed daily because they eat raw food. Water gets done daily also. When they were on dry food their bowls got done never, not a single time that I can remember.

longtompot · 06/02/2026 23:13

Oh gosh, her water bowl got cleaned once or twice a week, sometimes longer. Her food bowl was after each meal

FrozenFebruary · 06/02/2026 23:55

DramaAlpaca · 06/02/2026 00:05

Some of you wash dog and cat bowls in the dishwasher? Urrgh, yuk! Disgusting. I'm no hygiene fiend but no way would I do that.

Mine get washed in the utility room sink every couple of days.

Mind you, the dog prefers to drink the water left in the tray after my morning shower, either that or from a puddle.

I agree, I hand wash all the pets things in the utility sink. Previously when I've not had one they've been hand washed in the kitchen sink & that has been bleached afterwards.

Sallycanwait44 · 06/02/2026 23:57

Every day sometimes a few times a day I give it a scrub and replace the water

FrozenFebruary · 07/02/2026 00:00

ClaredeBear · 06/02/2026 08:04

I’m interested to find out HOW people wash their dog bowls. In the kitchen sink, dishwasher, elsewhere…and alone or with other dishes? Washing up liquid or disinfectant?

(In the utility sink, by hand, fairy liquid and pets dishes ONLY) dish brush. Air dry usually but if needed immediately paper towel.

when we didn't have a utility sink, then in the main sink after human dishes, the. Sink bleached clean.

never in the dishwasher. Turns my stomach, especially as a vegetarian.

FrozenFebruary · 07/02/2026 00:04

ClaredeBear · 06/02/2026 08:32

Thanks. That’s useful to know. I keep a separate sponge under the sink for washing the dog bowl. I guess I’m wondering if anyone washes their dog bowl with the day to day dishes as I know someone who does this and I’m wondering if I’m too fussy! I used a spot of bleach at one point but stopped doing that.

Oh that's revolting.

YeOldeGreyhound · 07/02/2026 00:10

I never washed my dog's water bowl everyday, probably a couple of times per week. Just gave it a rinse and refilled between washes.
She always preferred manky water in the garden. I had a trug that I dumped old soil and dead plants in that filled up with rain water, and it was her go to for a drink.
I also washed her bowls up with the same sponge that used for my dishes. It is getting washed. Nothing bad will happen.

chattyness · 07/02/2026 00:41

My dog gets fed twice a day and I wash both dishes after his meals every day. Water attracts dust & hair and the can get slimey if left. I know some dogs drink puddle water on walks, but mine doesn't, he will only drink fresh water out of the burn or his own collapsible bowl that I take with us. I would not want to drink dusty, hairy slimey water and I don't want my dog to either.
