Vocal fry

Is it just me or are more and more people speaking with a vocal fry? It’s so common, it has to be intentional. I absolutely can’t stand it.

MAFS Australia used to be my guilty pleasure but I had to give it up because I couldn’t take listening to all those guys horrible voices. Now I feel like every video I see online has someone speaking like it and my body does this weird, scrunched up thing because I hate it so much.

I’m middle aged but the young women I see in my company are more confident than you or I could ever dream, which seems to annoy some women unfortunately.

Oh bless you @nomas - trying in vain to make this a feminist issue!

When people want to tell younger women how to speak, it is a feminist issue. Why doesn’t she want to tell the men how to speak.

So defensive.

But others have said his vocal fry is so bad it makes them physically react.

Others are talking nonsense. By all means, show us a clip of him speaking with vocal
fry.

ilovepixie · 02/02/2026 19:57

Why do they do it! Really gets on my tits. The worst is that Molly Mae person and the washing powder advert. Makes me heave

She says in the post who the author of the research is. Find a equally robust study that reaches the opposite conclusion if you want, but what’s the point of making fun of her?

Why should I need to find a rebuttal for what's arrant nonsense.

WeirdyBeardyMarrowBabyLady · 02/02/2026 20:00

And just to say if David Mitchell does do it then he’s the inventor of VF because he’s had the same voice since That Mitchell and Webb Sound!

Vaguelyclassical · 02/02/2026 20:00

Surprised that nobody has pointed out the many (usually) female pop (for want of a better word) singers these days who suffer from the curse of the vocal fry. One feels that they couldn't perform and project a song without a microphone to save their lives but they will, er, cuddle the mike doing the ol' vocal fryI

One of the participants in Couples Therapy was like this, one of the women in the thrupple. It was bloody annoying and hard to listen to.

I'd be interested to know why people do it.

Which one - the main partner who was acrobat or the secondary partner?

dying to know what it is

Idleplum · 02/02/2026 20:09

For those of you who don’t know what it is, it really would be easier for you to just google it and listen to examples.

Please don’t try and turn this into “everyone hates women”. I for one hate all people equally.

She’s posted details of a proper peer reviewed study and you’re just name calling. You’re embarrassing yourself.

Not as much as silly dafties that put on that awful vocal fry affectation.

What’s a vocal fry?

Like the Kardashians speak

Wishthingswerenouting · 02/02/2026 20:17

This and also saying every sentence like it’s a question

Daisey12 · 02/02/2026 18:51

Along with upspeak which makes every statement sound like a question. I’m recruiting for a director role in my team at the moment and have rejected two woman for using it as it makes them come across as seriously lacking confidence

I used to work with a woman who was outstanding in her job, all over it, knew everything. She spoke in a perfectly ordinary voice. Except when she spoke in public when she always upspoke, and yes, it made her sound uncertain. This was a real drawback to me as her particular role meant she was informing, giving out facts.

I’ve just listened to David Mitchell reading “Unruly” on Audible. He does not have vocal fry. He’s his usual nasally self.

My best friend does this sometimes. I've no idea what sets her off but I really have to grit my teeth. One day I'm going to explode and say "Why do you DO that?!?"

But I'd never heard of vocal fry. Annoying!

ASometimeThing · 02/02/2026 20:28

It is The Most Annoying thing. Coupled with upspeak and I’m fantasising about murder.

I’ve only noticed silly, affected women doing it.

bloodredfeaturewall · 02/02/2026 20:43

one of the narrators of the rest is classified.

hurts my throat listening.

A workmate of mine, in his 40s at the time, spoke with this uptalk affectation. He had two teenage daughters so I suppose he got it off them. It was so f#cking irritating. He's worked from home since 2020 so I've no idea if he still does it.

ChurchWindows · 02/02/2026 20:58

I love Banjo Beale but he combines vocal fry with an upward inflection.

It's very American. The worst is vocal fry combined with pronouncing all statements like a question shudder

Oldgoatinaboat · 02/02/2026 21:07

Never heard of google?

Wow, only 2 posts in before someone asks what it is instead of doing a simple google search which would be quicker

Darkdiamond · 02/02/2026 21:11

Oh why oh why does everything have to be misogyny? I find that 1) its mostly women who do it and 2)I find it really annoying. Women mostly do that duck face pout in selfies too, and I also think that looks ridiculous but its not because women do it, its because it would be annoying no matter who did it! I also spread my annoyance when people do annoying things without distinction between the sexes.

Arraminta · 02/02/2026 21:16

So bloody annoying. However, it does gave the virtue of instantly alerting you to the fact that the speaker is an intellectual pygmy.

TheGoddessAthena · 02/02/2026 21:17

I have turned off so many podcasts after 30 seconds because the host has unbearable vocal fry.

SnowyRock · 02/02/2026 21:34

It sounds whiney. Is unbearable.
