Taking the Dog on Holiday Without Telling the Caravan Site… Am I Mad?!

1000 replies

oceanmountain · 02/02/2026 15:11

So I’m going away in a couple of weeks and had a dog sitter all sorted… and now they’ve just cancelled because of a family emergency.

I’ve tried everywhere and can’t find anyone else to take the dog on such short notice, and I really don’t want to cancel the trip and upset the kids. So I was thinking of just taking the dog with me and not telling the caravan site.

Has anyone ever done this? My dog’s tiny and doesn’t shed, so I honestly don’t know how they’d even notice.

My friend said I shouldn't do it but I cant see any other option?

How bloody arrogant of you. What about families that would never book a dog friendly caravan because they dont want to be sat on a sofa that a dog has been on ? I have a dog but understand that not everyone likes the smell of dogs ( yes non dog owners can smell your dog).
You choose to have a dog so suffer the consequences.

this can't be a real poster

OrigamiOwls · 02/02/2026 18:52

It doesn't really sound like you think there is the slightest chance that you may possibly be being unreasonable here

Unless it's an invisible, silent dog, I don't see how this is even possible.

This comment made me laugh at the end of a shite day 😂😂

There would be no children in my van with allergies and I will clean before I go? and surely the site cleans the caravans too... no hair will be left as she's a non shedding breed

I own a caravan, and my child has allergies that then trigger his asthma. You’re being very selfish if you do this. No matter how much you clean, if the next person staying has allergies it will impact them. Put the dog in kennels.

Its a dog friendly site but I don't have a dog friendly caravan and they have non left.

Not going to lie op ,,I've done it and all was fine 🤷🙈

WhatATimeToBeAlive · 02/02/2026 18:56

I'm sad that you didn't want to take your pooch on holiday with you in the first place. Any hols in the UK, the dog comes too - she's family.

Fine for you. Maybe not for the owner of the caravan, or the next guests.

ffsnewusername · 02/02/2026 18:57

Please do NOT do this. My sister is badly allergic to dog dander, so much so that her scalp literally bulges and her eyes swell shut. Shes also severely asthmatic and books caravans that don’t allow pets due to this. You could literally kill someone. Don’t do it!

Was it or did the next person in the van end up with a ruined holiday due to allergies? You can’t possibly know!

Salvadoridory · 02/02/2026 18:58

Dont do that, its really mean and downright dishonest. If you care about dogs, dont make people hate them. People with allergies dont deserve this, they book dog free caravans in good faith and will blame the business owners. All round a really, really shitty thing to do and if you are just honest, they can do the extra clean or shuffle things about. If you go ahead, I hope karma shits on you in return.

I’m hoping this is a wind up, and not another post by a selfish entitled twat.

Don’t hold your breath, @PS5Gamer.

@oceanmountain is not going to listen to anyone on here.

Well they never kept my deposit soooooo 🤷

LAMPS1 · 02/02/2026 19:02

Are you going to teach your children to cover up the deception and break the rules which after all, are for the comfort of all paying guests, not just you.

It’s not going to end well if the children are taught to believe that rules are for everybody else but not for them.

It’s an uncomfortable problem for you I agree, but you really should think of a different solution.

Tableforjoan · 02/02/2026 19:02

liamharha · 02/02/2026 19:00

Well they never kept my deposit soooooo 🤷

Private rental then? As haven/butlins/park don’t take a holding deposit.

ffsnewusername · 02/02/2026 19:03

@liamharha What a selfish creature you are.

Whaleandsnail6 · 02/02/2026 19:03

Of course you are being unreasonable.

Unfortunately, plans can change at the very last minute. Its disappointing to miss your holiday but that doesn't mean you can just do whatever suits you, stuff everyone else.

Ewock · 02/02/2026 19:03

liamharha · 02/02/2026 18:55

Not going to lie op ,,I've done it and all was fine 🤷🙈

What you mean to say is that you were fine because you didnt get caught.
You have no idea how it may have affected others staying after you. Just another example of a selfish person too stupid to use critical thinking.

ShodAndShadySenators · 02/02/2026 19:05

Bumbelinaaa · 02/02/2026 15:41

It’s really surprising that your tiny, non barking, non shedding dog, that can be left for multiple hours unsupervised, has nobody willing to look after it with a couple of weeks notice 🤔

I'm betting that it's a lot more trouble than OP's making out or she would have booked a dog-friendly caravan in the first place. Otherwise she would have no difficulty in finding another dog-sitter, friend or family member who would happily take this canine paragon on for a week.

I'd rather book my animal into kennels than have the worry that someone is going to spot that there's a dog where it shouldn't be and report me. I don't think I could relax properly knowing that while I'm watching the entertainment, the dog might get stressed and wee on the sofa then start barking its little head off.

oceanmountain · 02/02/2026 15:14

What if its not dog friendly because of allergies?

I think its quite selfish to take the dog for this reason

Lucia573 · 02/02/2026 19:11

Just put it in kennels? Either near home or near the site.

Tiswa · 02/02/2026 19:12

This just highlights the general issue with allergies in that people don’t get them, they (and I very much imagine you are one @liamharha) how dangerous things that th vast majority are fine with.

DD was nearly hospitalised from cats and wr have to monitor it very carefully (as do I) taking antihistamines if we know we are around animals and we aren’t even that bad anymore

and here there is an expectation that there is no dog hair because here is the thing @oceanmountain there is no such thing as a completely non shedding dog - everyone sheds (including is hair and skin) it is just levels

SossijWoll · 02/02/2026 19:16

We once booked a ‘non-dogs’ lodge on a site, as DC1 is severely allergic to dogs, which caused significant breathing and eye issues every time they came into contact with any dog. Upon entering this accommodation, it was immediately clear that a dog/dogs had stayed in it as it smelt of dogs so strongly. The site manager assured us that no dogs were allowed in this particular lodge but we knew they had, as after 1 night, DC1 was really poorly. The manager was adamant that we were mistaken; there were no other lodges available to move to and they declined to refund us. We had booked in for a week but had to return home after just one night, with 2 very upset DC and one of them very unwell.

Please don’t take DDog OP.

I don't know if you are selfish or stupid.

It's not about children with you. It's about subsequent guests. And dogs shed more allergens than their fur.
