Taking the Dog on Holiday Without Telling the Caravan Site… Am I Mad?!

1000 replies

oceanmountain · 02/02/2026 15:11

So I’m going away in a couple of weeks and had a dog sitter all sorted… and now they’ve just cancelled because of a family emergency.

I’ve tried everywhere and can’t find anyone else to take the dog on such short notice, and I really don’t want to cancel the trip and upset the kids. So I was thinking of just taking the dog with me and not telling the caravan site.

Has anyone ever done this? My dog’s tiny and doesn’t shed, so I honestly don’t know how they’d even notice.

My friend said I shouldn't do it but I cant see any other option?

OP, why do you think caravan sites have pet free vans if it’s fine to have a dog in any van with a bit of cleaning?

You have been left in a pickle but I think you need to find another solution.

My DC’s partner is a student vet nurse and does live in dog sitting, and is a responsible and devoted carer. The apps have screened and vetted their dog sitters.

My friend uses one of these agencies and has always had an excellent experience with the people who have cared for her dog.

Or there are people who take a dog into their home.

I can't believe you can't find a dog sitter tbh. It's not like you have a large breed or a dog with medical issues. So I bet you could find someone.

Yogabearmous · 02/02/2026 19:25

a child with a dog allergy could use the Caravan after you and be really ill .
please think of others .

Dogs are everywhere in holiday parks, you cant stop a person taking their dog for a walk near you van. People walk their dogs around the whole site.

That's people with permission to have a dog there. You won't.

Accept it.

Make alternative arrangements or don't go.

My child has such severe allergies to dander and fur that she breaks out in weeping, red raw eczema if she comes into any contact with dog/cat used furniture. It can trigger an asthmatic reaction which can be deadly. I would be livid and probably sue the caravan park if their dog-free accommodation had residual pet dander/fur in it. Don't be so utterly selfish.

THIS

We went away as a group of friends and residual pet hair in the holiday let caused my friend to be hospitalised.

SlashBeef · 02/02/2026 19:31

You're going to do whatever you want so why ask? Never understand posts like this.

SnapAndFartAllDayLong · 02/02/2026 19:32

Don’t be a selfish cu*t!!! Others after you may have a severe allergy. There’s a reason why some caravans are dog friendly and others aren’t

Shittyyear2025 · 02/02/2026 19:33

oceanmountain · 02/02/2026 15:36

Dogs never been in kennels so not an option.

I mean, it is an option.

Taking a dog to a caravan where the Ts and Cs expressly forbid you taking a dog means THAT is not an option.

Utterly selfish attitude.

CheddarCheeseAndCrispSandwich · 02/02/2026 19:33

You are being an utter dick! 👌🏻

Fair better to massively disappoint your children, clearly, OP! That's the Right Thing To Do.

Don't break a fucking Rule, whatever you do.

Somerimes Mumsnet really grinds my gears.

Whether it's on balance the best thing to do to take your dog to this particular caravan, I don't know. There is the risk of getting caught..... You'll have to weigh it up. I know lots of people do similar all the time and get away with it. Of course they do. And if they burn in Hell afterwards - well so be it.

But the posts I have read here, bascially implying you are some kind of monstrously evil psychopath and a MURDERER (because undoubtedly the people staying in the caravan after you will have a fatal dog allergy, which will be triggered no matter how hard you clean the place....) for daring to think that you might put your kids' well being above the need to comply with regulations.....

I have no idea how some posters function in the real world.

You reckon it’s ok to break this rule? I have a DP with a severe dog and cat allergy. Not a bit of sniffing and eye watering (that’d be me) but the proper unable to breathe, could end up in hospital type of allergy. And weirdly enough, the chances of someone coming along after the OP with a potentially fatal allergy are higher than usual because, ya know, it’s supposed to be a dog free space. I don’t know how you function in the real world if you can’t apply a bit of logic.

StarChamber · 02/02/2026 19:37

oceanmountain · 02/02/2026 15:25

well my car would be right next to the caravan?... Id just walk it out and put it in.... Iv never seen a member of staff near my van before....🤔

Why are you bothering asking, then? You’re going to do it anyway.

So many strange dog threads today.

thinkofsomethingdifferent · 02/02/2026 19:38

OP has already made up her mind, sod the rest of us and with allergies. I’d be able to tell within a few minutes if a dog had been in a caravan. So as she’s going to do it anyway, here’s hoping someone spots this doggy smuggling and they get escorted off site. Create some wonderful memories for the kids…

Debtcrusher · 02/02/2026 19:41

oceanmountain · 02/02/2026 15:17

Dog is very small, thing toy breed and doesn't bark.

I would take it out with me in the day for a walk but would be left in the van for a hour or 2 in the evening while we see the entertainment on site/arcades for the kids.

And because the dog is not used to its surroundings it is liable to bark incessantly when you are gone with kids… and at strangers passing y the window.., or because it is distressed at being left behind…
I know this because we own a mobile. We have a small dog and she is allowed on site - there are regulations in that she is not allowed off lead or to be allowed to bark incessantly if we were to go away for a few hours (she comes with us).
The rules are the rules.

auserna · 02/02/2026 19:42

oceanmountain · 02/02/2026 15:19

There would be no children in my van with allergies and I will clean before I go? and surely the site cleans the caravans too... no hair will be left as she's a non shedding breed

There are children who might use the caravan other than your own.

Londonrach1 · 02/02/2026 19:43

Unless dog friendly caravan do not take your dog as the next guest could be severely allergic. Yabu. Talk to the site owner and change caravans if not dog friendly

YeOldeGreyhound · 02/02/2026 19:46

Geronimode · 02/02/2026 19:30

THIS

I can believe that.
I have stayed in a caravan where we were not allowed to consume shellfish inside the caravan at all as the owner had a life threatening allergy to shellfish that could be triggered by the tiniest amount.
We obliged. The caravan belonged to a friend so we rented it directly off of them.

Stompythedinosaur · 02/02/2026 19:47

I think you have a decent chance of being kicked off the site.

I can't believe you can't find a dog-sitter, have you tried rover.com? You could look for a sitter near home or a sitter near the caravan site.

gototogo · 02/02/2026 19:47

You can’t leave dogs in caravans in the evening. Just book into kennels

Lucyccfc68 · 02/02/2026 19:51

GallonHat · 02/02/2026 15:23

It's not the hair, it's the smell.

Dog owners are nose blind, but the rest of us know when a dog has been in an enclosed space. Even a teeny tiny little one. They all stink.

You beat me to it. My friends who have dogs absolutely swear blind that you cannot tell as their homes don’t smell of ‘dog’.

Their houses 100% smell of dog.

DeanStockwell · 02/02/2026 19:52

Why did you bother with this post , lots and lots have said no you can't take your dog but you seem to be determined to take it.

You said it doesn't moult but generally speaking most people are allergic to the dander ( skin flakes) not the fur .

The cleaning team will not have the time or know they need to vacuum every nook and cranny to get the dander up.

I would imagine there will also be a price difference too or are you going to seek that past the owners too.?

watchingthishtread · 02/02/2026 19:53

Is it ok if I smoke in my non smoking accommodation? I'll open the windows and spray air freshener before I leave. People are allowed to smoke elsewhere on the site so no one would ever know.

EmeraldShamrock000 · 02/02/2026 19:55

It is not worth the risk. One of the guests will inform the staff, it’ll run your holiday.

AfraidToRun · 02/02/2026 19:59

oceanmountain · 02/02/2026 15:36

Dogs never been in kennels so not an option.

Well it is an option, you just don't like it. You will clearly do what you want so need not say anymore.

Lulu1919 · 02/02/2026 20:05

Can dog sleep in car and not come into van ?

Notthehill · 02/02/2026 20:08

OP people are giving you a hard time, but I say go for it! No one will notice or care. Is it possible to bring a small crate with you, just in case you need it? I have a tiny dog and have gone to huge lengths and expense to have it looked after while I'm away, only to find that absolutely no one would have noticed or cared if I'd brought her.
