To not get the visceral levels of hatred people have for Keir Starmer

LastChristmasigaveyousomesocks · 29/01/2026 19:58

I’m not suggesting he’s the greatest prime minister ever. I’m not even suggesting he’s good at all. But some people really, really passionately hate him.

He is a bit insipid and doesn’t have much charisma but overall he seems like a decent enough bloke who perhaps lacks the political skill and acumen he needs. He’s out of his depth basically.

But that’s not a reason to actually despise someone is it?

When did we get to a point where we can’t just disagree without painting the other person as the devil incarnate?

I don’t despise him but he’s a bit of a wet lettuce. Totally crumbles around Trump like a pathetic little mouse.

Nosejobnelly · 30/01/2026 07:49

I agree with all you say. I had high hopes for him, he hasn’t lived up to them but also don’t get the hate. I feel he’s a decent bloke out of his depth.

Superhansrantowindsor · 30/01/2026 07:50

I think he’d be a nice bloke to live next door to. He’d put your bin out if you were away and water the plants. But for running the country he seems totally hopeless. Watching him grovel to china was sickening.

xanthomelana · 30/01/2026 07:52

Abd80 · 29/01/2026 20:29

It’s all the right wing tabloids badmouthing him and anyone from labour
personally I think he’s a silver fox
and a human rights lawyer to boot !

A human rights lawyer who has removed trail by jury, had people imprisoned for social media comments and cancelled local elections, he doesn’t seem to want people to have rights.

ZenNudist · 30/01/2026 07:59

Pootles34 · 29/01/2026 20:21

I like him - nice to have a sensible boring grown up in charge for once.

Absolutely this. It was awful under the Tories changing leaders and reshuffling the cabinet every 5 minutes. And their leaders went steadily downhill until the nadir of Truss.

I think Starmer is making the best of a bad situation. We need a miracle worker, and he's not that!

Sparron · 30/01/2026 06:56

Which ones are not true?

Some of the statements are true. Some are ridiculously blatant lies. And others are deliberately distorted half truths.

If you can't tell the difference without someone spelling it out to you, then it's clear that the conspiracy crap that you have been consuming is seriously addling your brain. Might be time to review where you're getting your information from.

It's perfectly legitimate to criticise Starmer's policies or his leadership style. It isn't reasonable to just fabricate and misrepresent.

DeftGoldHedgehog · 30/01/2026 08:03

Me neither, OP. The hyperbole and hysteria is incredible.

Pineneedlesincarpet · 30/01/2026 08:05

I dont hate KS as I don't know him. But I don't like him because he gives the impression that he seems to dislike large swathes of the country and he does things that don't appear to be in our national interest. I don't know whether that's intentional or ideological or what. But it means you can't trust him. He seems to have an underlying agenda that isnt in the country's interests. He was also Corbyn 's man. We forget that too quickly.

paradisecircus · 30/01/2026 08:06

I agree OP. I don't know what people who voted for him were expecting tbh.

Oh please post some more, this is one of the funniest things I have ever read on Mumsnet.

Same. Oh for the old laughter emoticon! 😂

But what can you definitely say is untrue about that post? Not much. We would be naive to assume all politicians only have a moral agenda surely?

Is that actually a serious question? Are you genuinely saying that you can't tell which statements are true and which ones are blatant fabrications or deliberate misrepresentation?

Or are you just part of the disinformation campaign and trying to suggest that things are true despite knowing that they aren't?

If you're for real, then I utterly despair for the future of our democracy.

labamba18 · 30/01/2026 08:16

I don’t hate him. But their economic policy is really hindering growth and it feels like they play to their base rather than make the best decisions for the country. My business is worse off under labour and all that has meant is I’m not hiring this year when I’d planned to.

If I had a public sector job or was on benefits I’d be relatively happy with labour, but I’m not
so that’s that!

Threads like these show just how out of touch mumsnet can be. Never mind the sheer incompetence that borders on maluce - has everyone forgotten the Lord Ali scandal for a start? The freebies, the grabbiness? Starmer is not a decent man and the 'grown-up' attempt at astroturfing, which obviously never brainwashed the wider population, is so July 2024 shill.

SumUp · 30/01/2026 08:20

We said at the election that this term would be a poisoned chalice for whoever wins.

There are some positive actions happening that will make a real difference, but the country is in a deep hole that will be a huge challenge to climb out of. The damage done by 12 years of austerity and the lack of strategic investment over decades is making the conditions challenging.

Well rather than just throwing out that wild and unhelpful comeback, why don't you go through all the points made and provide a cogent rebuttal. Then we can all judge both sides and whether any of the points are reasonable or not.

The most unpopular PM of all time. Most people can see something is not quite right with him.

It isn't my job to educate you. And I have no wish to give more "airtime" to deliberate disinformation.

ETA that I note that you didn't answer my question, so I will draw my own conclusions from that.

SumUp · 30/01/2026 08:25

One other problem (of many) is the way politicians are treated by the press, the bias, and the real and present personal danger that our politicians face as they work in their roles. A lot of decent potential MPs with valuable experience outside of politics are put off stepping into the ring.

I don’t think Starmer id evil, I feel he’s well intentioned by has a lot of expectation to live up to, but can he trust all of his fellow party members? No.

I suspected that may have been your reply.

I think your list still stands for the moment, @Sparron

To your edited point. Did you ask a meaningful question that required a response? If so please specify. Or were they just rhetorical to add to your wild comments.

It doesn’t but then you’ve repeatedly shown quite clearly that you subscribe to ridiculous conspiracy theories and wouldn’t credit Starmer if he single handedly achieved global peace, delivered a booming economy and handed every voter a gold ingot. I think we can safely discount your posts and the loads of absolute bollocks you’re defending.

These threads are a bit July 2024, most have moved on looking at polling and his ratings.
