To not get the visceral levels of hatred people have for Keir Starmer

I’m not suggesting he’s the greatest prime minister ever. I’m not even suggesting he’s good at all. But some people really, really passionately hate him.

He is a bit insipid and doesn’t have much charisma but overall he seems like a decent enough bloke who perhaps lacks the political skill and acumen he needs. He’s out of his depth basically.

But that’s not a reason to actually despise someone is it?

When did we get to a point where we can’t just disagree without painting the other person as the devil incarnate?

You sound a little excitable.

I dont know who else has the answers because for the last century we have had only two parties pinging back and forth. Time to let someone else have a go. Lets wait for the manifestos and judge then. On currently polling we will be in for something new anyway despite the "screaming".

Thatcher turned the country around. Let's hope for a similar type of leader. Or at least someone that can make a decision without u-turning 3 minutes later...

Thatcher turned the country around? If you mean started the decline, yes, I guess. It’s her actions and ideology that have caused the problems.

Adult DD. She volunteered while at uni teaching asylum seekers English. I don’t have the facility to have someone in my home, asylum seeker or not. I just have the apparently weird belief that we should treat people with humanity.

Its a shame events have shown that a lot of people coming here wouldn't give the same courtesy to anyone who may be a woman for example. Or gay. Or a non Muslim.

Ok. How does that vision fit with his apparent priorities of bringing in the Assisted suicide law, a new Islamophobia definition to be weaponised by extremists, to remove the right to a jury trial for huge numbers of people and to give away the Chagos islands against the wishes of the Chagossians and to the damage of the environment and costing us £34 billion? I’m not sure those were in the manifesto? Not to mention refusing to follow the law on women’s rights.

We’re not after ‘sexy’, sane would do.

The assisted dying law was passed by parliament and we live in a democracy. I'm glad the Lords are scrutinising it and will demands checks and balance. The Islamophobia definition is scrapped in law. Jury trials in certain cases are an enormous waste of court time and resources. The Chagos islands debacle was a mistake and I think even Labour recognise that but it's literally NOTHING in the face of what Britain is facing, outside of right wing podcasts.

Are you aware of the state of the country during the 70s when the unions held us to ransom? My mum still remembers the terrible shortages of basics, the undertakers strike, bun end strikes, water shortages, 3 day working weeks. We were in a terrible state.

I mean she did lead to the rise of the middle class and the "modern day prole" I suppose. Better keep those chavs in their place? Is that what you mean? Labour seem to mean that anyway. Keep them down on benefits to have a Labour voting base.

A lot? Are you sure?
How many asylum seekers have you met? I’ve taught their children and been involved with charities that have meant I’ve met quite a few.

Selling all the country’s assets. Embedding the idea that a country’s budget is like a household’s. Just for starters.

Thatcher destroyed our industrial base and sold all out assets to her mates.

No PM is perfect. But she crushed inflation and growth returned. John Major's fiscal discipline is what caused the economic boom of 1997-2007 (which the Blair government just inherited).

Well, I live very close to an area with many refugees. I just don’t demonise them. You’re making huge assumptions about the volunteering and our general lives there because someone meeting actual asylum seekers and it being ok makes you uncomfortable.

Oh well then...

I dont know if you have heard of the Rotherham Pakistani rape gangs which targeted non Muslim poor white girls? Apparently it's reflected throughout the UK. And Afghan young men coming in to the UK are from a sexually repressed country that treats women less than animals. Its hardly surprising they let rip here. They havent been raised not to or been to school here to be taught otherwise. Its their culture. Thats why we are so desperately sorry for Afghan women remember!

Also there have been rather a lot of attacks by asylum seekers in the news. People that shouldn't have been here. So crimes that should have been prevented from happening if the borders worked. Not much humanity being shown by these perpetrators. Its become fairly regular and almost normalised now so perhaps you haven't noticed.

Globalisation destroyed our manufacturing base. For example ship building went from Newcastle to China and Korea and can never come back.

Notalotanota2026 · 31/01/2026 12:34

It's only the thick, simple ones (blindly following the other sheep) that have this mad hatred.

It honestly baffles me how simplistic peoples' minds are. And how easy it is to convince someone, with no facts, just pure hatred, that this is how you should think.

The sheep are multiply by the dozen!

Notalotanota2026 · 31/01/2026 12:35

UK manufacturing was already naturally shrinking due to general economic and global conditions.

Not all privatisations worked out but BA and BT definitely got better. Even so, you don't like BA you can fly with someone else.

This is really unconvincing but I guess if it’s how Labour want to deal with their bad polling and ratings.

I take it you’ve had no visibility of the total abuse of process to ram the AS law through and despite the HoL coming back with huge numbers of amendments because it is so badly written, supporters are now threatening to use an obscure old law to bully it through? Not remotely democratic. Try listening to how Baroness Tanni Grey-Thompson has been treated.
The Islamophobia definition is being brought in by the back door because he promised the Muslims and thinks it secures their vote. The Labour Party itself has already adopted the contentious definition.
The right to a trial by jury is enshrined in our democracy and the removal of that right for many is an horrendous abuse of power. Analysts have said that it will not help with the court backlog as it is inefficiency and disorganisation that is the main issue.

I don’t think giving up our territory against the wishes of the islanders (what was that about the right to self determination KS is so keen on fir the Greenlanders - not so much the Chagossians) and the subsequent harm to the environment and cost of £34 billion to use (remember that disastrous £20 bn black hole RR was so concerned about?) is ‘nothing’.

What are your priorities though?

Someone from Crowborough was telling me how the "asylum seekers" that recently moved in deliver drug parcels and hiss and leer at his wife and young daughter.

It's stupidity to continue to allow them here.

They’ve been there a week. I very much doubt this is the case
Anyway, I’m sick of every single thread becoming about asylum seekers. It’s not the topic of this one and yet again it’s been twisted around by the Farage fan girls. I’m out.

Yes I was. No she didn’t. She broke the stranglehold of the unions that had our country on its knees. I don’t think anyone can realistically argue that she didn’t leave the economy in a far better state than when she started.

Privatising industry to drive efficiency and investment as per her manifesto is not ‘selling things off to her mates’.

terrible shortages of basics

There were very short term sugar shortages and IIRC bread shortages.

water shortages

Due to a very unusual heatwave!

bun end strikes

?
3 day working weeks

For two months.

Somersetbaker · 31/01/2026 12:50

I think the hatred is due to the fact that he's a decent person, not a thick as mince, bone idle, serial adulterer with a bad haircut, and he's never claimed that his parents, while sending him to an expensive private school, were too hard up to have Sky, or had a wife non-domiciled for tax-purposes.

Happyher · 31/01/2026 12:54

I think it’s because he’s a serious intelligent hardworking person who’s not bothered about fame and being liked People have got used to politics being a reality TV game show thanks to the last set of PMs hence the clamouring for Burnham recently. Plus there are elites in this country who will do everything possible to destroy any Labour government.
