To not get the visceral levels of hatred people have for Keir Starmer

LastChristmasigaveyousomesocks · 29/01/2026 19:58

I’m not suggesting he’s the greatest prime minister ever. I’m not even suggesting he’s good at all. But some people really, really passionately hate him.

He is a bit insipid and doesn’t have much charisma but overall he seems like a decent enough bloke who perhaps lacks the political skill and acumen he needs. He’s out of his depth basically.

But that’s not a reason to actually despise someone is it?

When did we get to a point where we can’t just disagree without painting the other person as the devil incarnate?

casting aside law and democratic process willy nilly

Have they attempted to prorogue parliament yet?

dottiehens · 31/01/2026 10:32

Are you joking? He does not get half of the hate conservatives, Trump, Farage and others get. However, I guess because he is a left wing politician you think he should get a free pass maybe? 🤔

No. Just that there's demographic change.

Exactly. Demographic change is natural and inevitable. There is no conspiracy.

Oh who cares about proroguing parliament. It made absolutely no difference whatsoever and was the proverbial storm in a teacup and the rights and wrongs of it are debatable notwithstanding spider lady's biased judgement. All the MPs disgraced themselves. We really have the rule of lawyers. Which is NOT a good thing. And I am one.

I include Chagos in this shit sandwich.

Pineneedlesincarpet · 31/01/2026 10:30

Of course I havent bothered. Because you're talking rubbish if you say that MN is worried about Jewish demographic change. Who cares. Its clearly irrelevant today.

If however you said the Great Replacement Theory was islamaphobic (whatever that is) then you may be listened to. Because that is a debatable question that is relevant today.

Well it is a good thing I didn't say any of that, isn't it?

I said the Great Replacement Theory, which is touted by some on MN, is rooted in anti-semitism. Which it is.

Trying to misrepresent what I said in the way you have speaks volumes about you.

Just to make things clear, eta this from the American Jewish Committee link:

"Great Replacement, also known as white replacement theory or white genocide theory, claims there is an intentional effort, led by Jews, to promote mass non-white immigration, inter-racial marriage, and other efforts that would lead to the “extinction of whites.”

Wouldn't say it's good or beneficial. But it's there.

He seems like a basically decent, honourable man. He is being character assassinated at every turn by the right wing media, most of which is available free or very cheaply - a deliberate stratrgy by the owners to sow a narrative that Labour is failing. I got a cheap subscription to the Daily Telegraph and the comments section is truly eye opening in the worst possible way. The utter stupidity and naked hatred on proud display is frankly depressing. Critical thinking is entirely absent. They want a British Trump, stupidly falling into the same old trap as many Americans- 'Leopards won't eat MY face!'

iloveecats · 31/01/2026 10:38

‘In times when our PM thinks that 1% of women have a penis’

God just reading through all these posts. And this sentence although of course we’re all well aware of Starmer’s illogical thinking, made me laugh (a bitter wry laugh obviously). Because what. The. Actual. Fck.

Can you imagine a PM (or anyone) saying this before a few years ago.

Margaret thatcher thinks some women have a penis!!! She thinks women with penises exist!! Yes she said that. Omg she’s going mad!! *

Etc. It’s really truly remarkable that the person elected to run the uk, doesn’t ’believe in’ scientific fact. More remarkable is that many people don’t find this to be an issue wrt his mental stability.

*Not really. MT didn’t say that. That would’ve been bonkers wouldn’t it.

I will have to bow to your knowledge that its rooted in anti semetism (sic)

It is not "my knowledge", it is a known fact.

https://www.ajc.org/translatehate/great-replacement

You being seemingly unaware of this bolsters pps point about people blindly lapping up and regurgitating disinformation and conspiracy theories.

That’s sounding rather tenuous in relation to the current issues in the UK. Slapping a label on a ‘theory’ doesn’t make it exactly the thing that may have been thought about years ago in another country. It’s not Jews that are predicted to outnumber us by far higher birthrate and immigration in 30-50 years.

They did a political manoeuvre, they argued it in the UKSC, lost and respected the ruling.

Then Boris called a GE, smashed it and got Brexit done.

"Great Replacement, also known as white replacement theory or white genocide theory, claims there is an intentional effort, led by Jews, to promote mass non-white immigration, inter-racial marriage, and other efforts that would lead to the “extinction of whites.”

"This conspiracy theory was famously promoted at the 2017 “Unite the Right” rally in Charlottesville, VA, when white supremacists chanted, “Jews will not replace us.” Right wing commentators have invoked the Great Replacement theory to say Democrats are “replacing” American citizens with illegal immigrants. Belief in the Great Replacement theory has been cited as motivation for recent terror attacks, including the 2018 Pittsburgh, PA, synagogue shooting at the Tree of Life, the 2019 El Paso, TX, and Christchurch, New Zealand, shootings, and the 2022 shooting in Buffalo, NY. Longtime civil rights strategist Eric Ward says of the Buffalo shooting, “It is important for us to understand that African Americans were killed because they were Black, but the motivating story that drove the killer was an idea that he was at war with the Jewish community.”

From the American Jewish Committee link I posted earlier.

At least Germany is saying the unsayable. At least some are finally acknowledging what is happening. It ain’t Jewish.

‘The Germany-wide statistics on sexual violence were also sobering. An internal study by the German federal law enforcement agency, leaked to a Zurich newspaper, revealed that asylum-seekers have committed some 7,000 sexual assaults (ranging from groping to gang-rape ) between 2015 and 2023. Although they make up only 2.5 per cent of the population, asylum-seekers made up 13.1 per cent of all sexual-assault suspects in 2021.

In 2023, there were 761 gang-rapes registered in Germany — almost two per day; 47.5 per cent of the suspects were foreigners. The frequency of such crimes — which were rare in Germany as late as the 1990s — has hovered between 600 and 800 per year for the past 7 years.

The statistics go on for page after mind-numbing (or mind-boggling) page. Berlin’s police chief delivered the upshot: “Bluntly stated, our numbers show that violence in Berlin is young, male, and has a non-German background.”

Apparently not yet but cancelling elections, shutting down free speech, writing new blasphemy laws, ignoring the Equality Act and the Supreme Court judgement and literally bullying and lying a dangerous bill through Parliament is not very respectful of democracy.

Are you implying that because the last government attempted to prorogue Parliament, it’s fine for this government to do all of the above? I’d rather live in an actual democracy.

That is alarming when you sum it up like that @BundleBoogie

Labour have been : ‘cancelling elections, shutting down free speech, writing new blasphemy laws, ignoring the Equality Act and the Supreme Court judgement’

It doesn’t sound like the uk does it.

It means he needs to communicate his vision better. Honestly, the lack of critical thinking on display there alarms me - and yes it's the Telegraph, I know. But it sums up a deeper problem which is people want fantasy politics. Solving huge global and domestic problems is hard. Intelligent people can recognise this while simultaneously being frustrated at the pace of necessary change.

People who feel desperate can't cope with this grim reality. They want to be promised unicorns and sunlight. They want political leaders to take the place of religious leaders and give them hope. It's bullshit. Governance isn't about razzle dazzle (Boris you wanker) or caving in to the loony fringe (Cameron you wanker). Starmer needs to bring his loonies into line or expel them then keep doing the job he has started.

I don’t think so. The policies are impacting many people negatively. They’re alienating large groups of people including those who voted for them in 2024.

Britain is living beyond its means and productivity is poor. That's the reality. We cannot afford to pay endless money towards benefits for vast chunks of the population, especially the growing number who feel entitled to live on everyone else's contribution. We also need to get real with preserving life at any cost for eighty eight year olds with advanced dementia and fast track illegal immigrants out of the country. Grasping those 3 nettles would make a very rapid improvement in general living standards for the population.

Yes. It’s a scandal and it’s in the UK too. Probably other welcoming European countries. No one’s acknowledging it. Women and girls really are the bottom of the barrel, where the government is concerned.

There has been some data published in the uk, which is similar to this German data. But only from foi requests - even then the way data is recorded is patchy, apparently . For obvious reasons.

Note none of this is happening in Poland.

I do find it grimly amusing that many of those cheering on Reform are a) on benefits which Reform will remove from them in a blink or b) white van man types who think they'll be richer when in reality they will end up paying a lot more tax. And don't get me started on the Greens who are living in lala land where everyone gets a free house painted like a Pride flag and zey / zem are entitled to it. Fucking idiots 🙄

Well something has to change. Because youve dismissed all the main alternatives to to the two main parties. And the two main parties have hardly covered themselves in glory.
