DH’s penguin obsession

BettyWhittaker · 18/01/2026 17:39

DH is obsessed with penguins (the biscuits, not the birds) and always has been. He says every British household has a packet of penguins in - just as his grandparents did 30 years ago.
He’s particularly excited at the minute as they’re on offer in Asda for £1 a pack. He came in the other day with 3 packets, all different players - acting like he’d just closed in on the deal of the century.

Anyway, I know it sounds petty but it’s winding me up. Every evening around 8pm he stands up and says “penguin?” No I don’t want a fucking penguin, I never do and I’ve told him to stop asking me. Yes it sounds like a small thing but this is years of frustration. This morning his mother came around whilst he was out and once I made a coffee she said “no penguins in?” Ffs and they act like I’m the weird one!!!

Anyway next week we’re having a little party for DGD and DH wants a plate of penguins all arranged on a plate for the buffet. I think this is tacky as hell. He thinks I’m being a snob.

AIBU???

Bonus points for anyone who can tell me if every British household does indeed have at least one packet of penguins in.

YANBU, Penguins are shite 😂

pinkblueyelloworange · 18/01/2026 18:18

Wow I’d get on very well with him. I’m obsessed with penguin bars. My husband has a calippo every night, always asks me, I always say no. But polite to ask?

gingercat02 · 18/01/2026 18:19

I don't think I have ever bought Penguins as an adult (I'm nearly 57) but we often had them as kids.

DopeyS · 18/01/2026 18:19

As someone else said I have Timtams. I had one today as was struggling to find them. They are the gluten free ones. Penguins don't offer a gluten free one. I always thought of them as a lunch box biscuit rather than a treat. If I was treating myself I would never have reached for one.

Chinsupmeloves · 18/01/2026 18:19

This is hilarious 😂 They are more expensive than supermarket own brands so no wonder he was so excited. They are clearly a nostalgic amd meaningful item to him, ott agreed, but I find it funny.

sprigatito · 18/01/2026 18:21

Why shouldn’t your DGD’s party menu reflect his tastes as well as yours? Unclench a little, you’ll be happier! Thank goodness for small things that make us happy. For your DH it’s Penguins, for me it’s bath bombs and sparkly nail varnish (also regarded as tacky by MN, but ultimately harmless).

Alltheyellowbirds · 18/01/2026 18:21

Haha, this is hilarious.

No I don’t have a packet of penguins. I don’t actually think I’ve eaten one since the eighties.

But it’s nice they make him so happy. Small pleasures etc?

Bruisername · 18/01/2026 18:21

So I bought TimTams yesterday to see what the fuss was about and I honestly felt they were just an inferior penguin and no joke to boot!

I have very fond memories of penguin bars but sadly they have changed the recipe and they’re just not the same

MNLurker1345 · 18/01/2026 18:21

I am disappointed, I anticipated a story of a weird husband watching the March of the Penguins every night.

I haven’t had a chocolate penguin for decades but we did always have them growing up.

I am going to buy some for the DGC. OP you may have just started a trend.

I do offer my sympathies though, it would drive
me mad!

Jugendstiel · 18/01/2026 18:22

Haven't had - or wanted - a penguin since school packed lunches in 1970s. Didn't like them then, either. Clubs though...

BackOfTheMum5net · 18/01/2026 18:23

I’d love it if someone offered me a chocolate biscuit at 8pm every day!

SnoopyPajamas · 18/01/2026 18:23

Haven't they changed the recipe to a manky fake chocolate coating, OP? The love affair may be about to die 😂

Alltheyellowbirds · 18/01/2026 18:24

Ramblingaway · 18/01/2026 17:53

They've changed their recipe and can no longer be called a chocolate biscuit as they don't use enough cocoa! Therefore they're banned from our house!

Ugh. Why do they spoil all the things.

OnePeachExpert · 18/01/2026 18:24

I laughed out loud more than once reading the OP 🤣

HighStreetOtter · 18/01/2026 18:25

They taste awful these days. I fancy a kitkat now, hazelnut one.

OttersMayHaveShifted · 18/01/2026 18:25

YANBU. Penguins are shit. The coating doesn't even qualify as chocolate any more - it's 'chocolate-flavoured'. I don't think I've had a penguin for decades tbh. Put it this way - when I rage about being gluten-intolerant, it's not penguins I'm missing!

LilyCanna · 18/01/2026 18:26

Inawhylcroc · 18/01/2026 17:48

Hahah I found this hilarious but equally I can see how annoying it could get. While we are all allowed to have our quirks this is a bit much :

Anyway, I know it sounds petty but it’s winding me up. Every evening around 8pm he stands up and says “penguin?” No I don’t want a fucking penguin, I never do and I’ve told him to stop asking me. Yes it sounds like a small thing but this is years of frustration

Assuming Op has seriously communicated she doesn’t find this amusing and doesn’t want to be offered one, he needs to stop doing it.

HIBU for doing this (and for not realising that there are other superior chocolate snacks like Club biscuits)
YABU for saying Penguins are tacky.

ginasevern · 18/01/2026 18:26

"Every evening around 8pm he stands up and says “penguin?”

This properly made me chuckle.

Alwaysdancinginthemoonlight · 18/01/2026 18:26

I only have penguins in my house when they are on offer at whichever supermarket we've been to!! It's usually a rotation between penguins, KitKat's, clubs and Rocky's tbf!!!!

RottenBanana · 18/01/2026 18:26

Start calling them Pengwings...

BunnyLake · 18/01/2026 18:27

I’d probably find them a bit sweet nowadays but they figured heavily in my childhood. I wouldn’t turn one down though, lovely to dunk.

Are TimTams sold here?

MummyWillow1 · 18/01/2026 18:27

There’s worse things to be obsessed with 🤷‍♀️

ThatCyanCat · 18/01/2026 18:27

I really, really wanted this to be about the birds. I love penguins.

We don't have the biscuits in our house ever. I like them fine but haven't really thought about them for years.

Purlant · 18/01/2026 18:28

Don’t think I’ve had one since the early 90s. My parents still get them occasionally.

Im probably a bit of a snob, but I love the thought of a plate of penguins for a child’s party!

RoamingToaster · 18/01/2026 18:28

I was hoping this was about the birds 😂
