DH’s penguin obsession

BettyWhittaker · 18/01/2026 17:39

DH is obsessed with penguins (the biscuits, not the birds) and always has been. He says every British household has a packet of penguins in - just as his grandparents did 30 years ago.
He’s particularly excited at the minute as they’re on offer in Asda for £1 a pack. He came in the other day with 3 packets, all different players - acting like he’d just closed in on the deal of the century.

Anyway, I know it sounds petty but it’s winding me up. Every evening around 8pm he stands up and says “penguin?” No I don’t want a fucking penguin, I never do and I’ve told him to stop asking me. Yes it sounds like a small thing but this is years of frustration. This morning his mother came around whilst he was out and once I made a coffee she said “no penguins in?” Ffs and they act like I’m the weird one!!!

Anyway next week we’re having a little party for DGD and DH wants a plate of penguins all arranged on a plate for the buffet. I think this is tacky as hell. He thinks I’m being a snob.

AIBU???

Bonus points for anyone who can tell me if every British household does indeed have at least one packet of penguins in.

They’re called Tim Tams here in Australia. And they come in a packet, like biscuits.

RosyPumpkins · 19/01/2026 04:33

I was expecting this to be much more worrying and was preparing to sympathise with OP if her DH spent every weekend in the zoo.
Penguins in the biscuit sense are delicious but I’d probably start poisoning them if my DH talked about them that much.

KHMum123 · 19/01/2026 05:15

I see alot of depressing stuff on this site and this post has really made me laugh 😂 I can also imagine you getting really annoyed which tickles me more. Let the man enjoy his penguins 🐧

Sounds sweet tbh
You'd be more pissed off if it was Ferraro Rodgers, it would cost a bomb.

Ferraro Rodgers has been making me giggle for hours!

I haven’t eaten a Penguin since the 1970s. Club biscuits were always better anyway

Most definitely. Mint and orange flavours.

Love McVities, but not a fan of penguins (nor Wagon Wheels for that matter).

Mumtobabyhavoc · 19/01/2026 05:57

The bizarre part is the husband and MiL asking for biscuits as if they're in a tv commercial:

Fancy a Penguin?
What, no penguins?

The expectation is utterly weird. It's as if no other biscuits exist. It's not even calling the biscuits by name as if it were a novelty:
Fancy a Penguin?
Oh! Did you buy biscuits? Sure, I'll have one.

It's the same biscuit every time.

The only option for OP is LTB.

ThisIsMyBurnerPhone · 19/01/2026 06:03

This thread has given me a huge craving for an Orange Club biscuit. Haven’t had one since school packed lunches but all the biscuit talk rekindled dormant but good memories. Never cared much for the mint ones. I won’t mention the P word to spare OP further injury.

CheddarCheeseAndCrispSandwich · 19/01/2026 06:03

Nothing inherently wrong with liking penguins…but this level of obsession is just bloody weird!! I would hate this…any kind of obsession (over anything!) would drive me crazy. I couldn’t live with your DH 🤷‍♀️🤯

timeserved · 19/01/2026 06:08

Not bothered about penguins, the thing is I like a lotta chocolate on my biscuits.

TheBlueKoala · 19/01/2026 06:09

BettyWhittaker · 18/01/2026 19:23

Maybe I’m a bit bitter - as a kid I always had a penguin in my packed lunch box but my friend had gold bars. I always thought her family must be loaded 😂

Not British so I have no idea what Penguins are but I would guess chocolate biscuits? What's tacky about them?

Honestly if this is all you got to complain about concerning your DH I would count my blessings @BettyWhittaker . But I understand that it can get annoying. Why don't you try buying Penguins yourself- many of them so that he thinks that you are on his team re the Penguins. Maybe then he will stop talking about them?

AlexaAdventuress · 19/01/2026 06:31

Many years ago I found a Club biscuit that was solid chocolate and didn't have any biscuit inside at all. Something must have gone wrong in the factory. I've eaten a great many since in the hope of finding another one, but so far been unlucky.

MyDeftDuck · 19/01/2026 06:36

🤮🤮🤮 No thanks! No penguins here! Used to have them occasionally years ago but when they reduced the size during manufacture - shrinkflation tactics - and made subtle changes to the ingredients I stopped wasting money on them! And they’re not even coated in proper chocolate! They are covered in chocolate flavoured coating!
OP’s DH sounds like a nightmare!

I don't believe every household has a packet of penguins in.

Have you ever tried biting both the ends off and drinking a hot drink through it. Could that open your mind to enjoying an 8pm penguin once in a while?

I’ve only ever done that with chocolate fingers….

xSideshowAuntSallyXx · 19/01/2026 06:59

I'm impressed he managed to find different flavours as my Sainsbury's only ever have the chocolate ones, never mint or orange.

I used to love getting the mixed packs.

IpsyUpsyDaisyDoos · 19/01/2026 07:09

I don't mind a penguin, but no, no penguins in this house. Just wanted to add this so you have extra numbers on the no penguins. Funny as it might be to externals, I can imagine this is grating when it's constant!

DrDisrespect · 19/01/2026 07:15

Ive eaten plenty but tbh dont think ive ever bought any, and im 38

LittleMissyHappyMe · 19/01/2026 07:22

Guilty!! Only got 2 left though.
No kitkats so now I’m sad…

If you had one now, you'd probably be disappointed. They changed the recipe/construction somehow - I can't remember the details (thinner chocolate on top?) but know I actually wrote to complain about it. I loved the old orange ones but haven't bought one since then.

PinkyFlamingo · 19/01/2026 07:37

How on earth can a plate of biscuits be tacky?

tilypu · 19/01/2026 07:42

I rarely have chocolate biscuits in the house, and when I do they are never penguins. It's one of the worst ones imo.

Your husband (and his family) are definitely the weird ones.

Didshejustsaythatoutloud · 19/01/2026 08:13

Nope, but I might p p p p p pick up a pack today 😂

Cyclistmumgrandma · 19/01/2026 08:23

On holiday last year, penguins as far as the eye could see…..

Your husband sounds adorable. When I was a child we rarely had sweets treats in but Penguin bars were such a treat and probably my fave. I feel a bit envious of you being asked if you'd like a Penguin every night! 😂 I say go with the Penguin platter! ❤️
