DH’s penguin obsession

BettyWhittaker · 18/01/2026 17:39

DH is obsessed with penguins (the biscuits, not the birds) and always has been. He says every British household has a packet of penguins in - just as his grandparents did 30 years ago.
He’s particularly excited at the minute as they’re on offer in Asda for £1 a pack. He came in the other day with 3 packets, all different players - acting like he’d just closed in on the deal of the century.

Anyway, I know it sounds petty but it’s winding me up. Every evening around 8pm he stands up and says “penguin?” No I don’t want a fucking penguin, I never do and I’ve told him to stop asking me. Yes it sounds like a small thing but this is years of frustration. This morning his mother came around whilst he was out and once I made a coffee she said “no penguins in?” Ffs and they act like I’m the weird one!!!

Anyway next week we’re having a little party for DGD and DH wants a plate of penguins all arranged on a plate for the buffet. I think this is tacky as hell. He thinks I’m being a snob.

AIBU???

Bonus points for anyone who can tell me if every British household does indeed have at least one packet of penguins in.

Haven't had a penguin in decades.

I never liked them, even as a little fat kid who would eat most things. I didn't like the texture.

HumerousHumous · 18/01/2026 19:44

I think you’re being a bit p-p-p-p-p—ppppppp-petty 🐧

diddl · 18/01/2026 19:45

Where can you buy Tim Tams?

ArtesianWater · 18/01/2026 19:45

Gosh this made me laugh OP. I haven't eaten a penguin since I was a kid and never bought them, so there goes the 'every household' theory. And I voted YANBU. It's obviously a harmless quirk of his but golly it would drive me mad too.

OuchAndAbout · 18/01/2026 19:46

I miss penguins. Stupid coeliacs disease.

Nothing winds me up more though than a man stoically saying the same thing to me day in day out when I've already told him that I don't like it.

Glasskey · 18/01/2026 19:46

Currently have 3 packets in the fridge as we're on special offer and dh takes one to work everyday. The only bar that comes with a joke.
I'd be fed up if I had to put up with the 8pm penguin everyday OP! Open a kit-, put the 2 sticks in a certain position and when he asks stick them in a certain gesture and say no, kit-kat? Works equally well with Twix I should think.

Horses7 · 18/01/2026 19:46

Sorry you’re being a bit p p p petty but it has given me a much needed chuckle tonight. Try and tempt him away from the penguins with a Club Orange - infinitely superior!

Meezer2 · 18/01/2026 19:48

It’s nearly 8 o’clock.
please feed back if you get offered a penguin.

Blueskiesandrainbows · 18/01/2026 19:49

Oh I think it’s great, leave him alone and let him have his penguin moment, he could be doing far worse.
With me it’s Kit Kat I eat one almost every day and like to keep a stash.
A harmless bit of fun, I really like him already!

simpleoldpimple · 18/01/2026 19:52

‘No I don’t want a fucking penguin’

You are amazing OP. Sorry, I understand it’s annoying, but if this is all you have to moan about, I salute you!

I am all for party penguin plates! But haven’t had any in the house for at least a decade because I’m not 5 (although they are lush!)

PaddingtonsMarmaladeSandwich · 18/01/2026 19:52

I voted YABU but I don’t have any penguins in at the moment

Perplexin · 18/01/2026 19:53

No penguins in my house, we prefer to just have bourbon biscuits (penguins are just bourbons with a layer of chocolate...)

pigsDOfly · 18/01/2026 19:53

Just want to get in before the 8 o'clock deadline. No penguins in this household, and like pps I haven't had one for years and years.

Always found them a bit disappointing tbh.

The penguin birds however, I'd love to have some of those in my house.

Taxi bars - gosh forgot bout them !

Taxis upgrades over the years - from fake chocolate to real chocolate coating. My favourite old school wrapped biscuit is an orange Club. They have them at blood donor sessions and I treat myself to one.

My mum always bought the mint ones which I could never understand as the orange are far more superior !

MsJinks · 18/01/2026 19:56

Aww I thought it was that you had to go sea life centres weekly and go far afield each year to see penguins in remote places. I would have said everyone likes a pppp penguin then.
Can’t recall buying them, expect maybe when kids were younger (aeons ago) but not as a regular thing at all - they got rotated as per offers/shop used. My parents very occasionally got a pack, but more commonly club biscuits and my kids (with families) just now and again. I’m not sure which age range is the generation that always has them in but I’ve not known of it between would be now 93 and now 30

I sometimes find it grating when couples have their own little sayings together, or one says and the other laughs, but tell myself it’s actually a nice thing - can’t bring myself to say so here about your husband - I’d be tempted to stab him with a penguin shaped knife - maybe just threaten to start with, if you quite like him otherwise though.

NoAttorneysToPleadMyCase · 18/01/2026 19:56

Fun fact, a bourbon biscuit is a bald penguin! (Yes I have melted one in the microwave to check it was real)

LBFseBrom · 18/01/2026 19:56

It's very funny and rather sweet.

Penguins are lovely biscuits, I always liked them.

I'm coming round to yours for a cup of coffee and a penguin.

WhisperingAngelisnotbad · 18/01/2026 19:58

We don't. Have any penguins, that is.

I hate mint and chocolate together. Also hate dark chocolate.

Ferro · 18/01/2026 19:28

They are common, to be fair. If I saw a plate of Penguins I’d assume I was among people who blow on their tea and watch commercial television.

@WhisperingAngelisnotbad, love your post name!

My snobby DH would disagree! Moi, agree with you.

snoopyfanaccountant · 18/01/2026 20:02

I don't think I have bought Penguins since I worked for McVities as a temp in 1992 and I could buy bags of rejects in the factory shop.

Suusue · 18/01/2026 20:02

Omg talk about an ick!!!!! They are not even classified as chocolate biscuits anymore as there is so little real chocolate in them. A grown man carrying on like this tho.......
