Angry woman on plane, Was we BU?

7 hour flight with DH and DS(4). As soon as seatbelt lights went off DH fully reclined exhausted DSs seat so he could sleep. The woman behind snapped at DH to put the seat back up as drinks would be coming around soon. DH said no as drinks currently not being served. She called him a selfish twat to her OH.
Drinks/snacks start coming around. Woman tells DH to put the seat back up. DH put the seat back up half way so to not wake DS. She tells him to put it fully up. He tells her DS is sleeping. Her OH then tells her to speak to steward which she does. Steward asks DH to put the seat back up - he tells her DS is sleeping. I tell him to just put it back up, he again says DS is sleeping. Air Steward starts getting pissed off, I snap at DH to put the bloody seat up. He does so reluctantly and DS does not wake.

Once everything is cleared away he puts the seat fully back again. The woman complains that he’s doing that out of badness because “the kid” is still asleep. Her OH confirms that yes, DH is a twat.

My take on it is that both were being unreasonable at different times. My sister however says this was all on DH.

See I think she was being unreasonable at the start as food / drinks were not being served. DH then became the unreasonable one? But then after everything had been cleared, she again became unreasonable?

She ended up swapping seats with her OH in the end as I think even he was getting fed up of her complaining.

But I do agree DH was being pig headed and he was annoying me too.

I think the telling thing here is that DS was still asleep after the seat had been adjusted to fully upright. Where was the need to recline it again ?

But daddy was worried the fruit of his loins might wake up with a stiff neck.

MyBrightPeer · 08/01/2026 18:20

Don’t think a four year old needs to recline - hardly need the leg room do they? Your DH was a prick.

MadamCholetsbonnet · 08/01/2026 17:36

Your DH is an annoying tosser.

Exactly. That woman and the steward only had to put up with him on the flight. The OP has the misfortune to be married to him.

PS5Gamer · 08/01/2026 18:21

Your H sounds like a self entitled Twat!

DustlandFairytaleBeginning · 08/01/2026 18:21

Seats should only be reclined when the cabin lights are dimmed for sleep honestly. I think it's pretty antisocial to do it any other time, you know it ruins the person behind you from using their table properly. Kids sleep sitting up in the car all the time, they won't care.

I once spent a flight like this with a nearly two year old on my lap and a person in front who reclined the whole journey as a point of principle, unless forced to put it up by the air hostess. My kid kept banging their head off the seat.

WhereYouLeftIt · 08/01/2026 18:22

So, a 7-hour flight that set off in early morning - and "as soon as seatbelt lights went off DH fully reclined exhausted DSs seat so he could sleep".

Your husband could have had your son sleeping with his head in husband's lap and son's legs in your lap. But no, your husband decided that his comfort was more important than the comfort of the lady sitting behind.

Your husband was selfish from the off, rude to the woman, risked getting turfed off the plane by arguing with the Cabin Crew, and turned into a truculent teenager by insisting on re-reclining the seat after eating. He's a twat.

"See I think she was being unreasonable at the start as food / drinks were not being served."
Put yourself in her shoes. It's early morning, she's got a 7-hour flight looming in front of her, and as soon as the flight has started the seat in front is reclined into her face - and she's got SEVEN HOURS of this shit to look forward to. She was NOT being unreasonable.

"My sister however says this was all on DH."
Your sister is correct.

you paid for your child’s seat, they are entitled to sleep comfortably. The couple were arseholes, if they were uncomfortable they need to use a different airline with better spaced out seats .

Oh come on, he's definitely unreasonable at least 3 people told him to put it back up!

RessicaJabbit · 08/01/2026 18:23

HeddaGarbled · 08/01/2026 17:39

If someone reclined their seat into my space at the very beginning of a 7 hour flight, I’d cry.

I just push them back 😂

sellotapechicken · 08/01/2026 18:24

Your husband sounds like a twat

Pinkbluegreeb · 08/01/2026 18:24

I dont see anything wrong with reclining and I recline on flights in the day and night. However, he should of waited until after the meal/drinks service was done and he was rude to not listen to the air hostess.

StephensLass1977 · 08/01/2026 18:25

I hate seats being reclined into my lap, and always seem to end up with the people who do this for the entire flight - but I have not and will never ask someone not to. Unfortunately if they are able to recline, people are entitled to do so. Apart from meal times.

Berlinlover · 08/01/2026 18:25

JellyBeanz77 · 08/01/2026 17:56

Didn’t even read the post… straight on to comment on the awful grammar in the title… unbelievable…

I agree.

Itsgoingtobeagloriousday · 08/01/2026 18:25

Nothing worse than being sat behind a recliner (unless it’s after food service on a night flight!). I had exactly the same this year on a 7 hour day flight. Woman in front reclined fully the second the seatbelt sign went off, for the entire flight!

The problem is, the recliner gets a minimal amount of extra comfort but the person behind’s comfort levels are made 50 times worse. Makes it so claustrophobic, with the screen practically touching your face. Most people realise this so don’t do it but there’s always a few that don’t care. I would rather there were no reclining seats in economy tbh, even long haul.

SerafinasGoose · 08/01/2026 18:25

PerpetualBurnout · 08/01/2026 17:30

I’ve never been on a flight but I’m wondering why do they have reclining seats if it’s not acceptable to recline them ??

This was a 7-hour flight. It's safe to assume some flights on that route will be night flights.

It's well-accepted that people will recline their seats for sleeping. When others are eating and drinking it is simply rude.

Florencesndzebedee · 08/01/2026 18:25

A 7 hour flight with a seat mostly reclined for the duration really is totally selfish. I’d have been pissed off too.

WalkDontWalk · 08/01/2026 18:25

You call someone a twat, they’re very unlikely to do as you ask.

The woman handled it badly, and your husband reacted…yeah, unreasonably, but understandably.

Dollymylove · 08/01/2026 18:26

I get that seat should be upright when drinks/food is being served but at other times what is the point of having reclining seats if you cant recline them.?

ToKittyornottoKitty · 08/01/2026 18:26

pottymouth40 · 08/01/2026 18:13

Calling someone a twat for not adjusting his sleeping child’s chair - which he is perfectly entitled to keep reclined until meal time - is not calling a spade a spade. It’s being a nasty, entitled twat which is rather ironic.

Imagine going through life thinking you can rudely order someone to do as you say and then call them names when they quite understandably don’t do it?

I don’t even know if this is real bc I can’t believe people are this entitled in RL.

It doesn’t mean this isn’t real, it probably just means you are of the same entitled mind as her DH. Entitled people aren’t a rarity.

Your sister is correct.

She was being unreasonable though, we all know the seats recline and people are allowed to do it.
Yes it should be up in meal service but apart from that its luck of the draw and tough shit if someone does want to recline.

Luckyingame · 08/01/2026 18:27

Yes, "you was BU".

AttackCat · 08/01/2026 18:27

I'm generally on Team Recline but a 4 year old doesn't really need a reclined seat.

Hellohelga · 08/01/2026 18:27

The seats recline for a reason. Why should you not recline them? I think it’s ok as long as food not being served.

BlackCat14 · 08/01/2026 18:28

Was your son sat on the same chair as your husband? I don’t really understand the whole thing about your son being asleep.

suburberphobe · 08/01/2026 18:28

I’ve never been on a flight

Then you don't know the problem, eh?
