Angry woman on plane, Was we BU?

7 hour flight with DH and DS(4). As soon as seatbelt lights went off DH fully reclined exhausted DSs seat so he could sleep. The woman behind snapped at DH to put the seat back up as drinks would be coming around soon. DH said no as drinks currently not being served. She called him a selfish twat to her OH.
Drinks/snacks start coming around. Woman tells DH to put the seat back up. DH put the seat back up half way so to not wake DS. She tells him to put it fully up. He tells her DS is sleeping. Her OH then tells her to speak to steward which she does. Steward asks DH to put the seat back up - he tells her DS is sleeping. I tell him to just put it back up, he again says DS is sleeping. Air Steward starts getting pissed off, I snap at DH to put the bloody seat up. He does so reluctantly and DS does not wake.

Once everything is cleared away he puts the seat fully back again. The woman complains that he’s doing that out of badness because “the kid” is still asleep. Her OH confirms that yes, DH is a twat.

My take on it is that both were being unreasonable at different times. My sister however says this was all on DH.

I’m not - I responded to that in another post.

The woman is the one who started name calling. Perhaps she should learn that you catch more flies with honey?

She was calling a spade a spade, the DH embarrassed himself.

Uhghg · 08/01/2026 18:01

I do actually think DH had a point but the way he acted was ridiculous.

I don’t know about seat reclining etiquette though and so never usually recline it just in case.

The person who acted in a ridiculous manner is the woman who snapped at a man to adjust his sleeping 4yo’s seat simply bc she didn’t want him to do it and then called him a twat for saying no.

I can’t believe the people excusing her entitlement.

PistachioTiramisu · 08/01/2026 18:05

A small child does not need a reclined seat.

ParmaVioletTea · 08/01/2026 18:06

You were twats not to put the seat back up during drinks and meal service. Reclining outside those times s fine but your DH was rude and inconsiderate not to put the seat back up during a meal service.

And really rude to argue with cabin staff. Their job is hard enough without dealing with idiots

Growlybear83 · 08/01/2026 18:07

I think your husband was being 100% unreasonable. There is nothing worse than sitting behind some tear who reclines their seat the second the seat belt goes off, even more so when it’s for a four year old who could sleep perfectly well with the seat upright.

WhitePudding · 08/01/2026 18:08

It is, were we being unreasonable.

Yes, your husband was.

I’ve never been on a flight but I’m wondering why do they have reclining seats if it’s not acceptable to recline them ??

It is acceptable to recline them after the meal service. Most people do on long haul flights, especially night flights, despite what you read on here. It’s not acceptable to recline into someone’s dinner and the cabin crew will usually ask you to put the seat up if you don’t do it yourself.

IMO all parties are in the wrong. The woman behind should have waited until the meal service was actually happening, and should have asked politely in any event. The OP’s DH should have done what was asked of him by cabin crew without being a tosser about it. And as the DS was sleeping fine in an un-reclined seat there was no need to put it back again.

Love2read12 · 08/01/2026 18:08

Seats are meant to recline - well if they recline then they are meant for that and allowed to use. Against the grain but maybe he could have handle better or tried to see her point. Dont think it’s a big deal tbh. 7 hour flight recline the seat if it’s a feature if the chair.

Ginmonkeyagain · 08/01/2026 18:09

If someone reclined their seat on me before meal service on a red eye I'd be prepared to commit murder.

Team your DH is a twat.

HappyOctober · 08/01/2026 18:09

So strange, I think the woman was unnecessarily rude and he was only helping your child to sleep which I would absolutely prioritise on a 7 hour flight. Unless the seat was in my lap I wouldn’t mind someone doing this if I could see it was to help their child sleep.

eurochick · 08/01/2026 18:09

matercatta · 08/01/2026 17:48

Convention is its polite to recline once the meal service has been cleared and not before

I agree with this. I used to fly a lot and this is the norm. Once food and drink has been cleared away the cabin lights are usually dimmed and those who want to then recline. It is pretty much impossible to use the tray table on most aircraft if the seat in front is reclined and the crew usually ask for any reclined seats to be put upright when they serve food or drinks to the person behind.

Btowngirl · 08/01/2026 18:09

Omg the woman in front of me had her seat reclined almost a whole 7 hour flight whilst my 7 month baby was on my lap. I personally would prefer it if the seats just didn’t recline. We didn’t recline then 3YO DDs seat either, unnecessary.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 08/01/2026 18:09

I think she was being unreasonable at the start as food / drinks were not being served

She might have been in theory, but she probably suspected DH had no intention of ever raising the seat during the flight and it seems she was right

Tiswa · 08/01/2026 18:10

Reclining a seat is not going to stop a stiff neck and reclining on an early morning flight prevents any form of using the entertainment system.

lying back is for night flights at best

Your DH was a twat - do you know the best way to have your child sleep and not get a stiff neck at that age - lie over you. Inconvenience you not some other person.

Scared0112 · 08/01/2026 18:11

Dh is asshole. I don’t know why they have reclining seats when everyone’s like bloody sardines as it is

freakingscared · 08/01/2026 18:11

DH did nothing wrong !he should be annoyed at you for not sticking up for him in front of others . Literally the seats are there to recline . Yes it’s annoying but it’s what they are there to do . It had happened to em several times and I just recline back if I need more room but in no way would I swear at someone , specially when the reason was a sleeping child .

Brefugee · 08/01/2026 18:11

Your DH was being an utter pain in the bum. I would have been making sure my knee was strategically placed to annoy the shit out of him

harriethoyle · 08/01/2026 18:12

The clue that your DH was the twat was a) when the crew sided with the other passenger b) when they get annoyed because he refused to follow instructions.

he sounds like a prize cuntpuffin.

justpassmethemouse · 08/01/2026 18:13

Couple was completely unreasonable. Plane seats are designed to recline.

DisforDarkChocolate · 08/01/2026 18:13

Your DH was bloody horrible.

pottymouth40 · 08/01/2026 18:13

ToKittyornottoKitty · 08/01/2026 18:04

She was calling a spade a spade, the DH embarrassed himself.

Calling someone a twat for not adjusting his sleeping child’s chair - which he is perfectly entitled to keep reclined until meal time - is not calling a spade a spade. It’s being a nasty, entitled twat which is rather ironic.

Imagine going through life thinking you can rudely order someone to do as you say and then call them names when they quite understandably don’t do it?

I don’t even know if this is real bc I can’t believe people are this entitled in RL.

Orangemintcream · 08/01/2026 18:13

I’m camp if seats can recline they’re allowed to be used. People forget not everyone is on their first flight that day/night.

Catwalking · 08/01/2026 18:13

why couldn’t thoughtless complaining nag behind child, put her poxy drink/beaker on her husbands tray?

BookAndPiano · 08/01/2026 18:15

What an ungracious, stupid and unmannerly lump you are married to.

Surely you cannot delight in this prize.

Laplandsnow · 08/01/2026 18:15

The woman was being ridiculous
seats recline, suck it up.
