Angry woman on plane, Was we BU?

7 hour flight with DH and DS(4). As soon as seatbelt lights went off DH fully reclined exhausted DSs seat so he could sleep. The woman behind snapped at DH to put the seat back up as drinks would be coming around soon. DH said no as drinks currently not being served. She called him a selfish twat to her OH.
Drinks/snacks start coming around. Woman tells DH to put the seat back up. DH put the seat back up half way so to not wake DS. She tells him to put it fully up. He tells her DS is sleeping. Her OH then tells her to speak to steward which she does. Steward asks DH to put the seat back up - he tells her DS is sleeping. I tell him to just put it back up, he again says DS is sleeping. Air Steward starts getting pissed off, I snap at DH to put the bloody seat up. He does so reluctantly and DS does not wake.

Once everything is cleared away he puts the seat fully back again. The woman complains that he’s doing that out of badness because “the kid” is still asleep. Her OH confirms that yes, DH is a twat.

My take on it is that both were being unreasonable at different times. My sister however says this was all on DH.

Oh OP, you must have a rotten life with him.

This.

I don’t get these responses at all. If someone on a plane reclines their seat, I would just recline mine too. I expect people to recline their seat if it’s reclinable!

Your 4yo child was asleep.

Did the woman really think your dh was going to go out of his way to be nice after she’d called him a twat?

reclining seats are there so people can recline, especially on long haul flights.

It’s really entitled to expect you can kick off and call someone awful names bc someone reclines their seat.

You have to have it upright during food and drink service though, and it's definitely not cool to argue to the toss when you've been told by the air steward.

MrsDoubtingMyself · 08/01/2026 17:54

DH is a twat

Meals and drinks yes, not the night thing though as people are likely to be on a variety of different time zones so 'night' can be any time on a plane.

Night
is set by the flight crew
If you’re crossing time zones they put the lights out, blinds shut and the lights back on again in accordance with the time zone you’ll be arriving in

So there is a ‘night time’ set on a long flight

this does not allow for individuals who may have been up travelling to airports etc. but it’s wrong to say there is no night time

YourTidyGreyRobin · 08/01/2026 17:55

100% on your husband. He is a twat.

blackrosebud · 08/01/2026 17:55

Flown long haul with a 4 year old and he napped on me. I’m his mum, so it’s me he inconveniences not strangers.

Zanatdy · 08/01/2026 17:56

He is being unreasonable. No-one is going to be comfortable with a seat reclined the whole way. Why didn’t he have DS rest his head on his lap instead? Inconvenience himself. There’s so little room in an economy seat so I personally only recline on a night flight after all service is done and cleared away. Your DH was just trying to make a point and i’d have been totally embarrassed to be with him. Why can’t people be considerate of fellow travellers. I’d have just got my dc to rest across me rather than inconvenience other passengers. Wish they’d just stop reclining full stop on day flights.

Didn’t even read the post… straight on to comment on the awful grammar in the title… unbelievable…

You don’t recline on day flights IMO

However it’s a bit of a grey area if it’s a night flight and kids need to get to sleep earlier than adults but they haven’t yet dimmed the lights. Like if the flight leaves at 7pm but they will do meal etc and then dim at 9.30 - kids will need to sleep before then.

Your DS could clearly sleep without the seat reclined though so this is all irrelevant and your DH was being a twat.

But that’s exactly it - it’s YOUR opinion.

It’s my opinion that if someone wants to recline their reclinable seat, they are perfectly entitled to do this. And if airlines didn’t want passengers to recline their seats they would fix it so it couldn’t be done.

Or they would put a message over the tannoy saying “it is forbidden to recline seats on a daytime flight”.

Why didn’t the silly cow just recline her own seat instead of getting herself irate and throwing swear words around?

Rosecoffeecup · 08/01/2026 17:57

Your dh is a massive twat for not doing as the steward asked

2024TN · 08/01/2026 17:58

Your DH was being an entitled twat.

This wasn’t about his child, it was about HiS child being entitled to the space.

dentalflosser · 08/01/2026 17:58

When our DC was nearly 4 we went abroad and DC just lay across our laps covered with a small blanket. We had 3 seats together and it was fine.

Barney16 · 08/01/2026 17:59

Your DH was unreasonable, I would have been mortified.

firstofallimadelight · 08/01/2026 17:59

you paid for your child’s seat, they are entitled to sleep comfortably. The couple were arseholes, if they were uncomfortable they need to use a different airline with better spaced out seats .

Why are you ignoring the bit where she wanted food and drinks DH wouldn’t put the seats up for this either? Despite being told to by airline staff, until his wife shouted at him. No decent parent would rather have swearing conflict with strangers on a flight rather than just lying their 4 year old on them instead. He wasn’t putting his child first, he was just being a twat.

Uhghg · 08/01/2026 17:59

She was rude to snap at DH but then he acted childish by acting like a dick and causing a scene.

Good for you and her DH for keeping your cool.

I feel sorry for you and the stewardess.

How embarrassing.

Blogswife · 08/01/2026 18:01

Your DS is entitled to recline his seat when meals are not being served . I had this issue on a long haul flight . People behind me had their seats fully reclined but didn’t want me to recline mine to sleep as the man had long legs and claimed he needed the leg room.

I asked the steward for clarification and was told I can recline at all times other than meal times
If however your DS was asleep and didn’t need to recline I suspect that your DH was being awkward ( I’d have probably done the same if I’d been called a twat)!

Uhghg · 08/01/2026 18:01

I do actually think DH had a point but the way he acted was ridiculous.

I don’t know about seat reclining etiquette though and so never usually recline it just in case.

ThejoyofNC · 08/01/2026 18:02

The plastic cups on a plane hold maybe 200ml of liquid. Could she not just hold her bloody cup? I'm on your DH side, there's no rule about not reclining for drinks. What did you want him to do, keep moving the seat up and down like a yo-yo?

DrPrunesqualer · 08/01/2026 18:02

IamtheDevilsAvocado · 08/01/2026 17:53

It's not OK if it leads to massive discomfort for the person behind....

I had this flying back from China... An entitled arse thought it was OK to put it back maximally... I could barely squeeze out of my seat... When u was sitting I couldn't even make a fist between my face and the reclined seat... Literally 4-5 inches...

The stewards remonstrated with him... He refused and started waving his fists around...

It’s at that point that you keep getting up to walk around
The attendant would need to wake him for that each time

Up down up down
Ive never needed to do it myself but it’s a thought

I’m not - I responded to that in another post.

The woman is the one who started name calling. Perhaps she should learn that you catch more flies with honey?

There’s no room to hold a cup and very dangerous if it’s hot liquid

When food and drinks are served all seats must be upright for good reason

BillieWiper · 08/01/2026 18:03

Yeah he should've tried to get the kid to sleep without dropping the seat. And the steward shouldn't have had to tell him to do it.

So yeah he was U. The other couple were rude but I can kind of see why they were annoyed.

Geeseinarowhonk · 08/01/2026 18:04

Your husband is a knob, and an even bigger one for arguing with the cabin crew. Jeez, these people walk among us...

Vaxtable · 08/01/2026 18:04

Your dh was vvv unreasonable able. Who reclines the chair of a 4 year old? Put the arm rests up and they can sleep crossways
