DD used to want to move to America. She's just said no to a free/cheap holiday in the US because she's worried she will be shot for being gay/different.
If the ICE agent acted out of fear and not deliberate murder (which is doubtful, going off the footage), then their training is appalling.
I was told by UK firearms officers that they are trained to expect the public to act irrationally when faced with armed officers and practice multiple situations over and over and over until the response to de-escalate the situation by lowering their weapons when safe to do so is automatic.
What happened to me was that I was in the kitchen, slicing watermelon, when I heard banging and scuffling outside the backyard. There was a 12-foot solid brick wall between me and the noise, so I couldn't see anything. I opened the gate to see what was happening and found myself in the middle of 6 armed men.
They were clearly police, but that didn't register at the time. My brain shut down, and I froze. I could hear them shouting, but I don't think it registered that they were shouting at me to go back inside until after one of them pushed me back inside and closed the gate, upon which I walked back inside in a daze, told DH there were men with guns in the alley, and burst into tears.
An hour later, the officer who pushed me safely back into my garden came to check I was OK and assured me I was never in any danger. Their training is robust; they practice every possible scenario over and over until their reactions are instant before they are ever allowed to handle a loaded weapon, let alone be out in public with one. He said even if I had run out of the garden screaming and shouting and waving my arms, their training would have been to lower their guns and safely and calmly apprehend me with as little force as necessary. Only if I had also been armed with a gun and aiming at them would I have ever been in danger of being shot.
Anyone who believes you would behave rationally when armed men are shouting at you is an idiot. Police should be trained to expect this.
