Is anyone on, or have friends travelling on the 11.15 from Penzance to Edinburgh just now? My son has left his back pack on the train when he got off at Birmingham New Street. A black backpack containing all his stuff! Carriage F5. Can't get any answer on the phone at Lost Property and he has registered on line. Long shot but....please!

Finally got a human...a lovely lady at East Midlands who is going to get station staff at Sheffield to hop on and look for it and give it to train staff for safe keeping. ( take nore up helpful lady at Birmingham!). His tracker says its still on the train so fingers crossed nobody nicks it between times. I will murder DS when I get hold of him!!

Please don’t murder him. These things happen. It could happen to any of us, even the most diligent amongst us - including me (twice!).

Icebreaker911 · 04/01/2026 07:21

That's a long train ride (phew!)...

Hope the bag is recovered & returned safely - good idea having a tracker inside (Hope it's a tracker & not his phone - thats an extra worry 😕)

Don't they have a train manager on long distance rides (Avanti!) Surely BR would contact the person in the first instance & they would take charge of the bag until the end of the journey - keep us updated on its safe return op 🙂

Pipsquiggle · 04/01/2026 07:29

@Hedjwitch before you travel anywhere just make sure you know where the train line's central lost property office is and how they process it.

When my son left his football boot bag on the train in Maidenhead, the boot bag ended up at the GWR lost property office in Bristol - even though his train didn't go there.
They did have a very good system of logging it, locating it and sending it back - it did take a few days though. We did have to pay postage.

Should be St Jude for lost things...

St Jude is lost causes.
St Anthony is lost items.

JennyWrenSeven · 04/01/2026 08:30

Finger’s crossed you’re reunited with your DS’s backpack tomorrow.

CautiousLurker2 · 04/01/2026 08:49

Am watching this in the hope of a happy ending and to reaffirm my faith in human nature… really hoping you don’t have to drive/train it to Edinburgh to collect the backpack, though I know it may have to be done!

MyrtlethePurpleTurtle · 04/01/2026 08:52

Fingers crossed

Hedjwitch · 04/01/2026 08:58

Thanks all. Looks like lost property is closed until tomorrow. If the tracker is still saying Edinburgh I think we can assume the bag is there. DS is now in Liverpool but will be back tonight.
Mumsnet can be such a helpful place, restores faith in humanity.

Tweet (x) the train company with that info
if you had done so at the time one of the train crew could have gone and got it
or son could have contacted staff in Birmingham station and they could have messaged through to the train manager

i hope you get it back

chipsandpeas · 04/01/2026 09:08

Never fails. Fact.

I’m an atheist but I pray to St Anthony, rarely lets me down 😁

Great to hear you can collect it. I always put my rucksack between my feet on trains so I don’t forget it!

Hedjwitch · 04/01/2026 09:56

Just to clarify I am in Scotland, although not Edinburgh, but further North. DS will be home tonight so can make the trip to Edinburgh tomorrow, roads and weather permitting.
A pp asked what was in the bag. DS sent me a list of contents in case I had to identify it. I had a lump in my throat at item
" Wallet with photo of Grandma in".

How can you be an atheist but believe in praying to St.Anthony 😂

You are much less of an atheist than you claim to be.

Rowgtfc72 · 04/01/2026 10:16

My brother left his case on the train at King's Cross once. Went to the pub, didn't realise till he got home.
Reported it missing the next day, three days in didn't hold out much hope. On the fourth day he was contacted to say it had turned up and they could send it to him.
It had contained 2 laptops, gifts and expensive clothes and trainers.
Clearly someone had been through it.
All they'd taken was his rock and sugar dummies from Cleethorpes beach.
He's more careful these days.

Hope you're reunited with the bag soon.

Well, if needed, I can go to Waverley and get it on Monday. The OP and I are in contact now, so sure I can get it couriered if necessary. I'll be going through there on my way to the office anyway. It's now my mission to reunite the OP's son and the bag!!

The world definitely needs more people like you. What a lovely person you are.

I mean, how did he leave his back pack behind?? Surely it was sitting next to him or above him on the train..? What does it have in it? Hopefully he will be more careful in future, what a divv!

I left a bag with my passport in it behind on a train once, only realised once I got on my next train. Luckily it was an end of the line station so the train hadn't immediately moved on so I quickly ran back on it, got my bag, then got back on my train.

NotDarkGothicMama · 04/01/2026 11:26

I hope you find it ok OP.

I once took the train back out of London from a visa appointment and left the bag containing all our passports and visas on the train. Luckily, I realised when I got to the station carpark and it was a frequent service so I jumped on the next train and followed it to the end of the line, where a cleaner had already retrieved it. That was about a grand's worth of passports and visas, so I was extremely relieved!

Alpacajigsaw · 04/01/2026 11:31

Argh hope you get it back. Bloody kids. My son once left his on the Glasgow to Edinburgh train and didn’t twig til we were on the train from Edinburgh to London! Thankfully we got it back when we got back to Glasgow.

Ferro · 04/01/2026 11:32

left the bag containing all our passports and visas on the train

Passports go in a bag that never gets put down.

Oh, be quiet. It can be left over from childhood. I was brought up Catholic, am an absolute atheist, (have been for a very long time) but may reference a saint/ Catholic saying the odd time in conversation - it's a cultural reference point.

Why are religious folk always determined that others are also secretly religious? So wearing.
