Hedjwitch · 03/01/2026 17:57

Is anyone on, or have friends travelling on the 11.15 from Penzance to Edinburgh just now? My son has left his back pack on the train when he got off at Birmingham New Street. A black backpack containing all his stuff! Carriage F5. Can't get any answer on the phone at Lost Property and he has registered on line. Long shot but....please!

Never fails. Fact.

You are all so kind. Latest is the tracker shows it being in Edinburgh so I'll go over tomorrow if Lost Property is open on a Sunday. Thank you for your support and especially to @HollaHolla

Think Waverley Lost Property only open Monday to Friday.

Alcoholrecovery · 03/01/2026 23:07

Good luck to you! I hope you get the bag back tomorrow. What a stress!

@HollaHolla you made me cry. There is so much awful news out there at the moment that a real life stranger looking to help someone she's never met before is just lovely! The world needs more people like you! x

Should be St Jude for lost things...

Ach, that's very kind, but it honestly was no bother. I was heading to Waverley anyway, and I have had folks be kind to me. So, paying it forward.
Sadly I couldn't get the bag, but I will keep all things crossed that the OP can get it back tomorrow.

Strawberrydelight78 · 03/01/2026 23:31

In my experience they take it off at the next stop after it's found. Then you have to travel to that station to retrieve it. I've never known them to send it back on a train.

sesquipedalian · 03/01/2026 23:33

@Emptyandsad
It’s St Anthony for lost things and St Jude for lost causes.

HollaHolla · 03/01/2026 23:34

Well, if needed, I can go to Waverley and get it on Monday. The OP and I are in contact now, so sure I can get it couriered if necessary. I'll be going through there on my way to the office anyway. It's now my mission to reunite the OP's son and the bag!!

Nope, St Anthony. Never fails. One DC had lost a cheque last night. Looked every where. Quick prayer (lapsed catholic here...) 10 minutes later it turned up.

snowibunni · 03/01/2026 23:46

Ooh meant to say. Fingers crossed for bag retrieval!

TwinkTucker · 03/01/2026 23:49

I mean, how did he leave his back pack behind?? Surely it was sitting next to him or above him on the train..? What does it have in it? Hopefully he will be more careful in future, what a divv!

Sorry, OP, unfortunately lost property is only open (Platform 19)
Monday to Friday 09:00 - 17:30 only.
A very kind man called Johnny Bryan helped me. He said they (Scotrail) can't even get access to anything, as it's run by a private company. You've probably already got this info, but contact is as follows:
Edinburgh (Waverley)
Phone number:
tel:0330 024 0215 0330 024 0215
Operated by:
Network Rail
Please register your lost item at lostproperty.org as lost property at these stations are operated by Excess Baggage Company.

I'm so sorry not to have been able to get a live bag retrieval for you. However, Johnny said that the train had been due in at 22:13. He couldn't check if it had already come in, because, y'know, travel chaos today. He did say that it terminates here, though, and the cleaners hand everything in.
Fingers crossed for you.

You are such a lovely, incredible person.

Toothfairy89 · 04/01/2026 00:15

When you say go over tomorrow do you mean travel all the way from Birmingham to Edinburgh? In the hope the bag is in lost property?

What is in this bag?

Kibble19 · 04/01/2026 00:45

Probably don’t reveal what’s in the bag or what it looks like, OP. You’ll find that someone reads this and “picks it up for you”.

Where was it? 1996?

FFSToEverythingSince2020 · 04/01/2026 05:10

@Hedjwitch I’m near Waverley. If tracker shows it here, please let me know if you need help. Good luck!

My son left a trombone on a train once. Had to drive 30 miles to get it. It happens. Good Luck OP

My DS did the same a few months go. Managed to remember his bag of M&S snacks though! Thankfully he had his car at the station and the train terminated two stops away so he was able to drive there and they had it.

Oh that’s so unfair. People forget things all the time, that’s why there’s the message to remember to take your belongings with you. Especially if you’ve put it in the rack above you. It only takes a moment’s absent mindedness and the instant you realise, the train is pulling away.

I mean, that’s why there’s Lost Property.

Someone left a precious violin on a train once https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-london-50195591

Edited to add that I’ve noticed that he did get the violin back. Fingers crossed OP.

@Hedjwitch It’s under FAQ on the LostProperty.org and they cannot reunite you with your item unless you’ve filled out a form on there (I think you said your son has). As others have said, I confirm that the LostProperty.org office at Waverley is only Monday to Friday. Here’s the link:
