To find January depressing?

Sunnylily · 01/01/2026 21:25

I love December and November as we get ready for the Christmas and the new year.
I reflect about the whole year and get ready for the next year.
But once the new year starts it becomes very depressing for me
Everyone else seems to be coming back fresh and happy to office. Wondering if it's just me who find January more depressing?

Yabu - I like January
Yanbu - January is depressing

I know I’m in the minority here, but I love January. The last three months of the year are my least favourite weather wise, so I love that January means they’re over and summer is coming. It helps that I don’t get into too much debt over Christmas though.

PeonyPatch · 01/01/2026 21:29

January is bloody COLD as well, and nothing to look forward to! Pay day is usually further away. We have all probably over indulged. We’ve got no pretty lights and decs to enjoy.

January is a bastard of a month, I agree! Nothing worse than going back to work in Jan after time off at Christmas too. I almost feel like time stands still in the days in between Christmas and new year, then it’s back to the grind.

CalmShaker · 01/01/2026 21:32

Perhaps give it chance op, embrace it , we are on day 1

TheNameWasOnceChosen · 01/01/2026 21:54

Go away on holiday to a hot country!

FastFood · 01/01/2026 21:55

Oh wow that's a very controversial statement

MaineCharacter · 01/01/2026 22:05

My birthdays in January, so maybe I'm a little biased..but i love it.
Going away on a cruise in a few weeks to celebrate!

MrsCillian · 01/01/2026 22:06

I enjoy January. February not so much and I hate March!

neverwakeasleepingbaby · 01/01/2026 22:07

So depressing. There are about 0.3 seconds of sunlight before it goes dark again. If you work in an office it’s entirely possible to miss all daylight if you don’t venture out for lunch. I also hate February but a little bit less. March to December is nice though!

newornotnew · 01/01/2026 22:10

It's known to be a time many people find difficult, you're not alone.
The best approach is to plan your route through it - some people hibernate, some people get out and do more.

menopausalmare · 01/01/2026 22:10

Each January we decorate a room. This year, it's the hall, stairs and landing. We enjoy a project and it helps to do something positive and focuses the mind. Once the spring is here, we can enjoy days out etc. If DIY isn't your thing, have friends over for a games night.

GalaxyJam · 01/01/2026 22:11

It’s a very common thing for people to find January depressing, surely?

WaneyEdge · 01/01/2026 22:13

Bloody awful month.

It’s about 25 weeks long and is so depressing. Dark, cold, nothing to look forward to.

HumphreysCorner · 01/01/2026 22:14

I don’t like long January and short February but like March onwards.

RaraRachael · 01/01/2026 22:14

I hate January. It's cold, dark and depressing and so far from nice weather.

There's just not anything good about it.

SeaShellsSanctuary1 · 01/01/2026 22:15

I'm a big fan of light evenings and for me January has turned the corner getting lighter every day.

Dollyfloss · 01/01/2026 22:16

You find JANUARY DEPRESSING?? Wow, hold the front page!!

🤣🤣🤣Only joking op - it’s just that most people would say they find jan/feb the most depressing months I think. I’m googling trips to NY in Feb for something to look forward to.

UnhappyHobbit · 01/01/2026 22:18

If you try to make January less depressing, you may change your mind about it. January is only what you make it, just like any other month is.

Coka · 01/01/2026 22:20

I have embraced Januarys crappyness. Less pressure to go out so I stay home and hibernate. I try to focus on rest and reset for the year ahead. Lots of family time at home and less spending. Its now one of my favourite months.

Icecreamhelps · 01/01/2026 22:21

Make of it what you will, but if your lucky there are going to be lots of Januarys in your life. Look forward each day gets longer, spring bulbs are coming through. I'm having a bit of a clear out it's a good time to have a reset.

Tryingatleast · 01/01/2026 22:21

This morning was bright and dry. That’s all I need!!!

clinellwipe · 01/01/2026 22:22

Historically, I have found January utterly miserable for the reasons you’ve said. But my autistic son thrives on routine and therefore I now thrive on routine! He loved Christmas but we’re all desperate for term time to restart and get back into a normal rhythm

ChopstickNovice · 01/01/2026 22:26

I don't love it but find it's what you make it. Plan nice things to enjoy even small things.

JustGotToKeepOnKeepingOn · 01/01/2026 22:40

I love January! I don’t like November and December with all the ridiculous fuss about Christmas. I breathe a sigh of relief when it’s all over and I can get back to normal. Maybe if people didn’t hype up Christmas so much they wouldn’t have such a ‘crash’ when it’s all over?

GalaxyJam · 01/01/2026 22:45

I don’t ’hype up’ Christmas, but I do enjoy it and am sad when it’s over. Mid winter festivals were invented for a reason… some light and joy in the middle of the long, dark, cold days. There’s no shame in enjoying a mid winter festival.

Allbymyself123 · 01/01/2026 22:48

I hate January! It’s dark and cold and usually wet and / or icey and windy. It goes on forever and no one has any money towards the end of the month and i think at least November Christmas is coming and then i like December!

i don’t like February either but at least it’s shorter & the kids get a wee break again from school. Once we get into March i start to feel a bit better as it starts looking brighter again with Spring around the corner.

April we often have some really nice sunny weather & can start to look forward to things like the summer holidays. My kids have summer birthdays too so June, July & August are my favourite months. I find May and September funny “in between” months but kids have a few days off and sometimes we can get a few days away to break them up so all in i can tolerate most months but not January! 1 day down 30 more to go….
