To find January depressing?

I love December and November as we get ready for the Christmas and the new year.
I reflect about the whole year and get ready for the next year.
But once the new year starts it becomes very depressing for me
Everyone else seems to be coming back fresh and happy to office. Wondering if it's just me who find January more depressing?

Yabu - I like January
Yanbu - January is depressing

YANBU. It’s 9 weeks until
msrxh. I’m going to count off those weeks!

This made me think: actually I think March is my most disliked month. It is technically spring but is often still cold and wintry - whereas at least you expect that in January. And by then for me work is getting busy, whereas you can have a slower, gentler start to January.

March is awful. We sometimes get snow or named storms, yet I feel like you're expected to be starting to get out and about more. It often rains and is hard to dress for.

Both my daughters have January birthdays so it’s full of celebrations for us! And work is quiet. But I’m more a winter person so not so bothered by the cold and dark. I do feel very broke after Xmas then double birthday, though.

The only good thing about January is Burns Night! Thank god for Rabbie giving us Scots an excuse for a party in January to cheer us all up.

TheChosenTwo · 03/01/2026 00:04

You’re obviously not alone, people bang on about January being depressing, often the ones who spend months hyping up Christmas!
My Christmas period lasts about 2 weeks, we come home from a holiday tomorrow and I’m looking forward to getting back into a regular routine again. I quite like January for a fresh start, tend to feel quite motivated and I generally just enjoy having the house back to normal.
i don’t spend more than I can afford at Christmas which is one reason some people also hate the start of the year, because they’re broke and waiting for payday.
But no, I like things about all the months and seasons really. It IS chilly though and I do feel the cold!

I work in healthcare and it’s always manic at work over Christmas and New Year. I enjoy the traditions of Christmas - deccies, food, parties, lights, the religious aspect (I am not religious) but I also LOVE January - it’s the beginning of a New Year, spring is round the corner and professionally it’s wind down time for me - it’s a chilled month.

I know I’m in the minority here, but I love January. The last three months of the year are my least favourite weather wise, so I love that January means they’re over and summer is coming. It helps that I don’t get into too much debt over Christmas though.

Yes, I detest the dark wintry November to December spell. As soon as the mornings get light earlier I'm happier and more motivated.
Its not long till February, then Easter and into Spring walks and late night shopping without a torch .

Yes I hate the closing in of November and by the end of Jan it's light at 5pm.

Go outside, it’s a beautiful sunny winter day. You’ll soon perk up 😄

Cherrytree86 · 04/01/2026 10:23

I hate winter, full stop. It’s cold, not enough daylight and certainly not enough sunlight, you have to put the heating on which is expensive, always needing to wear a coat, socks etc. it’s miserable. People say - no such thing as bad weather, if you wear the right clothes but that’s just wrong.

So yeah YANBU, OP
