To find January depressing?

Sunnylily · 01/01/2026 21:25

I love December and November as we get ready for the Christmas and the new year.
I reflect about the whole year and get ready for the next year.
But once the new year starts it becomes very depressing for me
Everyone else seems to be coming back fresh and happy to office. Wondering if it's just me who find January more depressing?

Yabu - I like January
Yanbu - January is depressing

I wonder if those who are saying use it to stay at home, read, craft, relax etc aren’t at the stage of life where they have full time jobs plus young energetic kids who have the same hobbies and the same need for amusement, exercise and fresh air in January as they do in every other month of the year?

manicpixieschemegirl · 02/01/2026 17:17

I actually quite like it. It was the most beautiful, cold, clear day today with hardly any people or cars around and I just loved the stillness of it. It was so calming.

I also don’t buy into January being the new year so no longer feel the pressure of setting goals or starting fresh. I allow myself to slow down and rest, then I feel re-energised when Spring is on the horizon. I prefer to follow nature’s timeline.

I think it’s perfectly normal and usual to feel this way, the term January Blues exists for a reason! It’s because Christmas is so hyped up and it’s at the end of the month too so no time to come down from any of it before the new year hits. Plus people put so much pressure on themselves to create resolutions and stick to them, they’re often massively unrealistic ones. When they quit a couple of weeks into January, they spiral and feel even worse.

I try to look at it positively. It’s getting lighter in the evenings day by day. It’s still cosy enough to have my fireplace fairy lights and candles lit in the evening. I enjoy reading with a hot drink in the evening lots too. Plus it’s a chance to have a fresh start, stick to some reasonable resolutions.

Uptightmumma · 02/01/2026 17:52

my birthday month! I am lucky if I get acknowledge on the day: everyone is skint, it’s cold; everyone is going dry January, vegan January, on a health kick so no one wants to celebrate the way we celebrate there’s. I normally just get vouchers cos it’s just been Christmas - which I don’t necessarily mind but it feels lazy!

i run my own business which is always horrendously busy in January but with not with money making which means after a quite December I am still skint!

it would love to right it off

Liftedmeup · 02/01/2026 17:56

I like January but am less keen on February, the “cruellest month”. First week of Jan is still Christmas, so we still have the tree and decorations up. We keep lights and greenery up to Candlemas in February, so that helps too.

ConnieHeart · 02/01/2026 18:01

It's what you make of it. It's coming around every year so why be unhappy about something you can't change? You can only change your attitude to it. Do something you enjoy every day whatever the month is

Mumofsoontobe3 · 02/01/2026 18:03

I hate January too. I'm skint, cold and the days drag on and on and on. I'm with you OP!

It’s ok to dislike things. No one is relentlessly positive about everything. I don’t spent my January moping around crying that it’s January, but I am happy to declare that I hate it and am glad when it’s over!

Middlemarch123 · 02/01/2026 18:07

Hate November and December. Damp, dark, dreary.
January is great, Spring is this year. The days are getting longer. It might snow. Perfect. Good days ahead. Dark and dismal behind. What’s not to love?

Op said it was "depressing" which is more than disliking something. If I felt like that about something I'd do something about it! Life is too short just moping about it. Today I went on a lovely walk with a friend. Nothing too far. Just a chat & a walk. Back to work on Monday & it will be nice to see everyone again. I felt like the OP a couple of years ago, dreading going back to work in Jan. So I changed my job to something I genuinely love

I think it was just a turn of phrase rather than it making her clinically depressed!

OriginalUsername2 · 02/01/2026 18:25

Spring Is when nature’s new year begins, really we’re still at the beginning of winter so we should still be in hibernation mode. Keep some twinkly lights up and embrace it!

BarbaraKirksKaftan · 02/01/2026 18:40

I don’t particularly mind January, it is February that I dislike. I am really looking forward to the longer days by that point.

GentleSheep · 02/01/2026 18:54

I actually enjoy it, probably due to several family birthdays in the month, also it's a new year, feels like new things and improvements are more possible than any other month!

VivaVivaa · 02/01/2026 18:58

January is okay. Last few years it’s been beautiful weather wise (compared to November and December which are often wet) and it’s a nice change of pace after Christmas.

It’s February and the first bit of March that can get in the bin as far as I’m concerned, winter has dragged on enough by that point 🤣

AllPlayedOut · 02/01/2026 18:58

The snow part for one. I detest the bloody stuff and Winter generally.

IreneFromSkibbereen · 02/01/2026 18:58

January has the advantage of evenings slowly getting noticeably lighter, and Xmas being over (I’m not a fan). But February - ugh. By that time everyone is heartily sick of winter and February just drags on pointlessly, it’s always grey and wet, you think it’s nearly spring but it just isn’t. I don’t have a good word to say about February!

Zanatdy · 02/01/2026 19:07

Tangled123 · 01/01/2026 21:27

I know I’m in the minority here, but I love January. The last three months of the year are my least favourite weather wise, so I love that January means they’re over and summer is coming. It helps that I don’t get into too much debt over Christmas though.

I wish that was true. Winter is not even half way over in January.

Knittedfairies2 · 02/01/2026 19:14

@Uptightmumma - I could have written your post, except for the having your own business bit. Nobody really wants to celebrate my birthday, and they're usually still on their no alcohol/cake kicks.

Catwoman8 · 02/01/2026 19:17

They don't call it January blues for nothing. To be honest though, I find Feb and March worse as I am fed up of winter by this point. Having things in the diary to look forward to helps and the lighter evenings help

Oneisnotamused · 02/01/2026 19:21

February is worse. It’s not called coffin-filler month for nothing. People just give up in February

Yes I realised that

Whataninterestinglookingpotato · 02/01/2026 19:39

I don’t hate January. After the madness of Christmas, new year and then dds birthday it’s nice to have a month to just do simple things. Lots of running, lots of reading, lots of country and coastal walks and not too much madness.

But when it comes to there June birthday you are expected to go out for food/drinks whatever forgetting you just about got a txt 🙄🙄

billiongulls · 02/01/2026 21:31

January and February are quite hard in this part of the world. Short days, cold, wet. But the days are getting longer, and spring is on the way.
