How is this possible? Double cream turned out to be yoghurt!

I was making a trifle this morning and opened two pint pots of double cream from Waitrose with expiry dates of Boxing Day. Thought they seemed weirdly thick. Tasted.

Both pots contained plain yoghurt! It was definitely yoghurt rather than cream that had gone off. Or at a push, sour cream.

my question is, how is this possible?! Has this happened to anyone else? It really confused me (and I had to get emergency cream from little Tesco!)

They’d turned to yogurt? WTH? This has never happened to me before

BarbaraVineFan · 23/12/2025 22:24

I didn’t get the impression they had turned to yoghurt, more that the pots had somehow been mistakenly filled with yoghurt instead of cream.

Has Jesus been messing about in your fridge?

BarbaraVineFan · 23/12/2025 22:28

Dairy Jesus? I don’t think so

I bought medium washing up gloves from Lidl that was a size Small and chicken wings the wrong flavour in the bag. You'd expect better from Waitrose. It makes you wonder really about lables and allergies but hopefully that's not a possibility. Just wrong packaging on that production run?

Mithral · 23/12/2025 22:29

I need to make custard tomorrow morning for my trifle this has freaked me out!

BarbaraVineFan · 23/12/2025 22:35

@Mithral are you in the south east? If so, I would check

Merry Christmas! I saw your thread the other day and we have literally just had the same thing when we opened our double cream! Also Lidl. Must be a bad batch.

Hadalifeonce · 25/12/2025 17:18

OMG we had exactly the same. DD and I thought the cream was off, it wasn't but definitely soured cream. Waitrose also.

JaquiRussell · 25/12/2025 17:27

Just seen this and it has happened to us, visiting my parents. Two pint of Waitrose Double Cream, packaging was white and blue, dated 27 Dec. But it was like yogurt!! Smelt and tasted fine but it was not double cream. Luckily we brought two and the other is fine. Hertfordshire, South East.

BarbaraVineFan · 25/12/2025 17:59

OP here! Strangely pleased (sorry!) that it happened to others as well- I thought I was going mad (and my elderly dad helpfully suggested ‘it might just be your taste buds’ 😂) . I wonder if they will issue a statement about it like Mitchum did when loads of people got a rash from a batch of deodorant?!

I also bought 2x 600ml pots of double cream
from Waitrose (exp 29/12) and both contained incredibly thick and slightly off smelling cream/yogurt. Not sure what it was - but it’s inedible and now in the bin.

Haupt · 25/12/2025 18:25

I follow the author Barendina Smedley on twitter and she had the same problem from Waitrose - double cream supposedly but sour.

SlenderRations · 25/12/2025 18:41

Another here with Waitrose double cream bought for Christmas but very sour. Definitely was cream though, not yogurt.

WonderfulSmith · 25/12/2025 18:45

I’m now hugely invested in someone hearing back from customer service from the supermarkets.

Choccyp1g · 25/12/2025 18:54

Me too with the waitrose double cream, 300ml, much thicker than normal and slightly sour. Luckily it worked just fine for butternut squash dauphinoise.

cooldarkroom · 25/12/2025 18:55

I bought a liter of double cream. Went to use it, it was milk. Seriously ruined my gratin dauphinois.
I hadnt read the carton, the supermarket had put cartons of milk in the cream section & I was running..
Not my fault obviously . 😇

Who puts milk in cartons?

Oldraver · 25/12/2025 22:50

I've got Sainsbury's double cream that us thick and lumpy though not off

I stopped buying double cream in the summer as had it from several places and was lumpy so stated buying single cream

Icannotremembermyusername · 25/12/2025 22:53

Omg I had the same! Two pots from Waitrose dated 27th. Opened on the 24th and they were both sweet set and definitely off! How weird that there are more! I didn’t use them

cooldarkroom · 26/12/2025 07:58

WonderfulSmith · 25/12/2025 21:28

Who puts milk in cartons?

Exactly… !
It was however fancy, farmer friendly, full fat milk

EleanorReally · 26/12/2025 08:01

the factory workers were either working under duress or sabotaging!

PtiffanyAching · 26/12/2025 08:08

It was Sainsbury’s double cream for us - still cream I think, but lumpy and grainy and full of bits! It smelled fine but went in the bin.

GrandmistressGlitch · 26/12/2025 08:10

Same but double cream from coop that turned out to be thick whipped/soured cream. Dated 1st Jan

RandomFireworks · 26/12/2025 08:16

I thought it was a problem with my fridge ! ! Waitrose double cream here, thicker than thick on the verge of turning into butter and really grainy ! ! Dated 29th Dec
