How is this possible? Double cream turned out to be yoghurt!

I was making a trifle this morning and opened two pint pots of double cream from Waitrose with expiry dates of Boxing Day. Thought they seemed weirdly thick. Tasted.

Both pots contained plain yoghurt! It was definitely yoghurt rather than cream that had gone off. Or at a push, sour cream.

my question is, how is this possible?! Has this happened to anyone else? It really confused me (and I had to get emergency cream from little Tesco!)

That could be the beginning of some scary scien-fi movie😂

But I agree, bloody annoying, if you wanted yogurt, you would have bought yogurt yourself!

My 600g pot of Waitrose cream is absolutely fine. Been using it over the last few days. Are you sure that you haven’t picked up the no.1 crème freche. I use the crème fresh normally because it has a slightly sour taste and a bit less rich than double cream.

Unfortunately, at this time of year when we overload fridges they often don’t chill to the temperature needed to keep foods fresh. If you bought the cream a week ago it may well have successfully turned into yoghurt.

I’ve learned from experience to not be too organised about the Christmas shop and leave any dairy and meat until a couple of days before Christmas which has allowed me to empty the fridge of the normal weekly foods and then just storing food for Christmas Day and Boxing Day. The supermarkets are restocked and open today so I don’t have to overload my own fridge.

Interested to know if it's the same supplier to co op , Waitrose, and Lidl.
And how long before we read about it in the press.

Sounds like a mistake at the factory possibly missed in the rush to get the product out before Christmas.

I used to visit a lot of factories for work and have been to a big name dairy company that supplied a lot of supermarkets including waitrose and lidl.

Our 2x 600ml pots of Waitrose double cream purchased on the 23rd and used the same day.
not an issue with storage our aide; we also have a five star food hygiene rating in our home kitchen (registered with local authority env health). Definitely an issue with the mfr.

Nope, packaging definitely said cream. Bought the day before. It must be a production issue.

My grandfather used to work in a factory and we got weird stuff that got caught out in quality, we had all sorts of stuff. One of th e favourites was guess the yoghurt flavour, we'd get one flavour on the lid, a different one on the pot, and on occasion a third flavour in the pot. I think that this is probably what happened in the factory but it got through quality control.

HomeTheatreSystem · 26/12/2025 14:44

Same here. Tasted a bit more like crème fraîche and was ridiculously thick. There's definitely been a packaging error.

Oiledbeggs · 26/12/2025 17:02

Same here, from Waitrose - two 300ml pots dated 29th thick and sour, one dated 31st is fine.

SabbatWheel · 26/12/2025 18:52

Exactly the same here, two pots dated 29th Dec from Sainsbury’s!
Thought I’d google to see if anyone else had gone off cream and found this thread. I’m going to contact Sainsbury’s CS.

EleanorReally · 27/12/2025 06:48

actually my double cream from asda is absolutely single cream

TimeForATerf · 27/12/2025 06:56

Well mine from Morrisons was lovely. 😄

I am however invested in what went wrong with everyone’s cream.

birdling · 27/12/2025 11:45

We had the awful sour Waitrose one as well. Dated Boxing Day. Very, very thick - definitely not double cream (or very off double cream).

WonderfulSmith · 27/12/2025 12:34

Has anyone contacted the supermarkets yet?

Nopayrise · 27/12/2025 12:39

Same here but M&S! Anyone else have that?!

wishiwasacollie · 27/12/2025 16:29

I thought it was just me and tastebuds altered by too much chocolate. Waitrose double cream used to make gingerbread cream. Was weird

DogsandFlowers · 27/12/2025 17:52

I thought it was just mine! South east area

RoseDiana · 27/12/2025 19:34

Same happened to me - 600ml pot - I called Waitrose and they told me to bring in the empty packaging and they will refund - my family thought it was crème fraiche - very thick and bitter tasting.

Endoftheline97 · 28/12/2025 21:01

Just had the same and remembered I’d seen others post about it, it was Waitrose and also dated 29th December

Dairy Jesus? I don’t think so

He is the baby cheeses though.

Interesting thread now I have read it all

Just goes to show that these supermarkets just use the same factory with different packages, sounds like something has gone wrong

I have a yoghurt issue of late, thought it was just me and Im mundane enough that I was going to start a thread about it but forgot, of late I have been making a cake that needs 500g of yoghurt, every single time I use that 500g pot, its got exactly 450g in it. Im swizzed each time.

Its not a significant as your problem OP!!

ADHDdiagnosis · 28/12/2025 22:04

Ive only just found this thread and I feel left out now. Two brandy butters from marks and Spencer. Both contain brandy butter

has anyone heard back from Waitrose? What’s going on?

We had Morrisons cream too, totally fine.

Also wildly curious.

NinePoppadomsAndASaagAloo · 29/12/2025 00:57

If you’re going to complain / get a refund from any supermarket, they will need to see the packaging or at the very least they will need the date and batch code from the packaging with the exact product name and size.
We didn’t have a problem with our cream luckily but I’m fascinated to see this has happened with so many supermarket brands involved!

Report to the supermarket and Trading Standards.

I bought a box of orange juice and when I went to give it a shake to distribute the bits, I wondered if it had already been opened/leaked in transit as it seemed to be unusually swooshy inside the box. It was indeed a 1 litre size box but per the details on the outside, contained just 900 ml of juice. Technically nothing wrong with that but it was, from a consumer POV, very deceptive. Maybe in your case they've omitted to change the net weight on your yoghurt to 450?

HomeTheatreSystem · 29/12/2025 07:16

WonderfulSmith · 27/12/2025 12:34

Yes. I need to take it back and I'll get a refund. There's no plastic lid to keep the contents in the pot so anticipate quite a mess when I eventually arrive in store. When I called there was absolutely no acknowledgement that they were aware of an issue with the product. And its expiry date was yesterday so I hope that doesn't get questioned.
