How is this possible? Double cream turned out to be yoghurt!

I was making a trifle this morning and opened two pint pots of double cream from Waitrose with expiry dates of Boxing Day. Thought they seemed weirdly thick. Tasted.

Both pots contained plain yoghurt! It was definitely yoghurt rather than cream that had gone off. Or at a push, sour cream.

my question is, how is this possible?! Has this happened to anyone else? It really confused me (and I had to get emergency cream from little Tesco!)

I’m now hugely invested in someone hearing back from customer service from the supermarkets
Me too !!

limetrees32 · 26/12/2025 08:28

Interested to know if it's the same supplier to co op , Waitrose, and Lidl.
And how long before we read about it in the press.

FuckoffeeBeforeCoffee · 26/12/2025 08:31

Why am I weirdly invested in this

Nomdemare · 26/12/2025 08:46

come on Waitrose et al! really want to find out what’s going on

PersephoneParlormaid · 26/12/2025 08:50

I want to know too. My Tesco cream is fine.

I’m sure it’ll make it to the papers. Gone off turkey did.

Me three.

I'm also puzzled about posters throwing the stuff away. I’d be taking it back and complaining…

HopSpringsEternal · 26/12/2025 08:53

Ive worked in a dairies I can imagine this happening!

Nomdemare · 26/12/2025 09:00

I’ve just sent a message through to the product safety page on the Waitrose website. Its very curious.

PersephoneParlormaid · 26/12/2025 09:15

The DM is going to be all over this!

IidentifyastheGrinch · 26/12/2025 09:19

I hope you are all reporting it to the supermarkets?

Gridhopper · 26/12/2025 09:19

My Morrisons single cream was so thick the spoon stood up in it. Tasted totally fine!

isthismylifenow · 26/12/2025 09:22

There is something funky going on with cream it seems.

I am in another country and so many people here bought whipping cream, that didn't whip.

Some people were blaming temperature, but it just seems to many with the same issue to be a once off issue.

I’m in Ireland and now that you say it, I bought “Ready Whipped” cream which is handy but more expensive - it’s not the stuff in a can, comes in a carton - and was really surprised at how runny it was.
I had to whip it myself with an electric whisk.
Now I just buy unwhipped cream and whisk it up myself.

Halsall · 26/12/2025 09:50

I didn’t even buy cream or have a problem with it but I’m now so curious to know what happened here that I’m watching the thread 😂

BurntBroccoli · 26/12/2025 09:52

I’ve had double cream that was really thick before as the fat in the cream rises to the top of the carton if stood for a while. Completely fine!
If you’ve ever bought the Jersey full cream milk it’s the same.

You can definitely tell milk or cream that’s off.

Starship74 · 26/12/2025 09:55

I wonder if a key ingredient was changed for cheaper or faster production and it’s gone wrong

But it was not just thick- it also tasted like yoghurt or soured cream. It seems there may have been an error in the production process.

For those asking why I put it in the bin, it was because I couldn’t face going back to Waitrose on Christmas Eve just for that, and didn’t have space in the fridge to keep two large pots of unusable dairy product!

But what "key ingredient" would there be in double cream apart from milk? It doesn't have anything else in it (or shouldn't have)

Put it in a bag and keep it outside - it’s cold enough after all - and take it back today?

Or just take a photo of it in the bin and email their customer service.

LuerLock · 26/12/2025 10:15

I once bought a packet of cashew nuts that were labelled as Brazil nuts. They were definitely cashews. I think sometimes factory workers put the wrong packets/containers on the production line...it should get picked up by quality control, but evidently it doesn't

Can you retrieve the pot and ring the customer service number? They really should be made aware, this could indicate something seriously wrong with their food production or labelling systems.

PersephoneParlormaid · 26/12/2025 11:59

If you’ve bought it from an online shop it’s very easy to get a refund

badcream · 26/12/2025 12:39

The same happened to us. Our double cream was from Sainsbury’s. My DH opened it and threw it straight out as he said it looked unusual compared to normal and tasted sour. This has never happened before. Luckily for me I don’t eat cream so it didn’t affect me, but we had a few in the house who would have had the cream with their Christmas pudding!

smallglassbottle · 26/12/2025 13:01

I really hope this is addressed. Food quality issues can have serious health consequences. People have to be able to trust manufacturers because of allergies as well.
