My dog died today.

not Aibu but I had to have my 4year old gsd euthanised this morning. My heart feels like it’s going to just break in two. I’ve never known pain like it.

It's a brutal grief, losing a dog. My heart goes out to you, and you don't expect it to happen when they're only 4. Unlike many people, I didn't wait too long before dipping my toes back in and did some fostering for a bit which was a very rewarding experience.

I'm so sorry, i remember the pain well.

So sorry for your loss @BoldBlueZebra it's just awful, and at such a young age too. I hope your lovely dog is running free with our Buster, who we lost a few weeks back, at just turned 16. Big unmumsnetty hugs.

I’m so sorry. We lost our 14yo Shih Tzu last week and it’s just so hard trying to be cheerful when we see people when tbh we couldn’t really care less about the holidays now.

I started a MN thread about it at the time and the support we got from the total strangers on here was actually so lovely and really helped us during such an awful time.

Today marks 5 years since we lost our spaniel girlie. They're never with us long enough.

If you put the collar into a sandwich bag it'll keep their scent. Today I had a bit of a moment and took it out and could still smell her.

I dread this day-I’m so sorry this has happened. Dogs are just the best! They are the softest most wonderful animals. My heart goes out to you.

I'm so sorry for your loss. Our boy went on Christmas Eve last year and it was just devastating. You never realise how big a part of your life they are until they're gone.

Oh I’m so sorry, so young too.
I’ve lost two dearly loved pets this year: both were actually very old, but my heart was and still is, broken.

Oh I am so very sorry. It’s excruciating isn’t it? I lost my darling boy in the summer and I am still struggling with it and well up quite often. Didn’t help that he wasn’t that old and the vets were useless.

So sorry OP. My dear rabbit passed 2 years ago just before Christmas and I was heavily pregnant at the time. It’s so sad losing furry family members who only had love to give. Sending you hugs

I'm so very very sorry for your loss.

Adding to the many sympathies, it hurts like hell, no one can describe the pain but I'm sure that beautiful soul felt your love all the time they were with you. I swore I'd never have any more as I thought I couldn't love them as much but a few years on, I'm here with my beautiful boys knowing one day I'll be back to this dreadful pain, you gave your dog the best life only time will help but they wouldn't want you in pain, take one hour at a time, massive hugs to you x

Oh @BoldBlueZebra I’m genuinely at a loss when it comes to comforting words, but there is something about Christmas that makes it seem so much harder 💔 I see from your opening post that your GSD wasn’t old at all, making life all the more crueler, but would you like to share some memories of your wonderful doggo? I’m so sorry for your loss OP, losing a dog must be the worst thing… I am dreading when it’s my turn to make that decision.

So sorry. It is painful, but even though they had a relatively short life you will have memories to cherish, which will help as time goes on.

I’m so sorry.. it’s awful. We lost our girl 3.5yrs ago, I’ve had her collar sitting around, unable to throw it away and just a few weeks ago came across this frame for it- it’s beautiful and I love that her collar can be displayed now. My best little girl went earlier this year. I’m too sad to quantify it- it gives me a drag in my lungs that hurts.
Since then my brother and one of my best friends have died (one expected one literally just dropped dead - both were in their 40’s.)
I miss my little girl every minute of every day - she was always here being a dick and we are currently looking after our dead friends boy dog. I can’t say we have inherited him - but having a dog in our home again feels right, despite me swearing she was our last.
I am so sorry for you - I’m still so sorry for us - and now we have a little dog we’d never have picked breed wise - but I think we were sent him to help us over our loss. I wish you comfort and lots of unexpected unconditional puppy love that comes somewhere out of left field to heal you ❤️
