Will everyone please STOP the extremely tone deaf 'Christmas Fridge' threads

I see these multiple threads every single year and they drive me bonkers. The four days leading up to Christmas Day my feed is inundated with all the stuffed fridges, it's a complete and utter disgrace. Not just a few posters but sometimes literally hundreds of you all joining in with these enormous overflowing fridges, it's barbaric and in incredibly poor taste. I have already seen THREE seperate fridge threads today alone, it's scandalous... please people just think about what you are doing by jumping on this bandwagon. Now I take this a bit personally and here is why.... There are people in this world who are starving and many families, mine included, are having to rely on food banks this year just to keep our children fed. As in dippy eggs and soldiers on Xmas eve. Many of us are in a dire state with finances and the pressures of Xmas. The fridge threads are incredibly upsetting and triggering. By all means have a nice christmas dinner with all the trimmings but why post it and rub it in the faces of those less fortunate? They will be very lucky to scrape together a very basic dinner for the family this year?

I so look forward to seeing everybody's gluttonous greed in full swing, fridges stuffed full of obscene amounts of food and alcohol that will most likely go to waste. (And waistlines. The greed of Christmas it's all totally out of control and I despair)
All the cheese boards, cheesecakes, cheeselets, and on and on and on.
Honestly I wish MNHQ would BAN the threads, they cause many people anguish and distress.
It is one day so please keep some perspective or even better, pop a selection pack or some small treats in a collection trolley to help all the fantastic homeless charities and food banks ensure more people can enjoy a sweet treat on christmas day.

(Thanks to my local foodbank and those who kindly donated, at least me and my children have a lovely box of celebrations that I will bring out on Christmas Day for us) 🙂

What are you on about, I've never seen one post about people's fridges or contents.

And even if there were loads of these posts, which there aren't, why shouldn't people be allowed to show things that they are excited about because you're in a less fortunate position? Should we also not show our holidays, our kids, our engagement rings????

But there are. Every year. A simple search would have confirmed that for you.

ChocolateCinderToffee · 21/12/2025 22:50

I’m sorry you’re having a tough time, OP and I hope 2026 is better for you. I’m embarrassed by how many nasty replies are on this thread.

TimePutASpellOnYou · 21/12/2025 22:50

Also, if you’re struggling for money so much, you probably should prioritise food over your invisalign/sure smile orthodontic treatment that you’re considering. 😉

Perimenoanti · 21/12/2025 22:45

You made it sound as if these threads have thousands of replies and photos.

They do. Also people saying they will be back later this week to update their bulging fridges after the 'big shop'.

Also I am now personally being insulted on one of the fridge threads. My very point proven that these sort of people have no consideration for those less fortunate.

I imagine those who have no issues with a fridge thread are also less likely to have issues with a present pile thread.

I wouldn't post pictures in either one but as I said, would simply just ignore them.

Yeah, it’s just that overall tone of the threads is entirely different. A large present pile thread immediately gets people saying how disgusting it is, how vulgar, the kids will be spoilt brats etc but fridge threads tend to get people just replying with their own photos. It was just an idle musing about the difference really, I’m not actually that bothered. It just struck me that it seems like there’s a different attitude to kids being ‘spoilt’ compared to adults essentially spoiling themselves.
I avoid both types of threads too.

pahhdgaa · 21/12/2025 22:51

Aww it’s not Christmas until you get the READ THE ROOM thread! Wine

Well good for you Pollyanna.

The OP doesn’t feel that way.

News flash: if you don’t like what SHE has to say, you don’t have to post- you could just hide the thread 🤷‍♀️

Bit of a weird response. 😕 The OP posted on AIBU, TELLING everyone to stop posting what they have in their fridge threads. People have every right to say 'actually NO, and YOU can hide the threads!!!' Saying people can hide THIS thread if they don't like what the OP is saying is batshit. 😆

GLITCH made me post 3 times! 😬

WearyAuldWumman · 21/12/2025 22:54

I hadn't seen them. [ETA I've now seen the links posted, but haven't opened them up.]

There are some threads that are triggering to me - so I avoid them. I'm sorry that you're in dire straits @TempNameForObviousReasons . It can't be easy, but your situation isn't unusual.

I don't have any immediate family now, so I find myself getting a twinge (or much more than a twinge) when others talk about having Christmas day with their family. That's life, unfortunately.

pinkstripeycat · 21/12/2025 22:54

What’s wrong with eggs and soldiers on any day, let alone Xmas eve? Perfectly normal. We only ever have a basic roast on Xmas day with a chicken. I’ve never done extra anything or loads and loads of meat, puddings etc. The crackers we have I bought 8 years ago in the sales for 50p a box. 10
boxes, 12 crackers in each.

whoosit · 21/12/2025 22:54

You could say this about anything- holidays - nice family time - presents - even the what are you doing today threads. Just enjoy what you have and don't begrudge what others do. I know there are many people on here with way more money, more luxuries, much better family situations and more comfortable lives than me but this is a place for everyone. I'm sorry you're struggling can you find a food bank near you? They often have lots left over on Christmas eve I've used them myself before.

Teenagerantruns · 21/12/2025 22:54

My fridge is always full when l do my on-line shop every 2 weeks. To be honest its full now, but maybe with different stuff for Christmas week.
We both not working living on a pension and attendance allowance, been a shit year why shouldn't l have a full fridge?

I wonder if it's at least partly because the fridge thread is almost like a mumsnet tradition now? If you search it, it seems to go back years and years whereas the present pile thread is a social media traditional overall but not really a mumsnet thing?

Sugarnspicenallthingsnaice · 21/12/2025 22:55

I get your point about overconsumption, but I have never seen one of these threads.

Then again I haven't added the Christmas topic to my feed, and if I saw anything about Christmas fridges in Active I wouldn't click on it.

Again, I do understand what you're trying to say but from my POV all your post has done is draw my attention to the subject, unfortunately.

Where? There aren't any personal insults on the three you've linked.

Livingthebestlife · 21/12/2025 22:56

Not many pictures 😞😞😞 the 3 links say fridge in them and 2 say Christmas fridge. Prob best not to open the thread.

SqishySqashmas · 21/12/2025 22:57

I was chatting to someone about over excessive Christmas food the other day and thinking back to my childhood Christmases where it was literally Christmas Dinner and maybe ham, homemade Christmas cake...Cheeseboards weren't even a thing then - when did they even become a thing???

At my grandparents it was pretty similar: Each grandchild got a small bag of chocolate balls, nothing for the grown ups. Again, simple Christmas dinner, , homemade Chrismas pud and Christmas cake, a few homemade mince pies and a box of Milk Tray.

And this wasn't for lack of money, it was just a pretty normal Christmas I think.

When did it all get so excessive and gluttonous? The food? The presents? And I can't bear to to think of how many crappy acrylic/polyester unwanted Christmas jumpers end up in landfill.

I'm so fed up of the build-up (I work in Education), it's all so over the top and very few are even practicing Christians anyway.

I've scaled it right back this year. I feel like Christmas has lost it's magic.

Safxxx · 21/12/2025 22:57

I'm sorry you're going through this hardship, I hope you're situation changes soon and you're able to provide for yourself and your kids. But please don't get bitter over someone else's fridges, as it triggers you then stop opening them kind of posts...there's plenty more threads to go through.

TimePutASpellOnYou · 21/12/2025 22:57

And I just realised where I’d seen your name. I reported a really nasty post you made on a previous thread to a woman who was suffering with anxiety. It’s been deleted. So you think it’s ok to go around saying horrible things to people but then expect others not to post photos of their fridge because it upsets you! 🤣

As I said previously, prioritise food over your Invisalign treatment and you’ll be able to buy more food.
