lighthearted!

Every year for my birthday & christmas my parents buy me perfume & slippers. Nothing else just those two items to the point I have ten pairs of slippers I have never worn and twelve boxes of perfume
never opened - always the same perfume too.

I don’t mean to sound ungrateful but it’s at that point where I don’t even want to open them as I know what they are. im not even a big slippers or perfume fan so I am a bit perplexed why its always the same thing. 😂

AIBU to ask them not to give me gifts in the future and to save their money? I dont want to seem ungrateful but it seems like such a waste!
Anyone else get the exact same gifts every birthday/xmas?

Do you have a super polite relationship with them? Surely your mum is one person you can laugh with and tell them straight without feeling like you're offending them.
My MIL gets socks for everyone every year and we all just roll our eyes with a wooowww thanks, just what I needed then everyone bursts out laughing including her. I can't imagine not having honest, direct but lighthearted and fun conversations with parents.

Laughed at this. In my 20’s when my mum got socks I did the “god sake, again?!” Now in my 30’s and she doesn’t get me them we joke as I say “could really do with my annual sock stash, where is it?!?” 😂

As a kid I had an apple and orange in my stocking and complained, Santa didn’t do it the following year. “Why is he giving me an orange? I don’t eat oranges!”

I do understand op.
However my lovely nan always bought everyone slippers for Christmas, it became a family joke. The year she died I didn’t receive any slippers 🥹I cannot express how poignant it was. I really felt it and missed receiving the slippers.
I know my post probably isn’t helpful but I just wanted to highlight another side.

Sell them on Vinted and buy yourself something you want

LoveWine123 · 20/12/2025 16:48

You should start regifting them to her 😆

Be honest and tell her no more, it’s a complete waste. I told my dm years ago no more gifts I have to keep. I have nowhere to display eg the carved wooden cross eyed cat looking at its own bum, plus I have dogs, who, oh dear, chewed the wooden cat. She used to get me large plastic jewellery from her holidays too, just stuff I wouldn’t ever wear and like most people, I am very particular about jewellery/clothes/everything!

This.
Surely if you can be honest with someone it would be your parents.
Just say I have loads of that now … can you get me this please 🤷🏻‍♀️

Hmm no parents are often the last people you would be honest with. Someone upthread said do you parents not know you or like you, nope to the first, not sure to the second. It's a moot point as I get £30 in a card, used to be £40.
