Crumpets - savoury or sweet?!

Wherestheteenguide · 07/12/2025 18:09

Settle an argument between DH and I.
Crumpets are for butter/marmite
English muffins are for jam

Or vice versa?
Aibu - crumpets are sweet
Aibnu - crumpets are savoury

The Marmite person is correct.
All other toppings are wrong.

murasaki · 07/12/2025 18:12

I'm cheese rather than marmite, but definitely savoury.

salt crystal butter is the best topping. With a wedge of brie on the side.

bedtimestories · 07/12/2025 18:13

Either. I have butter or chocolate spread 😋

Tiredofwhataboutery · 07/12/2025 18:14

I like marmite the kids have peanut butter and honey. I think crumpets cross the sweet/ savoury divide and can be used for either.

murasaki · 07/12/2025 18:15

Pate is also nice on crumpets. With butter underneath, obviously.

Chinsupmeloves · 07/12/2025 18:16

Both depending on what you fancy at that moment.

CoheedandCambria · 07/12/2025 18:16

Either sweet or savoury
But savoury for me = cheese not Marmite

K0OLA1D · 07/12/2025 18:17

Both.

Jam, beans, poached egg, cheese, marmite or just butter.

I love crumpets

museumum · 07/12/2025 18:17

Both!
Slivers of strong cheddar and Nutella are both fantastic on crumpets (not together obviously)

Whoevenarethey · 07/12/2025 18:18

Either depending on mood!

unfairwork · 07/12/2025 18:19

I like to boil eggs and dip the crumpets in them.

My fried deep fries crumpets and eats them with curry.

OldBeyondMyYears · 07/12/2025 18:21

Butter on hot (well done…not flaccid!) crumpets is the only proper way OP 😂

uhtredofbattenberg · 07/12/2025 18:22

Definitely not marmite - and I like marmite. But it's for toast only.

Crumpets need choc spread, or lemon curd or jam.

JellyBabyToManual · 07/12/2025 18:23

Butter on both. Marmite on one. Honey on the other.

goodthinking99 · 07/12/2025 18:25

A thick layer of cream cheese and then apricot jam. Oh, I love crumpets! So cheap, so underrated.

tilypu · 07/12/2025 18:25

Most bread is neutral in the sweet/savoury scale.

Add whatever you like best. You are both equally right and wrong.

Deep frying a crumpet sounds interesting.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 07/12/2025 18:25

Just butter, thanks.

Isittimeformynapyet · 07/12/2025 18:27

Cheese on one, honey on the other.

budgiegirl · 07/12/2025 18:29

Crumpets with butter, perhaps jam, but never savoury.
English muffins always savoury, such as bacon, eggs, sausages, Eggs Benedict.

Sirzy · 07/12/2025 18:30

I’m in the anything but butter is wrong camp

ZzzMarchhare · 07/12/2025 18:32

I always have savoury and sweet- 2 butter and marmite, 1 jam. Obviously eat the savoury first!
agree with well done- on the grill, if in a toaster takes at least 3 pop ups!

Talipesmum · 07/12/2025 18:34

Both. This is stupid. Like asking if toast is sweet or savoury. Love both options. Marmite and butter, or honey and butter. Or chocolate spread, jam, cheese. Separately. All with butter. Butter is important.

TrickyD · 07/12/2025 18:36

Every morning while I am in bed DH brings me a crumpet (though we call them pikelets) with butter and Marmite. Plus coffee. The cat joins me and gets little buttery crumbs and licks the plate afterwards. A good start to the day and I won’t consider LTB just yet.
