Crumpets - savoury or sweet?!

Wherestheteenguide · 07/12/2025 18:09

Settle an argument between DH and I.
Crumpets are for butter/marmite
English muffins are for jam

Or vice versa?
Aibu - crumpets are sweet
Aibnu - crumpets are savoury

Cheese and marmite on a crumpet is the most superior end to a Sunday afternoon you can possibly ever have.

bridgetreilly · 07/12/2025 18:43

They are both fancy types of bread, so can be either. I like honey and cheese (separately, not at the same time) on crumpets, and eggs and honey (also separately) on muffins.

JaceLancs · 07/12/2025 18:48

Butter and melted cheddar here
DP also adds baked beans

LankylegsFromOz · 07/12/2025 18:52

Vegemite, not marmite. And on both 😋

I'm cheese rather than marmite, but definitely savoury.

Marmite and cheese, of course

Fdsew · 07/12/2025 18:55

Both.
First two butter and cheese.
Second two butter and a conserve or jelly.
Divine.
I try not to buy them.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 07/12/2025 18:57

Both.

I love crumpets with:

  • butter and marmite
  • butter and honey
  • butter marmite and a poached egg
  • butter and jam/curd
  • just lashings of butter.
Sadly now I have type 2 diabetes, I don’t get to eat crumpets any more.
carbonelthecat · 07/12/2025 19:00

Crumpets are the perfect vehicle for butter.

And whatever also goes with butter. So cheese, marmite, honey etc etc

ExquisiteDecor · 07/12/2025 19:06

I was with you till you said english muffins are for jam, no way. Both are strictly savoury. Eggs, marmite, cheese, butter, those are the permitted toppings.

ThreeB · 07/12/2025 19:40

crumpets are absolutely for both
pesto and cheese win on savoury
jam stuffed doughnut crumpets win for sweet

English Muffins are only for bacon, egg and cheese slice sandwiches

CoastalCalm · 07/12/2025 19:41

One of each usually , butter and salt or marmite then honey and salt

Larymarylary · 07/12/2025 19:43

Just butter.

Meerkatmanor4 · 07/12/2025 19:45

Peanut Butter on one with a cup of tea.

Butter and Marmalade on one with a cup of coffee.

TTCbabynumber22025 · 07/12/2025 19:47

Both obviously. Same with English muffins. They’re both just fancy toast

Vaguelyclassical · 07/12/2025 19:58

Sirzy · 07/12/2025 18:30

I’m in the anything but butter is wrong camp

Along with me!

user2848502016 · 07/12/2025 20:49

I like mine with butter and raspberry jam

Hollowvoice · 07/12/2025 20:53

Savoury for me.
Just butter
Or also melted cheese
Or fried egg

ArcticGrass · 07/12/2025 20:55

Savoury. But crumpets jus5 don’t taste the same any more….

tobee · 07/12/2025 20:56

Baked beans and bacon and bacon melted bacon fat from the pan. Best cure for a hangover.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 07/12/2025 20:56

You're absolutely wrong.

Crumpets are for salted butter, marmite, really strong cheddar and hot sauce.

English muffins are for bacon (or sausagemeat), fried egg and cheese. And some hot sauce.

BakedAlaskaInMyTummy · 07/12/2025 21:04

Banana and crunchy peanut butter is lovely. But on the whole, prefer marmite and salted butter

FancyCatSlave · 07/12/2025 21:07

Crumpets themselves are like bread- can be used for savoury or sweet. I am firmly in the butter and marmite camp, or just butter. But I don’t have a sweet tooth.
DD likes them with honey which is all manner of wrong.

mamaduckbone · 07/12/2025 21:33

Just salted butter takes some beating, but I would also go marmite. Definitely not jam, honey at a push.

EuroTour · 07/12/2025 21:50

Bovril is much better than marmite

Waitingfordoggo · 07/12/2025 21:51

Marmite and sometimes cheese too. But the same on an English muffin. Jam is for scones and rice pudding.
