Crumpets - savoury or sweet?!

Wherestheteenguide · 07/12/2025 18:09

Settle an argument between DH and I.
Crumpets are for butter/marmite
English muffins are for jam

Or vice versa?
Aibu - crumpets are sweet
Aibnu - crumpets are savoury

Never had a crumpet with a sweet topping. Can't imagine it. In fact, before about two years ago I'd never had one with anything other than butter!

I also wouldn't have a sweet topping with an English muffin if I'm honest. Just...doesn't seem right.

Toasted until crispy on the outside with lashings if salted butter. It's the only way for me. (You can tell I love them haha)

MsGinaLinetti · 08/12/2025 09:13

Both

You are both very unreasonable to not enjoy crumpets in all their forms.

I have them with cheese and beans for a quick lunch. Or with Nutella for pudding. Probs not in the same meal tho.

i have a freezer full of fancy Jones Crumpets, they do double cheese and cheese and chives ones as well as the plain and the dark chocolate filled ones I am currently pairing with my Bonne Maman jam advent calendar. So both is the answer. Muffins, meh, whatever, not enough butter holes.

I didn’t even consider savoury?!

Always been better and jam. Sometimes yoghurt and berries.

but cheese?! On a crumpet?!

Do these same rules apply to hot cross buns?

It all seems very clandestine…

Lulu1919 · 08/12/2025 18:26

Butter
Marmite
Peanut butter
Only things I'll put on a crumpet although my husband likes melted cheese
So I think Savoury

Hot cross buns definitely improve with salted butter and strong cheese inside - preferably cold cheddar cut about 4mm thick, whilst the bun is toasted, crispy and hot (buns also must have lots of spices and fruit in them, none of this bland supermarket ersatz HXB nonsense).

Wigtopia · 08/12/2025 18:53

Marmite followed by jam or peanut butter one for “dessert”

NormasArse · 08/12/2025 18:55

Marmite, then cheese!

AgnesMcDoo · 08/12/2025 18:55

Butter
butter and jam
honey
chocolate spread

are the only acceptable toppings on a crumpet

muffins could have butter and bacon

NormasArse · 08/12/2025 18:55

English muffins are for poached eggs.

Thick white toast (cut, not pre-sliced) is for jam.

Fridgemanageress · 08/12/2025 18:56

Crumpets are delicious with butter and a fried egg/poached egg/scrambled egg on top and three bits of asparagus and a splodge of burger sauce!

just with butter

with butter and jam

with butter and peanut butter

let’s face it, the list is endless, if you don’t have the reduced crumpets overflowing out of your freezer you are not a lover of crumpet!

Crikeyalmighty · 08/12/2025 18:58

On Xmas day I dry fry raspberries and blueberries with cinnamon powder till they wilt and stick on top of crumpets with large dollop of Fage 5% Greek yoghurt - it’s a hairy bikers diet one and is delicious and makes your kitchen smell amazing

pouletvous · 08/12/2025 19:01

Peanut butter! Or plain butter

Cappie73 · 08/12/2025 19:02

I’m the only person I know who doesn’t like them, I find the texture odd

Breltrin · 08/12/2025 19:07

Savoury with grated cheddar. Surely
