Trafalgar Square Christmas tree embarrassment

Thanks to Norway for the lovely Christmas tree in Trafalgar Square but seriously, whoever decorated it needs to think again as it’s abysmal. Very little effort and I give it 0 out of 10 for decoration.

I suggest you look up the history and why it's decorated this way. Pop on to X or TikTok and you will see plenty of this.

Buggabootwo · 06/12/2025 10:04

Just about to say the same. It’s decorated that way for an important and meaningful reason.

The Covent Garden one is lovely and hugely sparkly and about 5 minutes walk away.

DuchessDandelion · 06/12/2025 10:05

I think it looks beautiful. It's a source of pride and not embarrassment.

JudgeBread · 06/12/2025 10:11

The tree is a symbol of friendship and allegiance between Britain and Norway during WW2, we decorate it that way because it's the traditional Norwegian way to hang Christmas lights - it's more than just a tree with lights, it's symbolic and special and speaks of a long and happy tradition between us and another country.

Decorate your own tree however you like, leave Trafalgar alone, he's lovely in all his wonky, weirdly lit glory.

TheChosenTwo · 06/12/2025 10:14

I think it looks simple and quite elegant even though my personal preference my my tree at home is far more chaotic and colourful.

Sahara123 · 06/12/2025 10:15

Didn’t Blue Peter used to do an item on the tree being delivered to London maybe 60’s /70’s? I used to love that .

PandoraSocks · 06/12/2025 10:16

Someone posts this complaint every year. Is is a grand old MN tradition!

Oh dear OP it would seem you have embarrassed yourself.

SamphiretheTervosaur · 06/12/2025 10:18

80 years

It has been decorated like that for 80 years

There are perfectly good reasons why

And still, every sodding year, some muppet decries it because they haven't bothered to look it up and think every country has the same Victorian style of Christmas decoration

Maybe next year will be different

sashagabadon · 06/12/2025 10:19

It’s decorated that way every year for many years and every year people complain about the way it is decorated. One of my seasonal highlights. Last few years there had also been complaints about the tree itself and I go and look and about two years ago I agree it was very lopsided and the complainants had a point

The tree is a 50-60 year old Norwegian spruce, and is decorated in the traditional Norwegian way to look as it would have done in the 1940s. Could we get a more full and “perfect” tree locally and decorate it with modern fancies to look picture-perfect and photogenic? Absolutely, but the history of why another nation spends so much effort getting a tree like this to us every year is phenomenal, it isn’t intended to be an Instagram showstopper.

Either that or those Norwegian tricksters are sniggering that we put this thing up and string it with lights as we do because we are too polite to query it.

Shufflebumnessie · 06/12/2025 10:30

I think it looks lovely. It's a beautiful gift of friendship and gratitude.

ProfessorInkling · 06/12/2025 10:31

I love it. I can't wait to go for a wander and see it up close.

RapunzelHadExtensions · 06/12/2025 10:34

Awks.

Ginmonkeyagain · 06/12/2025 10:34

Leave our lovely old fashioned wonky tree alone. Its so much more than Christmas decorations, it's a lovely and heartfelt gesture of friendship from Norway.

KillYourTV · 06/12/2025 10:34

Mate.... 🙈

Bumcake · 06/12/2025 10:36

Meaningless post without a picture.

gogomomo2 · 06/12/2025 10:37

I like it, it’s always like that, simple and classy. I hate coloured lights and tinsel myself

NetZeroZealot · 06/12/2025 10:38

I think it’s understated & classy.

NetZeroZealot · 06/12/2025 10:38

Unlike the OP.

TofuEater · 06/12/2025 10:38

Well, at least you didn't say it's because Sadiq wants to ban Christmas

Syida · 06/12/2025 10:39

I know why it's decorated like that but I think it looks awful.

I believe they did. It was always a big event ❤️
