Trafalgar Square Christmas tree embarrassment

Thanks to Norway for the lovely Christmas tree in Trafalgar Square but seriously, whoever decorated it needs to think again as it’s abysmal. Very little effort and I give it 0 out of 10 for decoration.

Mate.... 🙈

😂

Catpiece · 06/12/2025 10:52

The tree isn’t meant to be flashy. Read the explanations other posters have given

Meaningless post without a picture.

Meaningless anyway, given the explanation for the decorating style.

Coffeeishot · 06/12/2025 10:53

Oh op i never say this, but im embarrassed for you,

Figgygal · 06/12/2025 10:57

Because of its history you're clearly not allowed to criticise it's aesthetics
I saw it Tuesday pre lights and it's certainly a bit limp you want a nice tree get to covent garden

Yes. Because it has meaning beyond the trite commercialism of Christmas

ChristmasinBrighton · 06/12/2025 11:02

Oh @Linenpickle you could have googled it before making a holy show of yourself!

snoooze · 06/12/2025 11:03

OP please post a photo of your tree, would love to see a 10/10 decorated tree to your standard!

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 06/12/2025 11:05

Has anyone got a photo? For those of us who live 300 miles away?

Monty34 · 06/12/2025 11:05

I am so pleased the Norwegians still continue to send a tree to us out of remembrance and thanks for our support and allegiance to them in WW2.
Beautiful tree. Thank you Norway.

YourSnifferDogsAreShite · 06/12/2025 11:05

Jesus I’m Irish and I know the story of this Christmas tree and why it exists and why it is decorated like that. How do you not know?! Learn your history ffs. How embarrassing.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 06/12/2025 11:06

This lovely gesture reminds me of ‘The Shetland Bus’ - the story of which was related to me and DM during a trip to the Shetlands. Under cover of night (to avoid German bombers) and often in winter, relatively small boats crossed the wild and terribly dangerous North Sea, bringing people who’d have been targeted, and almost certainly killed, by the Nazi invaders, from Norway to the relative safety of the Shetland Isles.

Bambamhoohoo · 06/12/2025 11:09

I never understand why people say this. What do you expect the government to do, say “sorry Norway but that’s a bit shit- take it back ”

how rude and dismissive of our rich history with a dear ally.

I’d be worried that Norway will just thinking “fuck this” and end the tradition, since so many people whinge about it every year. It’s so rude.

A crowd takes pictures of the Christmas tree in Trafalgar Square, which glimmers with small fairy lights.

RudolphTheReindeer · 06/12/2025 11:11

Looks fine to me

AmIthatSpringy · 06/12/2025 11:11

I think the only embarrassing thing is your post

Coffeeishot · 06/12/2025 11:12

I think thats lovely, maybe the op.want a giant bauble or 2 on it !

Sevenwondersofthewoo · 06/12/2025 11:15

This is like the tiktoker embarrassing herself saying it’s naff not understanding the history behind it all and made her apologies.

it can only have these lights on and not covered in baubles cos it would collapse and it’s Norwegian custom done.

NigelFaragesFakeRoarofLaughter · 06/12/2025 11:15

Notonthestairs · 06/12/2025 10:44

It’s decorated the same each year for a reason!
I thought we loved our traditions!

Story behind the tree
https://www.historic-uk.com/HistoryUK/HistoryofBritain/Trafalgar-Square-Christmas-Tree/

Ohh! Thank you @Notonthestairs .

Of course I know the story of the postwar trees, but I'd never heard about the first tree during wartime "liberated" from occupied Norway and brought to King Haakon in Britain!

That's amazing!

OutsideOfComfortable · 06/12/2025 11:16

It's beautiful!

Loadsapandas · 06/12/2025 11:16

Norway need to fuck us off with this tree, we embarrass ourselves every fucking year.

can you imagine is the mums net post?

OP: I send a tree to a mate as thanks and friendship in helping me out a few decades ago, but every year her family bitch and moan that my tree is shit.

Should I still send it or stop the tradition.

mumsnet in unison: cancel the cheque tree

SerendipityJane · 06/12/2025 11:17

PandoraSocks · 06/12/2025 10:16

Someone posts this complaint every year. Is is a grand old MN tradition!

It's beginning to feel a lot like Christmas.

YesterdaysFuture · 06/12/2025 11:18

It's amazing how we shouldn't let tradition get in the way of scrapping trial by jury, but a poorly decorated tree must be kept that way because of "tradition".

Don't think anyone thinks it looks good and the tourists are never impressed with it either.

QuestionableMouse · 06/12/2025 11:18

The lack of education or even willingness to educate oneself in this country is what's embarrassing.
