Trafalgar Square Christmas tree embarrassment

Thanks to Norway for the lovely Christmas tree in Trafalgar Square but seriously, whoever decorated it needs to think again as it’s abysmal. Very little effort and I give it 0 out of 10 for decoration.

Also, thank you Norway! Much appreciated!

It's amazing how we shouldn't let tradition get in the way of scrapping trial by jury, but a poorly decorated tree must be kept that way because of "tradition".

Don't think anyone thinks it looks good and the tourists are never impressed with it either.

Who cares about tourists!?! Half of them are probably the nationalities who were responsible for invading Norway. It’s between us land the Norwegians and who cares what anyone else thinks

Livelovebehappy · 06/12/2025 11:20

I’m guessing you visited as a tourist OP and don’t actually live in London? I used to live in London and know the history. I think it’s lovely. But I can see if you have no connection with London, then it’s easy to think how you do.

stayok · 06/12/2025 11:21

I think it looks lovely, as well as being an important marker of history. Not everything has to be a massive tack-fest.

Shall I send over a chiropractor to treat the strain that stretch must have caused?

Agree. London doesn’t exist just to keep tourists happy…I hardly think someone will refuse to return to London again because they didn’t like the tree in Trafalgar Square…..

NigelFaragesFakeRoarofLaughter · 06/12/2025 11:15

Ohh! Thank you @Notonthestairs .

Of course I know the story of the postwar trees, but I'd never heard about the first tree during wartime "liberated" from occupied Norway and brought to King Haakon in Britain!

That's amazing!

It’s a great bit of history - the bravery of those involved and collaboration between the UK & Norway with a dash of good humour and generosity (re the Savoy dinner as well as the tree).

It’s one of my favourite events of hope and collaboration from WW2 as well. I think we were honourable and right and I’m glad the Norwegians are equally honourable to remember our support and care.

This is like the tiktoker embarrassing herself saying it’s naff not understanding the history behind it all and made her apologies.

it can only have these lights on and not covered in baubles cos it would collapse and it’s Norwegian custom done.

OP probably ran here from TikTok to blindly share something they know fuck all about.

I don’t think there is much wrong with not knowing things, because m we can always learn. A good lesson here would be to do a wee google before posting, but like I say, probably raced from TikTok to make this thread.

PistachioTiramisu · 06/12/2025 11:24

I think it looks lovely - elegant and understated. I suppose OP would rather it had garish coloured lights, naff decorations and an inflatable Father Christmas on the top!

MrsSkylerWhite · 06/12/2025 11:25

Just googled. Cant see what your problem is? Simple and elegant. Would you prefer grinches and flashing lights?

Has anyone got a photo? For those of us who live 300 miles away?

Taken yesterday.

I don’t know how many more times it can be said.

The tree is a gift from Norway as has been tradition for 85 years now. It is decorated in the traditional Norwegian style. If you want a big glitzy tree there are multiple trees all over London you can go and see.

LeedsLoiner · 06/12/2025 11:30

I hope all the churches around England are ready for the massive increase in attendance this year judging by the number of posts on social media about how this country needs to have “a proper British Christian Christmas” as I presume all the “”The Muslamics are cancelling Christmas” brigade will actually attend a Christmas service rather than sit in their pyjamas on Christmas Day!

Thing is OP did know. She even says in her post- thanks Norway but… you don’t even need to know the history to imagine how rude it would be for the British government to reject a tree that’s a gift.

Sadly i suspect in 20 years this actually will be the case, a mix of facism and American far right influence, and the uk will be back in the dark ages, dictated to by a load of corrupt child sex offenders.

Can’t imagine that’ll happen. I’ve seen multiple posts on TikTok claiming this has happened due to “the Muslims” and when the comments explain they say that’s no reason at all.

Over40Overdating · 06/12/2025 11:39

Why are so many people posting about this this year? Seasonal facebook outrageitis.

@Linenpickle At best you’re demonstrating a moronic lack of understanding of the history of the tree, at worst you’re a vapid attention seeker who thinks everyone has the same lack of taste as you. Should we ask the Norwegians to supply us with the tiktok shop plastic tat special in shades of grey?

MaggieBsBoat · 06/12/2025 11:39

Sad that @Linenpickle hasn’t been back to own her folly!

Even if you were as dense as the OP - would you? I would be quickly name-changing never to be seen again!

Andepeda · 06/12/2025 11:40

It has not always been lit up the way it is now, it used to have a more traditional lighting arrangement. I know this because my office window overlooked it. I think it's probably more convenient to have the long vertical strands rather than having to go round and round at that height.

PigglyWigglyOhYeah · 06/12/2025 11:42

Quite.

Clafoutie · 06/12/2025 11:44

Not sure that a pile on to the OP is necessary. People make mistakes or don’t know things, but people sure love to point it out.🙄

I do hope not. I don’t want ‘going to church’ to be the new ‘racist flag flying’ thing, with morons painting ‘I went to church’ on roundabouts and everyone who goes to church suddenly being branded as racist twats.

Snoff · 06/12/2025 11:45

Yes! Tusen takk, Norge!

(Though I wouldn't be sad if we brought back the lametta from the 1947 tree...)
