To think we should have the option to have the laughing emoji on our threads

Just that. Why can't we have an option to have the laughing emoji's on if we want and off if we don't?

I've some really funny ( not bitchy, just genuinely funny ) comments lately. I miss being able to laugh react to ones that amused me

OP posts:

Jason Sudeikis Yes GIF by Apple TV+

Now this is an idea @mumsnet

Mum2Fergus · 04/12/2025 19:49

Now this is an idea @mumsnet

I personally then reply to their comment to say it made me laugh or that I wished we still had the laughing emoji..... so it just takes up room in the thread 😅 it would be easier to just laugh react

I wonder if mumsnet could make it so we could choose to have it on or off like they do with polls or even have it so every user could choose whether their posts could be reacted to with the laugh emoji or not

I still can't believe that we live in a world where it had to be removed.

It's an emoji ffs!

CandyCayne · 04/12/2025 20:23

Just make the emojis public is what I say.

That way if anyone is going to use them in a nasty manner, we can all see them.

Edited

That would work.

If someone wants to be a twat, let them fly that flag high.

A lot of posters are against public emojis 'in case it turns into a popularity contest' 🙄

We're all adults.

We're all anonymous.

It's just the internet and it really doesn't matter if someone gets more likes than you.

EchoedSilence · 04/12/2025 20:37

It's ridiculous that they took it away in the first place.

AromanticSpices · 04/12/2025 20:39

If you haven't read any of the many threads about why the reaction symbol was removed, please do so to avoid rehashing the same old posts for the 100th time.

Obviously if you're not actually interested in the reasons and just want to let everyone know what you think based on what you've guessed then feel free to do that.

And what if they have read the threads and do know the reasons but still disagree?

My personal opinion is that it should be brought back but made public.

Other opinions may vary, which is what chat forums are all about 🤷‍♂️

Suednymph · 04/12/2025 21:00

I so miss the laughing emoji. I vote bring it back. I also vote turning off ANY quoting of the original posters opening post on any thread.

At least they've collapsed the original post when it's quoted now, so you only see the first line or so.

BIWI · 04/12/2025 21:02

Hard ‘no’. Unfortunately there were too many nasty posters who took advantage of the reactions being private, to mock and humiliate other posters.

There have been so many threads recently about how horrible Mumsnet is becoming - acknowledged by @JustineMumsnet - and the laugh reaction only fuelled the nasty posters.

But surely that's a reason for MNHQ to make it so posters can turn the reactions off, which is what the OP is advocating for?

Or to make them public, so whoever is being nasty can be seen by all.

Modern MN at its finest, a tiny vocal minority with manufactured grievances shouting loud enough to get the laugh emoji removed from everyone instead of just using a report button.

EchoedSilence · 04/12/2025 21:07

It was the head girls of MN who got it removed.

Because posters were using it to mock and belittle.

I had a few from a particular poster. It felt horrible.

Isayitasitis · 04/12/2025 21:09

Absolutely. But people are crying over it being used as a bullying tool as if you can't do it on Facebook or other social media.

People online are just that. People all hiding behind anonymity including myself. The laugh emoji means eff all to me.

It would be good then if MNHQ brought it back but made it so posters can turn it off.

BIWI · 04/12/2025 21:11

But how would it work if you had it turned on? That would mean you’d be free to belittle and humiliate other posters?

Definitely not.

So clearly you’re someone who wants to be free to mock other posters?

MNHQ were very clear that they’d been monitoring how the laugh reaction was being used for quite some time. So it definitely wasn’t a minority of people who had an issue with it.

BIWI · 04/12/2025 21:14

EchoedSilence · 04/12/2025 21:07

It was the head girls of MN who got it removed.

No it wasn’t. It was via monitoring that MNHQ were doing that led to it being removed.

Such a snide post. Are you someone who wants to be able to mock and humiliate other posters?

No, I think the OP means you could turn it off so people can't react to your posts.

Or turn off individual reactions so they can't laugh react if you won't want them to.

No I'm just fed up of MNHQ listening to the chosen few.

I guess I just don't understand.

I just couldn't take that much meaning from an emoji or be that vested in what anyone on an forum thinks of my posts.

How do people deal with the big stuff in life if an emoji causes that much difficulty? I just cannot comprehend it being such an issue.
