To think we should have the option to have the laughing emoji on our threads

Petpeeveoftheday · 04/12/2025 19:47

Just that. Why can't we have an option to have the laughing emoji's on if we want and off if we don't?

I've some really funny ( not bitchy, just genuinely funny ) comments lately. I miss being able to laugh react to ones that amused me

OP posts:
Pinkfluffypencilcase · 04/12/2025 22:33

I didn’t start a thread but commented on one and received the laughing / mocking emoji.
So I don’t think that being able to turn off / on would work. Unless you mean each individual post would have that ability?

CandyCayne · 04/12/2025 22:34

Wellstonethecrows · 04/12/2025 22:32

Well actually I have absolutely no understanding of how that would work.

I don't think it's for your or I to understand the technical side of it.

But I do think it may be possible for the tech team to do it.

Hopefully anyway.

Modern MN at its finest, a tiny vocal minority with manufactured grievances shouting loud enough to get the laugh emoji removed from everyone instead of just using a report button.

I genuinely miss it. Telling someone in a comment that I found their comment funny just takes up room on the thread, it would be simpler to just laugh react to it

Manufactured grievance? How?

Novostella · 04/12/2025 22:35

I found it odd that MN removed it in the first place because it offended some posters. Honestly, if an emoji affects some people so much they really should step back from the internet. It makes me wonder how people navigate normal daily life tbh.

Some of the replies I see on here to posts are much worse than a laughing emoji.

Edited to add if some people found a little laughing emoji bullying they need to give their head a wobble. I see so much written on threads that could be classed as bullying yet the posts remain. The pile ons on some threads is horrible yet a little laughing emoji was removed… go figure that one out.

Yes individual posts and potentially threads if that's what the OP wanted.... anyone who was going to comment would be able to see that that particular thread had laughing emojis enabled

So, if I didn't want my posts to be "laughed at" I could just click a button to turn it off, when someone clicked to react the laughing emoji wouldn't show up

If I posted elsewhere and enabled the laughing emoji it would then show up

Petpeeveoftheday · 04/12/2025 22:33

Exactly, rats why I suggest letting people choose if they want the emoji on their thread or on their posts. So, no one could laugh react to your thread or post unless you allowed it by ticking a button before posting

I agree and in glad they've cracked down on negative comments, I report a lot 😅 but I also like laugh reacting to genuinely funny comments

It's not really up to the OP who posts on threads though? There isn't that sort of 'ownership' of thread content just because someone is the OP.

It seems like you're saying certain threads would be set up to discourage people posting about sensitive situations if they don't fancy dealing with anonymous hidden mocking?

I guess this would make more sense on a specific sub-board rather than random threads.

Wellstonethecrows · 04/12/2025 22:39

EchoedSilence · 04/12/2025 21:44

People whined enough so MN would take it away. So it's our turn to whine about wanting it back.

It was removed because it was causing genuine distress and upset to a lot of posters who were bullied by others using it totally inappropriately.

Do you generally class people who are being bullied and who call it out as "whiners"?
Is your attitude to bullying irl just to make the victims of bullying the problem rather than the bullies?

I'm glad btw that you at least admit that you are a whiner.

Petpeeveoftheday · 04/12/2025 22:40

BIWI · 04/12/2025 21:11

But how would it work if you had it turned on? That would mean you’d be free to belittle and humiliate other posters?

Definitely not.

No, it would mean that you would be in control of if you wanted the laughing emoji to be a reaction to your posts. So if you didn't ever want anyone to put a laughing reaction to your post you'd turn it off and no one would be able to put a laughing emoji to it

But the next poster, if they wanted it on it would mean that anyone could put a laughing reaction to their post. But they'd be aware of that before posting so have a choice

Ok yes that makes sense.

I object though to “laughing at” as the intent was clear. I’m not particularly sensitive but it felt unpleasant to be on the receiving end.

See, I have the opposite view! That everyone getting upset because out of the myriad ways to express that you found a post funny, they can't have a little smiley picture in the specific way they want (can still "heart" it, post any emoji you like, any gif, any picture, use words)... is just bizarre!

Literally no-one was asking for a laugh reaction beforehand and now you'd think MN had removed a human right or something.

Namechangetime99 · 04/12/2025 22:43

CandyCayne · 04/12/2025 20:23

Just make the emojis public is what I say.

That way if anyone is going to use them in a nasty manner, we can all see them.

Edited

I like this.

It was annoying when some dick would add a laugh emoji to the most serious of comments/ threads. I saw this alot and although I'm a huge free speech/free debate person, using this when you have a really vulnerable poster desperate for support is low level twat behavior. Therefore, yes to the opportunity to see who has emoji'd!

AromanticSpices · 04/12/2025 22:45

Petpeeveoftheday · 04/12/2025 22:27

🤷‍♀️ I know they removed it as some people were being unkind with it...... hence why I said putting it as an option to have it on or off 😅

I can't actually see a reason for your post tbh, just cones across as bitchy.

But in your OP you said an option for the thread-starter. No-one else posting in the thread would have the option.

It's ok if you don't understand! It's why I suggested you read about it rather than asking people to comment.

Wellstonethecrows · 04/12/2025 22:45

Petpeeveoftheday · 04/12/2025 22:30

I think they should bring it back

Unfortunetly I am one of those who occasionally quotes the OP's original post, only when the thread has ended up with hundreds of comments and I'm late to it though

So in effect you don't give a damn about other people so long as you get what you want?

We can agree to disagree. I still think it’s ridiculous it was removed because some people thought it was bullying. It’s a little smiley face for goodness sake, as I said some people should avoid the internet if their offended by a laughing face.

That's not what I'm saying at all 😅

Where on AIBU it has an option to put a poll or not. There could also be an option to choose to have the laughing emoji as a reaction to that thread or not,
same with posts.

And no, not to discourage anyone 🤦‍♀️ If anybody doesn't want the laughing emoji to be put on their posts then they can turn it off

I honestly have no idea where you got ownership of thread from and discouraging people posting about sensitive situations. I'm not going to reply to you again if you continue to make things up

Then @Novostella you seriously need to have a look at yourself. It wasn’t just about offending people. Some posters had the laughing reaction posted when they had been talking about serious illnesses and death, or miscarriages. Do we really want to be a place where posters are allowed to mock such situations?

It’s not at all about navigating normal life.

HopSpringsEternal · 04/12/2025 22:49

The problem is, is like happened to me posting on someone else's thread. I talk about the rape and murder of my close family member and 3 people laughed at my post. I have never forgotten the hurt of feeling that.

Agree. With public posts / pile ons, there is usually a point where people with sense and inclination to support a vulnerable poster join in and challenge inappropriate nasty behavior they see in the thread.

We can't see when tits are sending people laughing Emojis when those recipients are desperately vulnerable and writing a serious comment for example. Often there are no lol's here.

I love the idea of being able to see who and what has been applied emoji wise. Then we can spot the bell ends and I personally like to support vulnerable posters when I spot them. I also like to laugh at well deserved comical posts. If they're so funny though I usually quote and post a laugh emoji.

In some posts (and your OP) you're talking about the option to switch it on being applied to an entire thread - which means every individual poster on that thread would have to adhere to the OP's choice of having it on or off.

In later posts you talk about the option being applied to each post by each individual poster. I'm slightly lost as to which it is you mean, but if it's the first one then only people who want their posts laughed at would post on that thread.

Absotutly we should just be allowed it anyway
I'm surprised the mail hasnt picked up that grown women have been banned from using the laughing emoji because some people uses it in a naughty way !!

And yet you can start a thread about a lack of apples in a supermarket and the vipers take over and suddenly turn that into some form of attack !
And that's allowed...because ...

BIWI · 04/12/2025 22:55

Are you seriously trying to minimise other posters’ experiences? ‘in a naughty way’ does not cover posters mocking those who have suffered bereavement or rape or murder? You need to seriously have a long, hard look at yourself, if so Hmm
