Wife lost engagement ring

Hubby2 · 03/12/2025 15:31

She was washing her hair she told me and it came off her finger, dropped down the plug hole and obviously I told her not to worry because these things happen.

She knew ring was loose before however had a few close calls losing it. She insisted on buying a replacement as close to the original. I said she really didn't need to.

What would you do? Or has it happened to you

What do you mean what would we do? She's already said she will replace it.

GoldenRosebee · 03/12/2025 15:33

I would let her buy new one. Are you paying for the new one? If yes, then suggest to share the cost, but understandable if you don't want to pay for another ring.

Derbee · 03/12/2025 15:34

Well most likely the ring would be in the trap, so I would have not run any water through the system, and probably retrieved it?

NoKnit · 03/12/2025 15:34

Check it isn't stuck in the U Bend before anything else

mumofoneAloneandwell · 03/12/2025 15:34

I would buy her another one

It was an accident. Dont make her spend her money xx

Edit also check the u bend, as above, before heading to the shops

DeQuin · 03/12/2025 15:35

Is it insured? I lost the diamonds out of mine but at the time it was insured so got it replaced. I later lost my wedding ring and bought myself a much cheaper replacement. At the end of the day it’s just a ring.

LadyHexham · 03/12/2025 15:36

Can you do flush it out into a sieve?

MoFadaCromulent · 03/12/2025 15:36

I'd have my guard up a bit. Good chance she took it off for less innocent reasons.

BillieWiper · 03/12/2025 15:36

It may be stuck in the pipes. So check that first.

Then if not just let her do what she wants about it. Unless you've got plenty of spare cash you shouldn't be made to replace it.

Can it be claimed on home insurance?

SalmonOnFinnCrisp · 03/12/2025 15:37

I'd claim it on insurance and replace it?

IcyPuddles · 03/12/2025 15:37

I’d check the drain, and assuming it isn’t retrievable, I’d buy a new one. Also check your insurance, just in case.

randomchap · 03/12/2025 15:39

Shit happens, unless you think she lost it elsewhere and is lying to you

Fucksake.

Allmarbleslost · 03/12/2025 15:42

What do you mean by what would you do? I'd claim on insurance and replace it. What do you think should happen?

Oh my goodness you sound like my first H!
I lost my engagement ring. And I got accusations about me taking it off so I could get up to no good. He was always bringing this up.
Then after we had split up he actually admitted to me that he had taken the ring and pawned it.

CatsorDogsrule · 03/12/2025 15:45

This is so odd. Check the trap before you do anything else.

Seriously??!! How can you jump to such a conclusion?
She already mentioned several times that it was loose.
OP, I'd expect my fiancee/husband to buy me a replacement if that happened to me. Don't let her spend her own money on an engagement ring.
Check the pipes first.

nomas · 03/12/2025 15:47

Dont buy her another, let her replace it.

She’s definitely having an affair, is seeking to have an affair, or has taken it to cash converters / cash for gold. OP should end it immediately.

understandyourdilemma · 03/12/2025 15:48

I lost my (beautiful and expensive) wedding ring - took it off to dry my hands and I think it went in the dustbin. I bought a cheap one just to have something but I felt guilty about my carelessness, and dh and I felt sad that it was gone.

Then dh lost his (in a much more exciting story, but far too outing to share).

Instead of getting replicas we went to a jewellery workshop and made new wedding rings for each other. They are simple, a little rough, but almost more important than the originals. No diamonds, nothing flash, but they are our eternity rings. Fingers crossed we manage to keep them.

I’d take the side off the bath and unscrew the p trap, and get the ring back out.

It’s very unlikely it’s been washed right down the sewer. Why not at least attempt to retrieve it?

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 03/12/2025 15:49

I'm a bit surprised it would fit down a plug hole, but I would certainly inspect the trap.

yeah if this had been a "my husband claims he lost his wedding ring in shower" thread everyone would have been suggesting he took it off when with someone else.

InSpainTheRain · 03/12/2025 15:56

What would I do? I'd be taking the trap out the drain and seeing if it's in there! I don't really understand your question though as she has already said she will replace it with one that's very close. Accidents happen.
