Wife lost engagement ring

Hubby2 · 03/12/2025 15:31

She was washing her hair she told me and it came off her finger, dropped down the plug hole and obviously I told her not to worry because these things happen.

She knew ring was loose before however had a few close calls losing it. She insisted on buying a replacement as close to the original. I said she really didn't need to.

What would you do? Or has it happened to you

I'd have my guard up a bit. Good chance she took it off for less innocent reasons.

This!

How big are your plug-hole holes FFS?! Mine are all a standard size, the same size I've seen in every single other sink/bath in every other house I've been in in this country. No way would a ring fit down there. Unless you're married to a dwarf perhaps and she was in the habit of wearing a wedding ring on her littlest finger.

Something like a wedding ring that's both valuable and sentimental I'd have stopped washing my hair and rinsed it as best I could in the sink, dried it enough to get to work removing the bath panel and unscrewing the U-bend that I assume is under the bath (never looked under there, never unscrewed a U-bend, but you bet your life I'd being learning so I could get my ring back!).

So unless she's 90 and has no concept of YouTube tutorials, or is very dim so hasn't considered the existence of the U-bend and barely into her 20s with no life experience and scared to touch a spanner, then if you don't suspect an affair, my guess is she's short of cash for Christmas and has pawned or sold it. The "replacement" one is either redeeming the original from the pawnbroker or buying a cheaper copy eg gold plated instead of solid or cubic zirconia instead of diamonds, so she can pocket the difference in value.

FYI a jeweller can resize a ring, especially a plain wedding band, very easily for a small fee.

Have you considered taking up creative writing?

Shinyandnew1 · 04/12/2025 16:05

What would you do?

  1. Speak to a plumber and see if it's still there.
  2. Claim on the insurance.
InterestedDad37 · 04/12/2025 16:07

How does a ring drop down a standard plughole? 💍👇🤔
Get your rubber ducks in a row 😉

Mine are not resizeable due to the way the stones are set in both the engagement and wedding band.

If they were loose already I wouldn’t wear mine in the shower when washing hair or anytime during an activity where there is an increased risk of them sliding off. Mine are now in the safe as they aren’t replaceable in terms of sentiment.

Some good suggestions of what to do but depending on circumstances can she just wear the band after ensuring it’s the correct size. Engagement rings can be so faffy especially when cooking / cleaning (depending on size / style).

Hope you find it though!

Itiswhysofew · 04/12/2025 16:13

I'd check the u bend first. If not there, I'd buy her a new one.

Are you doubting her explanation?

Luckyingame · 04/12/2025 16:18

Hm.
I was actually thinking whether it was sold/pawned, but never about infidelity. 🤐

outerspacepotato · 04/12/2025 16:20

Why didn't one of you check the P trap?

FuzzyWolf · 04/12/2025 16:21

Surely a ring can’t go down a plug hole?

Assuming it can’t be retrieved from the pipe works, I’d claim on the insurance and get a new ring.

Your plug hole....it will be in the trap undo.

BrownTroutBluesAgain · 04/12/2025 16:31

Some modern plug holes don’t have grids.

So yes they can fall down but should be in the ubend assuming the water was turned off immedialtely

Some pics of plug holes 😂😂

JoshLymanSwagger · 04/12/2025 16:32

An earring would fit down a plughole.
An engagement ring wouldn't.

She's either lost it somewhere else or done something else - maybe sold it.

You could undo the trap/u bend to check it's not lodged somewhere in the pipe to humour her.

If you don't find it which I doubt you will and it's insured on your house insurance, you could claim for a replacement - I'd suggest in a smaller size.

If it's not insured then she can replace it.

BrownTroutBluesAgain · 04/12/2025 16:34

Ps
The diamond fell out of my engagement ring after 27years
We’d picked the diamond together in Covent Garden and I designed the ring.
Extremely upset but dh is getting a new one fitted for me for Christmas
💎 😁

Yes that’s what all mine are like aside from the kitchen.

But surely they still have a standard u bend in the pipework?

I'd have my guard up a bit. Good chance she took it off for less innocent reasons.

No, there isn't a good chance she did this. What is wrong with you?

Bookpage · 04/12/2025 17:01

I'd probably claim on the insurance and put the cash into the family pot, rather than buy a new one.

But yes, has anyone checked the trap?

WonderingWanda · 04/12/2025 17:23

Yes the same has happened to me. Dh has lost 2 wedding rings, he claims I must've hoovered them up. We bought new ones.

I lost the diamond from my engagement ring. I looked for it then called the insurance and it was covered so they replaced the diamond.

You could check the sink trap and if it's not there tell your wife to ring the insurance company....and tell her I recommended she leaves you for being so ridiculous for asking such a ridiculous and paranoid question.

Is there a drip feed coming like you suspect she's having it off with her boss and didn't come home one night last week then suddenly the ring was missing. Or does she have a gambling addiction and you suspect she's pawned it? Or maybe some designer shoes turned up immediately after the rings disappearance? Or are you one of those anxious attatchment sorts who thinks that her carelessness with the ring means she doesn't love you? Or a control freak who can't believe she didn't listen when you told her it was loose and now you want to punish her?

Ariela · 04/12/2025 18:03

What I would do, is put a bucket under the Ubend below the taps, and dismantle. Should find the ring there hopefully.

Pumpkinsonastring · 05/12/2025 01:36

I wasn't really being sarcastic.

OP's DW lost her ring in an accidental way and is replacing it with her own money.

But you have gone to great lengths to criticise her, insult her and imply she is totally dishonest. And I don't really understand the narrative you have created.

HeyThereDelila · 05/12/2025 03:51

Check the pipe.

Ours would go down the plug hole as our plugs don’t seem to have that grid over them- not all plugs do.

I lost mine for 6 weeks once in our kitchen; I was so upset. I’d taken it off to bake, and it had got caught in the hinge of a jar. Luckily DH found it and now I never take it off - losing it does happen!
