Reactive HIV and HEPITAS B TEST

my partner of 12 years and I recently got tested for HIV and hepatitis b and c. I've had negative results but my partners results have come back as reactive. We did home tests. My thoughts are now spiralling and im sick with worry that he's got HIV, hepatitis or both. The nurse has said that 9 times out of 10 when a person gets tested again, the results are negative. Has anyone experienced this situation?

Anyone?

I have no idea op, I'm sorry.
Only thing I am thinking is, if you are neg and have been having unprotected sex, it's likely to be an inaccurate result. But really that means nothing as you could have just been lucky.

OverlyFragrant · 14/11/2025 19:47

This was me.
I tested reactive, and what followed was a few weeks of torture as I waited on test results.
Ultimately, I don't have HIV but I do have some autoimmune conditions that mean I test reactive for certain proteins that the HIV tests pick up.

It’s really hard not to freak out in this situation, but all you can do is wait for the next test results. The nurse is probably better placed than anyone on here to tell you what the situation is, and it sounds like she thinks you probably don’t have anything to worry about. It’s also worth mentioning that both diseases are a lot more controllable these days then they used to be. I know someone who was dangerously ill with hepatitis for years having contracted it through a blood transfusion before they started screening, who is now completely clear of it. Right now I think the best thing you can do is try not to think about it and get through however long you have to wait for the new test results.

False positives are extremely common with these test

showershotof · 14/11/2025 19:58

Why are you testing

Weird they are doing it 12 years into a relationship

We didnt test because we suspected that we had something, it was more the fact that my partner had never had a sexual health check and so I thought that it would be a good idea to get checked, just in case. I never for one second thought that his would come back reactive.

Try not to worry. He needs to get a lab test so he knows for sure. That he could be positive for both whilst you remain negative for both, whilst in a 12 year relationship, might mean it’s an operator error.

Even if a confirmatory test is positive, there is a lot that can be done WRT treatments these days.

These tests aren't accurate so I wouldn't use them.

There are places you can get same day HIV tests. What area are you in?

I personally think if neither have cheated and you the female have had babies, it will be fine.

These tests aren't accurate enough and too serious.

showershotof · 14/11/2025 20:19

So few people have HIV unless they've actually done risky stuff. Also in 12 plus year I would have expected him to get ill.

Yes i agree, it does seem weird, but thats none of your business really is it?

False positives are quite common. The test is low specifity - so it produces quite a few false positives in a healthy population.

Well if i had cheated then I would've done the test without his knowledge... I cant say hand on heart that he hasnt cheated though, it is a possibility if it comes back positive.

He had a blood test at the sexual health clinic today, results should be back by Monday or Tuesday.

Just seems odd to do it randomly after all those years together?

It's the Internet

hazelnutvanillalatte · 14/11/2025 20:55

He randomly suggested you get tested and then happened to have a reactive test..?

Is there any reason you're so concerned with what 2 strangers decide to do in their personal life? That's quite odd if you ask me 🤔
