Hate showering & washing my hair-Do you shower every day?

Don’t know why I hate i?! Does anyone else?

I shower on working days (3 x per week) and if meeting up with friends etc, but if i’m off for a while, I don’t, is that gross? I could easily go a week if only doing school drop off and food shop, dog walks

My bingo card is out again 🙄

Is it really too much to expect posters to remember that not everyone is able to shower every day? Claiming that everyone who doesn't shower every day 'smells' is awful.

What I want to know is how these people who claim that those who don't shower every day "smell" know just exactly when someone last had a shower/bath.

GentleSheep · 13/11/2025 20:33

I miss having a shower, only have a bath here, which I use twice weekly (washing my hair each time). Am house-bound so no need to bathe daily. If I feel sweaty in between baths I'll just do a wash at the hand basin.

@SoftBalletShoes , If they are biodegradeable and flushable, like mine, they break apart on flushing and then they biodegrade. It probably helps that they are quite small, much smaller than baby wipes.

Flusshable means that it will go away when you flush. It does not mean you should flush it.
Biodegradable means it will break down by organisms.

From Thames Water site:

1. Only flush the three Ps

That’s pee, poo and (toilet) paper. Anything else can block your pipes. Wet wipes, period products, nappies, cotton wool, dental floss, condoms and hair all belong in the bin.

I understand the difference, and my wipes are both flushable and biodegradable.

ETA: I'm not living at home in the UK and haven't in some time. Perhaps biodegradable wipes aren't available in the UK.

I shower every morning, and again later in the day if I need it. I hate the feeling of not being fresh. I wash my hair every other day.

GeorgeClooneyshouldhavemarriedme · 13/11/2025 20:33

I cannot fathom the " strip wash"
Once you've stripped what's stopping you jumping into the shower?
You can literally shower in 90 seconds.
They manage it in prison.

SJI77 · 13/11/2025 20:37

Snap, I'm ADHD too. I find it almost impossible to shower everyday. Maybe 2-3 times a week. With daily sink washes. The thing is once I'm in the shower I enjoy it. It's the effort it takes to get myself in there, while fighting with my brain.

Also, it's the transitions - getting in (I don't want to) then getting out (I dont want to). ADHD has a huge impact on self-care. I suppose it's hard to understand if your NT. NT do it automatically.

Glitchymn1 · 13/11/2025 20:38

I shower twice a day, wash and blow dry hair once, in summer if sweaty I’ll wash hair again too for bed, but not blow dry. Love feeling clean, always have.

I agree, standing naked and cold outside the shower and washing that way sounds so much worse to me than getting in the warm shower!

SoldOutAgain · 13/11/2025 20:39

I shower daily, but I do think most of us just stick to a habit. If you are used to showering every morning then of course on the day you don’t, you will feel that something is missing and not right. Same if you shower every other day or once a week. I bet we could all get used to a different kind of routine eventually, however difficult it might be at the start.

I have no idea how often my friends and family shower. Ignorance is bliss, I think!

throwaway20262025 · 13/11/2025 20:40

I’m the same OP, I always shower if I’m leaving the house for a particular reason, but I if I’m WFH and not going anywhere besides maybe for a walk around the park at lunchtime I don’t bother. I don’t think I particularly smell till I’ve skipped 2 in a row but even if I do, I’m the only one it impacts.

The irony is once I’m in the shower I love it! It’s just all the steps you have to take to get in there, it’s overwhelming if I don’t HAVE to do it. I have ADHD, if that’s relevant.

Yes I am ND and the transitions are def a thing for me too.

So the grime sits at bay until 23 hrs after the last shower and then launches itself at you?

Did I claim that? No!

Grime accumulates when you get sweaty or dirty and not, to my mind, the very second you've walked out of the shower. Living isn't inherently filthy during every second. Sure, by the time you've walked the dog and been the loo you might be a bit grubby, but we shouldn't all be cowering behind a shower screen terrified of the grime about to attack us.

I was just laughing at the hyperbole.

SoldOutAgain · 13/11/2025 20:44

I have to say that whilst I can imagine using a soapy flannel, I would not feel at all clean after using a wipe. I would feel like I was just adding more ‘chemicals’ to my skin and not rinsing them off after.

How about not actually having a shower?
Is that a good enough reason to not have one!?🙄

CinnamonJellyBeans · 13/11/2025 20:45

I am not too lazy to wash every day

Even if I didn't want to wash, why should other people have to smell my unwashed body or greasy hair.

Just clean yourself. It's not difficult.

SlightlyTerrifiedButPolite · 13/11/2025 20:46

I hate showers too but in particular I HATE washing my hair. It’s such an intense ballache and my arms get tired trying to style it after. Do you have a bath? I can have a bath everyday but showering I find awkward and tiring standing up too. I’m 35 for the record 🤣 and I’ve always felt like this

WorriedMillie · 13/11/2025 20:47

FartyAnimal · 12/11/2025 16:05

I have a very quick (2min) shower every day, I but hair washing is a ballsache and I do it every
5 days or so.

This, but my hair needs washing every 3-4 days. I hate showering, but have perfected the 1.5 min shower! I have a longer shower in hair wash days!

I'm with you but I'm sure you've had a lot of disgusted replies from the Mumsnet clean massive.

Since I started perimenopause my sensory issues have spiralled. I've always hated having wet hair but now it makes me rage!

The reason I don't want to shower is pure demand avoidance.

I do shower when I'm going out or to work but if I'm staying in i don't and I wash my hair way less than the average person. Luckily peri has made it drier so don't get greasy! Usually once a week.

Edited

Maybe they are but the advice is to flush only pee, poo and paper.
Cotton buds are biodegradable and probably would flush, but they don't break down quickly enough. They become part of fatbergs.

I compost as much as possible, but many biodegradable items do not break down in the compost bin.

This is a UK-based site, and the advice here is only flush the 3Ps.

PlantBased11 · 13/11/2025 20:49

I hate showering and washing my hair too. Do it as infrequently as possible.
No I pretty much don't exercise other than walking. I'm naturally thin and naturally lazy and skanky lolll
Also no I don't have mental health issues. I'm just lazy and can't be arsed.
I'm also not ND. I can't emphasise enough that I'm just lazy.

Fancyteacup · 13/11/2025 20:52

I shower twice a day, hair wash every other day

Snugglemonkey · 13/11/2025 20:54

I do my hair twice a week. Long, curly hair is too much to do more. I shower most days, have the occasional pyjama day, but even then, I have a sink wash and change the pyjamas before bed at minimum, usually just a quick shower.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 13/11/2025 20:55

This debate has been had a lot on MN.

There are those who thinks it’s “absolutely disgusting” not to be showering every day, even twice a day.

However, this even being an option for most people is a relatively new things. In the real world, it’s fine just to have a stand up wash on those days you don’t shower.

Hair shouldn’t be washed every day, it’s bad for it. 2-3 times a week max for washing hair.

PersephoneParlormaid · 13/11/2025 20:55

I shower twice a day

bloodredfeaturewall · 13/11/2025 20:55

shower most days as I exercise most days.
though most days I only rinse sweat out of my hair, proper shampoo/conditioner 2 or 3 times a week or it would look a static mess.
it's a chore for sure. but needs must. and I feel better afterwards.
