Hate showering & washing my hair-Do you shower every day?

Don’t know why I hate i?! Does anyone else?

I shower on working days (3 x per week) and if meeting up with friends etc, but if i’m off for a while, I don’t, is that gross? I could easily go a week if only doing school drop off and food shop, dog walks

I shower every morning and don't feel clean without it. But I am hairy etc and I know that my pits, bits and under my boobs already smell a bit musty at the end of a normal day, I couldn't go two days without it being noticeable. My Mum on the other hand is neither hairy or sweaty and showers once or twice a week with no obvious effects.

Curryingfavour · 13/11/2025 18:43

I usually shower every day but only wash hair every 3rd day as it’s wavy / curly and doesn’t look greasy.
eg I washed and styled it today ,it’ll look good on Friday Then dry shampoo Saturday and wash again on Sunday

I bathe everyday but I hate washing my hair so only do it once a week in the shower. I think it’s a sensory issue.

Agree

I wash my hair once a week because I hate drying it

Lastfroginthebox · 13/11/2025 18:44

It's fine. There's no need to shower every day and it can be damaging to your skin. Wash the 'important' bits every day, but most of your skin can take care of itself just fine. By the way - be prepared for the comments from some who will be horrified!

FeetLikeFlippers · 13/11/2025 18:46

I guess it depends on your lifestyle and where you’ve been all day. I don’t enjoy it either but I make myself bathe every evening or I feel sticky and uncomfortable the next day. Also I live in London so I’m grossed out by the idea of going to bed with the day’s pollution etc all over me. I couldn’t wash my hair every day though, that’s way too much of a chore!

Teenagehorrorbag · 13/11/2025 18:50

I used to shower every day when working and never had an issue. Now I'm retired ( and post menopausal) I have come to really hate spending the time! I don't smell like i did pre menopause so have got lazy and only shower every 2/3 days in cool weather!

It is the hair washing that's the worst, but my hair is lank and flat and really the main reason to shower....

My DD is 17 and also hates it, showering every other day at best, unless its hot weather or exercise. She never smells and puts her dislike down to her ADHD (I also have traits).

We are all different. Ask some other people if you smell. If not then you do you!

Well OP I hope you are feeling suitably chastised!

I love a shower, my DH hates it. He doesn't stink, and would always shower before DTD 🌞

I grew up in the 1960s when we didn't even have a shower. It astonishes me how things have changed.

freakingscared · 13/11/2025 18:51

Sorry it those are not normal personal cleaning standards. Washing 3 days a week is not enough for any adult .

Onthepage · 13/11/2025 18:55

Hell no! I am exactly the same, all you ladies out there as a skin therapist, I can tell you showering every day is not good for your skin. You are washing away essential microbes and natural oils which keep your skin healthy and supple. Do whatever you feel comfortable with but…
In the meantime dontfeelchrismassyyet keep doing what you’re doing and don’t apologise. X

Changedforadvice · 13/11/2025 18:56

I don't since having my DS, now 4. I just don't find the time to shower everyday now. I love a shower though and in the past would shower everyday at least, and often twice a day, for the relaxation of it. Never liked a bath, low BP makes it uncomfortable

In winter, especially, it just isn’t necessary to wash so often and it's positively bad for your hair to wash it every day. Plus that level of water usage is probably unsustainable and we should be getting ourselves used to that.

PeachyPeachTrees · 13/11/2025 18:56

I don't hate having a shower as such and like it when its done, but I find it hard to get it done because it's so boring. Same with brushing my teeth and other daily tasks. But I wash my hands a lot.

localnotail · 13/11/2025 18:56

Just offer word of support @Dontfeelchristmassyyet - I'm exactly the same. I hate getting in the shower and getting wet but obviously wash if I go to work etc as I dont want to smell. But if i'm at home all day/ wfh I dont wash. No idea if I smell or not - I also have a weird thing where I never put on anything twice, even if I worn it for 1/2 day/ few hours - once i take something off, I can never put it back on again... so I guess it compensates for me being unwashed ))

Really easy solution. 1) hot bath with plenty of water to top it up as it cools down; 2) excellent book; 3) VERY large glass of wine plus bottle to top it up if necessary. You still have to put the book down to wash your hair, otherwise the pages get soggy (😀), but that's just a few minutes at the end. Showers suck.

You're not alone. I hate showering especially and would happily never do it again if science could figure out a way to get clean without it. As I've got older, I have started to wonder if I am ND (I'm of an age where such things weren't considered) and I wonder if this is one of them.

I could have written this.
I hate being hot then cold and wet and all the faff.
I used to just dive uner a duvet when i was younger and stay there until i was dry, i never realised i was overwhelmed until thinking about it now.
And ive always had long hair, so drying that too is just exhausing.
I shower at night and go to bed with wet hair when ive got a morning appointment and i absolutely have to or work in the morning.
I was always shamed that i was lazy.

TheDenimPoet · 13/11/2025 19:03

I find it an absolute chore to shower and wash my hair. My hair doesn't get greasy until about day 4 after a wash. I don't sweat very much, and use deo anyway. I've even asked my partner if I smell and he's said no. My hygiene is fine. I brush my teeth every day, use deo, and definitely don't smell. I shower and wash my hair twice a week - though if I do heavy exercise like gym or swimming I will shower at the gym after that, too. But twice a week at home.

Remember when people used to have one bath a week, on a Sunday, and everyone shared the water? Yeah that wasn't ideal, but washing every single day isn't necessary either. It strips the oils from your skin and hair, not to mention wasting water and power to heat the water.

nomas · 13/11/2025 19:03

I think water pressure matters a lot. I prefer to shower at work because the water pressure is amazing, so the whole process is quicker.

Specialcrumpets · 13/11/2025 19:03

I’ve been off work for a week and haven’t showered. Just today I’m feeling like I probably need one.

Doesn’t bother me. I quite enjoy being a bit dirty. Not outwardly. I don’t smell or anything

hehehesorry · 13/11/2025 19:03

I do once every other day, I wonder if alot of people insisting they must do it every day are over weight? When I get over a size 8 my bits and creases get alot sweatier.

🙄 My dog doesn’t smell and it doesn’t linger in my hair, so over the top

Speaking as a dog lover and former dog owner, yes your dog does smell. They all do, specially older dogs. We just stop smelling it. I washed dog blankets and beds frequently but I’d be fibbing if I said there wasn’t at least a little dog smell.
OP, I don’t really know what the problem is but a quick shower most days is a good idea. Even if you don’t smell.

If you’re a skin therapist, surely you know that this is not true for most people. It’s not showering that’s bad, it’s how you do it. Normal hygiene and daily showering does not harm skin the health of skin. It removes oils and impurities (and odour) and can help support the skin if it is done properly.

For people like me who have normal skin, it is just fine. I moisturise my whole body after a shower, but that’s mostly for the enjoyment of it rather than a skin issue.

Dry or sensitive skin people can still usually shower daily, but use products and water temperatures that suit them.

I wash my hair at least every other day, every day in the summer (I do the curly girl thing and leave it to dry by itself) and have a shower twice a day.

I wait to be told how wasteful I am.

Hair once or twice a week

shower roughly every other day / more if being unusually active ( unless it’s a backpacking trip !) and less if slobbing on the sofa and having a chilled out weekend . Too much irritates my skin

Exactly this for me too. My skin gets dry and irritated if I shower or bath daily so I do it every other day and a sink wash on the days in between. Hair is twice a week because I have lots of very fine hair and if I wash it too often it gets lank and flat and greasy.

Specialcrumpets · 13/11/2025 19:10

bigboykitty · 13/11/2025 19:04

I’m pretty sure my kids or partner would tell me if I did! They don’t hold back on stuff like that.

I’ve never really smelt tbh, not hairy, not smelly. I just smelled my armpit and it’s totally fresh. I asked my teen to too. She had to be ‘encouraged’ but has confirmed I don’t smell at all!

If I smelled I would wash.

I used to be like this in my late teens to early 20s and didnt feel dirty. Start washing daily even twice a day sometimes and i promise you, you will see how gross you are being. Because now if it gets to the end of the day and i havent freshened up, even with a morning shower i feel disgusting sticky and just not my best self.. sometimes when i have severe depression ill go 2 days but the second i get in a shower my depression is immediatley halved. A clean body and home contributes greatly to your mental health and wellbeing.
